41 American Discovery Trail Marathon 09/06/10 Colorado Springs CO 5:47:01 Marathon 85 343/403 138/158 9/14 First double since I got off crutches (3.5 weeks ago) - I'm slowly making a comeback. Thought I was brilliant for finding a day-2-of-double race with a ginormous net elevation loss. Well, uh, turns out that straight-ish downhill line was actually a very bumpy downhill line with lots of little super-steep up/downs, and the altitude made me want to puke for the vast majority of the race. Around mile 18 I met a girl doing her first marathon who actually DID puke. I was about to go "feel better!" and keep running when I remembered that my boyfriend, who has a bigger heart than anyone I've ever met in my life, has been in my situation a few times and always reaches out to help struggling runners. So I stopped and walked the entire rest of the race with her to make sure she made it (she did :) ) Personally I didn't give a crap about my time, I was just glad to get the Colorado monkey off my back after 2 DNS's and a DNF in that darn state. Finally!
40 Tupelo Marathon 09/05/10 Tupelo MS 4:48:48 Marathon 64 178/249 51/98 31/38 Needed to break 5 hours to make my flight, which normally would be a no-brainer but my track record lately hasn't exactly been stellar. So I concentrated hard for the first half and ran EXACTLY 10-minute miles - literally, 131 min for the first 13.1. At that point I knew I'd make it, so I relaxed and took it easy for the second half. This was a surprisingly pretty out-&-back course with nice rolling hills, lots of friendly Maniacs, and a super cool medal. Also, thanks Bethany and Debbie for letting me crash in their hotel the night before!
39 ET Full Moon Midnight Marathon 08/21/10 Rachel NV 5:57:08 Marathon 722 122/175 43/70 8/13 Overall a neat race, although I should have learned by now that I don't particularly like running at night. My body was a mess for a couple days afterwards. Got to run with cool people and see some cool alien costumes. No real aliens, though. Awww. Yet another time I am ashamed of, but at least (for the first time in over 2 months) I wasn't limping badly enough for anyone to ask what's wrong - or even recognize me as "the crutch girl" - so I consider it a small success. Oh and the medal is AWESOME!
38 Humpy's Marathon / Big Wildlife Run 08/15/10 Anchorage AK 5:52:37 Marathon 118 292/320 113/129 8 Finally got off crutches 3 days ago and was overjoyed to be on my feet again... but it was also a big wakeup call. I haven't been allowed to work out in 8 weeks and now I'm kinda out of shape. And by 'kinda' I mean A LOT. I was half-limping, half-running, and kept getting passed by obese people powerwalking the relay. Booo! You better believe I'll be running doubles and sub-4s again but I might have to survive a couple months of rehab first... Nevertheless it was a SUPER fun fantastic weekend, and awesome to see so many Maniac/50stater friends there! And thanks to Gary's aunt & uncle we had a fabulous hotel room and went the whole weekend without sleeping in any cars! It's been a loooong time since we could say that.
37 Carrollton Marathon 07/25/10 Carrollton MI 5:56:04 Marathon 925 111/114 32/34 6/6 My 3rd marathon on crutches (kinda) and hopefully my last!!! Crutched lap 1 of 3 in about 2:39 - on pace for a crutch-PR - but then the RD grabbed me and was like, "You're going too slow, you have to quit now. I'm switching your registration to the one-lap Mini-Marathon." Ummm yeah RIGHT. The hell if I'm ever going to do anything called a MINI marathon. We argued and I started to cry and the RD yelled, "Stop that, your tears won't work on me!" Well I'd had enough of this asshole and no way was I quitting so I hurled my crutches down, ripped off my shirt, and ran the next 18 miles on my broken hip. The course was pretty boring and it was hot and I was hurting since I haven't actually run in 5 weeks... but Gary saved the day again; he found me during my 2nd lap then ran alongside me for my whole 3rd lap while carrying my crutches (which he went back to pick up off the ground) and gatorade and snacks. He also helped the last few runners make it to the finish behind me, and some of the volunteers came over after to tell me they were moved to tears by how nice he was :) And, AND... after the race we went out for pizza with Chuck Engle and his gf Sommer!
36 Big Bear Lake Trail Run 07/17/10 Bruceton Mills WV 13:37:10 32.5 mi 21 26/37 12/14   Not thrilled about losing my ultra virginity on crutches. This race would've been fun if my hip wasn't broken - hills, mud, big rocks - but crutching a trail ultra was NOT the most brilliant idea I've ever had (actually I got fed up and limped some laps sans crutches... shhh don't tell my doctor). It took a ton of willpower to not quit - not only was I in pain, I was bored to death! Who wants to spend 14 hours walking through the woods alone on crutches?! The RD was super supportive and everybody kept cheering me on and eventually I made it through, but I just felt pathetic. (Although I still beat 11 people. Imagine losing to the girl on crutches. Ha!) Can't wait til I can run again.
35 Missoula Marathon 07/11/10 Missoula MT 10:39 Marathon 277 1323/1323   50/50 I FINISHED A MARATHON ON CRUTCHES!!!! So lucky I have the world's greatest boyfriend, incredible Maniac friends, and amazing race staff who helped me make it the whole way. Got a nice long 10-hour look at the pretty mountain scenery while volunteers kept the aid stations open extra long & drove around checking in on me. A race official named Rebecca biked alongside and started chatting with me - I figured the support would end when the course closed but she kept me company all the way to the finish! Meanwhile Gary ran a 2:52(!!!) and waited 8 hours for me; he brought me pizza along the course, walked the last couple miles with me, and spent the rest of the weekend carrying me around while I was in too much pain to move on my own. The biggest surprise, though, came at the very end of the race: David Holmen and his wife had waited at the finish line for 3 hours after the course closed to give me a medal so I could count it for Montana! I am still in total amazement and overwhelmed with gratitude that they were kind enough to do this for me. I must've had 500 people run past and tell me I was an inspiration, but I could never have done it without so many spectacular people supporting me and believing in me. Loved this race!!!
34 Grandma's Marathon 06/19/10 Duluth MN 5:34:39 Marathon 2625 5031/5613 1837/2146 1007/1161 After the triple this was supposed to be an easy weekend. Sub-4, rush to airport, fly to CLE in time for my boyfriend's 100-mile finish... until my hip gave out 2 steps into the race and I was screaming in pain before I even crossed the start line. Sooo grateful to Pat, Carol, & Dave for stopping to give me drugs and hang out with me even though I was limping pathetically and felt like a total failure. Got carried away to medical at the end. Aaaand turns out I broke my hip [insert Grandma joke here - I'm 22, I can take it]. Time to start learning to run on crutches!
33 Swan Lake Marathon 06/13/10 Viborg SD 3:57 Marathon 97 16/87 3 1 Day 3 of the triple, and I pulled a sub-4 and placed 3rd overall! This was after flying in from the Bear Lake double, sleeping in my rental car during an all-night thunderstorm, and getting drenched by freezing rain and mud throughout most of the marathon. Gary won the whole race - this was the 2nd podium finish of the weekend for us both!!!!!!!
32 Bear Lake Utah Marathon 06/12/10 Garden City UT 4:26 Marathon 67 27/109 6/47 3 GOT MY 10TH STAR!!! The weather sucked, and the course wasn't as scenic as yesterday's, but there were more people to talk to which made it fun anyway. Didn't run a smart race - 9s the first half and 11s the second (my body turned into an ice cube halfway through) - but still managed 3rd in my age group. Special thanks to Kevin for letting us stay with him both nights!
31 Bear Lake Idaho Marathon 06/11/10 Fish Haven ID 4:15 Marathon 1967 11/73 3 1 Yay, my first real podium finish!!!!! A little cold and lonely for my taste, but a pretty course with a great director and lots of friendly 50-staters. Taking 3rd overall was a piece of cake. I mean what would YOU do if you were totally falling for this amazing guy, you hadn't seen him in like 5 days, and you know he'll be waiting for you to jump into his arms at the finish line? Um, you run really fast, duh!!!
30 Casper Marathon 06/06/10 Casper WY 3:55:47 Marathon 27 35/153 5/47 1 First sub-4 since my injury 7 months ago! I don't usually let myself run that fast, but decided to break 4 this time just to show Gary I could do it. Great scenery, perfect weather, fantastic food, way better than I expected for Wyoming. Was 3rd until the elevation got to me around mile 20 and I let a couple of girls catch me. Oh well, 5th isn't bad, and I won my age group. Weekend was AMAZING...seems like all my weekends are turning out like that these days :)
29 Vermont City Marathon 05/30/10 Burlington VT 4:23:47 Marathon 2870 1612/2885 563/1193 79/160 2 hour negative split on the double!!! Drove over 8 hours to get here - would've been 7 but I had to waste time flirting my way out of a speeding ticket in upstate NY and taking a stupid ferry to get into VT. Got in after midnight and didn't even bother showering so I ran this one covered in mud and blood from the day before. Sexy, I know. Twas fun seeing a lot of friends and absolutely delightful running with Tami the whole way, but I kind of hated this race. Too crowded, boring course, too many half marathoners that never went away because the HMs were "2-person relays", no water or ice cream or beer at the finish. Booo! Still I pulled that 2-hr neg split and then chugged random bottles of water I found on the ground, jumped over fences to get out of the finish area, ran to my car, and drove another 9 hours to hurry back to the happiest part of my weekend. Anyway, I put over 1300 miles on the rental car, knocked off 2 more states, and had more fun than I ever imagined possible. Great success!
28 Sehgahunda Trail Marathon 05/29/10 Letchworth State Park NY 6:28:38 Marathon 21 53/78 6/18 2 So glad this was an inaugural race - any reviews might've scared me away! Improvised some last-second travel changes and wound up flying into CLE via MSY (& saw Air Force One!), had a fun evening in Erie PA, and dragged myself out of bed at 3:30AM to drive to the marathon. Fell down literally 1 minute in & got cool battle scars right off the bat, but miraculously managed not to fall after that. Over 100 "stream crossings" where you climb down into a stream, balance on some rocks/mud, and climb back out. Parts were so steep I had to grab onto trees and rocks to pull myself up. Amazing aid stations; I've never been so in love with PBJ sandwiches. Didn't actually find the course particularly scenic, but was mostly looking at the ground trying to avoid death by tree roots so maybe it was pretty and I just didn't notice. Super fun experience for my first real trail marathon. Tons of runners DNF'd so I'm just happy I finished and finally have a PW I can be proud of.
27 Fargo Marathon 05/22/10 Fargo ND 4:24:21 Marathon 377 1110/1878 360/754 38/70 Flew to MSP Friday night and Gary picked me up on his way to Fargo. We got in at 2AM and slept in his car at the Fargodome parking lot - pretty much my usual pre-race routine but Gary made it more fun than usual. Monsoon at the start dried up early on; saw tons of friends on the out-&-backs; ran w/ Laura & Jackie for a few miles each. Crowd support was fabulous. Flew to Chicago after and partied all night, then flew home Sunday morning and slept by my pool all day. Awesome weekend!!
26 Delaware Marathon 05/16/10 Wilmington DE 4:53:18 Marathon 419 427/554 156/211 18/19 Another double = 25 states down!!! Flew OMA-ORD-BWI, got to Delaware at 2:30am & slept in my rental car in a parking lot next to Gary K's car. Yeah I'm classy. Hung out with so many maniacs/50staters it felt like a reunion run. Added a lot to my time by flirting with guys that were running slow (Note to self: flirt with fast boys next time). Drab city but pretty scenery in the park. Never had a clue what mile it was with all the double-loop signage. Crummy Sat/Sun split - can't wait to redeem myself at my next double!
25 Brookings Marathon 05/15/10 Brookings SD 4:22:38 Marathon 31 118/203 33/68 3/6 Beautiful day for a race. Flew to Omaha w/Laura, drove 4 hrs together to Brookings, & shared a room w/Peter. Ran the first half with some guys going for a sub-4 but then backed off to save myself for the next day. Felt like an idiot for my terrible splits. Super enthusiastic spectators and a really friendly group of runners. Flatter than I usually like, but definitely an enjoyable and well-run little race.
24 Lake Geneva Marathon 05/08/10 Lake Geneva WI 4:20:35 Marathon 122 56/112 7/27 2/6 Laura and I stayed with my friend Peter in Milwaukee who was running the 10k. The course wasn't well marked, and it was cold and windy, but Peter came out to run the last few miles with me so I managed to not get lost. Quite hilly but nothing fazes me anymore. Ran my best time of 2010 (twas my 15th marathon of the year) and got 2nd in my age group! After the race Diane & Annette let me shower in their room and then I flew to Portland to surprise my mom for mother's day.
23 Providence Marathon 05/02/10 Providence RI 4:22:53 Marathon 227 541/963 153/360 58/102 Negative split on the double by over an hour :) Flew PHX-BOS and drove to Providence, got to hotel at 1:30am (roomed w/ Eddie H). Prettier course than I was expecting, met a lot of maniacs (Linda & Kevin, great running with you!) Could've broken 4:20 but mother nature's stupid gift came on the plane ride here so I had to deal with hemmorhaging blood during the marathon. Obviously this was my body's big "F you" to me. But still managed the 1-hr negative split I was going for... and completed STATE #22 AT AGE 22!!!
22 Prescott Whiskey Row Marathon 05/01/10 Prescott AZ 5:24:28 Marathon 49 159/190 51/64 2 Took the early start because I was terrified of missing my flight. Advertised "4th hardest in the US" - 26.2 miles of climbing up and down a mountain at 7000 ft. Best views I've ever seen in a marathon. Most people walked the uphills and sprinted the downhills but I just ran the whole thing at a slow, steady pace. Would've gone way faster but I had another the next day & didn't want to trash my quads. Slept in my rental car the night before and woke up at 3am to a cop slapping a parking ticket on my window, jumped out of the backseat and talked my way out of it, yay.
21 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon 04/25/10 Oklahoma City OK 4:22:24 Marathon 896 1038/2597 294/1037 36/97 2nd day of my 2nd double & ran over half the race WITH BART YASSO!!!!!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!! Had a blast talking to him, what an amazing guy. Also ran w/George K & Tami H and roomed w/Bethany B. The entire race was really well organized and I think it was the most I've ever enjoyed a marathon. Soooo many cookies at the end mmmmmmm. Oh and I finished 22 min faster than I did the day before :)
20 Kentucky Derby Marathon 04/24/10 Louisville KY 4:44:33 Marathon 1320   249/524 31/65 Hot/humid/rainy nastiness. Pretty scenery, and Churchill Downs was cool, but a tough course and I just wasn't that into it. I'd gotten in after midnight and had barely slept or eaten the night before. Maniac James N kept me entertained through the 2nd half and a guy from St Louis helped me sprint to the finish after I bonked at 23. 50staters Keith & Greg waited around for me at the finish, and Laura & Mary were super accommodating roomies!
19 Andrew Jackson Marathon 04/17/10 Jackson TN 4:40:43 Marathon 310   9/24 2 Nice rolling hills, small group of runners and fabulous weather. Not a ton of scenery but everyone was SO friendly and fun I loved every minute of it! Ran with maniac Daryl, met Carol "Ponytail" and got to see the great Frank B again. Slept in my rental car the night before and enjoyed a nice shower in the gym at the finish. Placed 2nd in my age group & got a gigantic trophy for it!
18 Go! St. Louis Marathon 04/11/10 St. Louis MO 4:45:37 Marathon 2331 1412/2078 403/710 64/97 First double and a GREAT experience!!! Ran w/Jackie O, George T, and 50-stater Bruce. Got to chat with Larry, Dane, and several other maniacs who had also done the double. Felt fantastic afterwards, and later miraculously made it home on an oversold plane because I knew the pilot. An absolutely perfect weekend :)
17 Olathe Marathon 04/10/10 Olathe KS 4:37:50 Marathon 1062 221/322 53/100 8/9 Beautiful weather! Loved seeing friends throughout the out-and-back part. Drove from airport with Laura S (also finishing all 50 states this year - woohoo!) Ran w/Eric K and helped him hold back the speed in preparation for our double the next day!
16 Easter Marathon 04/03/10 Rochester WA 4:42:40 Marathon 2223 7/9 1/1 1 Double-loop out-&-back with zero crowd support, zero women other than me, and ZERO PORTA-POTTIES!!! Oh and the aid stations gave out fiber bars, hahahahaha. Only 9 total marathoners so it was pretty lonely, and the weather was terrible (freezing rain, yuck) but I survived!
15 Ocean Drive Marathon 03/28/10 Cape May NJ 4:36:24 Marathon 344 398/607 113/203 37/59 Bigger race than I'd expected. Flew in late Sat night & slept in rental car the night before the race. Gorgeous beach views, nice people to run with. Met up with lots and lots of Maniac friends, and finally had the pleasure of meeting Larry!!! Also saw Boonsom & Frank complete their 3rd & 5th rounds of all 50 states, WOW!!!!!!
14 North Carolina Marathon 03/20/10 High Point NC 4:26:09 Marathon 2065 156/301 43/90 3/7 Hilly, but it felt good on my 4th marathon weekend in a row. Split a room with another Maniac, Eric J, and met lots of others at the race. Great volunteers - and jelly beans at all the aid stations! Score!
13 Lower Potomac River Marathon 03/14/10 Piney Point MD 4:29:04 Marathon 151 76/119 20/39 4 New England at its best! Pretty coastal scenery, indoor start/finish, showers, & delicious hot buffet after. Race director is very, very nice (although very strict on no-headphones rule). Rained all weekend but cleared up during the race. I loved talking with the other runners, most of whom were way more experienced than me!
12 Little Rock Marathon 03/07/10 Little Rock AR 4:28:12 Marathon 1824 654/1549 163/576 12/39 Roomed w/Eddie H & Bob K, had great local beer & slept on the floor in a cozy nest of blankets. Hillier than expected, especially at mile 25. Delicious post-race food and friendly people - lots and lots of 50 staters at the reunion. And what a humongous medal!!!
11 Mardi Gras Marathon 02/28/10 New Orleans LA 4:30:01 Marathon 4221 1743/3509 584/1551 50/133 Bought a car and immediately broke it in by driving 750 miles to New Orleans (as my dad said afterwards, "at least now we know it's reliable")! Stayed with Maniac friends Rick & Lauren & partied with them in NOLA after! Very fun place to run, flat course, gorgeous weather.
10 Maui Oceanfront Marathon 01/24/10 Maui HI 4:42:02 Marathon 9 111/189 37/75 18/31 Like 85 degrees the whole time...but duh, it was Maui! Beautiful course along the ocean, and a great excuse for my sister and me to take a weekend jaunt to Maui. Met a lot of the Hawaiian Maniacs, and ran w/ my friend Will who was doing his 1st marathon!
9 Richmond Marathon 11/14/09 Richmond VA 5:21:08 Marathon 1391 3384/3785 1283/1506 109/118 Doctor told me not to run... but I ran anyway with a leg brace (went w/ Maniac friend Peter L, didn't want to ditch him!) Was in a LOTTTTT of pain. Finished, but felt like a pathetic mess and took a bit of time off from running afterwards.
8 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 11/07/09 Indianapolis IN 4:45:04 Marathon 728 1427/1978 440/702 33/52 My first-ever over-4-hr finish. Was injured & in pain going into this one; walked part of it for the first time ever. The weather was good and course was flat, but I was hurting too much to enjoy it. But the best part of the race was meeting Kino -- who told me I should join the Maniacs!!
7 On the Road for Education 10/25/09 Mason City IA 3:56:37 Marathon 63 40/105 6/27 3/6 Almost-freezing temps & muddy, but a cute little town w/cows, farms, and friendly people. Took a nice 6-hour road-trip with friend and fellow maniac Peter L to get to Mason City. We're both in our very early 20s and all the townspeople thought we were married. Hahahaha!
6 Chicago Marathon 10/11/09 Chicago IL 3:52:22 Marathon 26540 8952/33475 2132/14492 259/1735 Lived in Chicago at the time, but ran this right after arriving on a red-eye flight from a wedding (didn't even make it home first...after arriving at ORD I dropped my stuff off at my office and went straight to the start line)! Lots of friends came out to cheer me on; we ran right by my apartment & my office. Super flat & tons of fun, but cold. And I couldn't wait to go home and sleep afterward!
5 Portland Marathon 10/04/09 Portland OR 3:39:34 Marathon 7169 1199/8093 253/4268 22/305 Nothing beats running a marathon in your own hometown!!!!!!!! Stayed with my parents, saw old high school friends, loved every minute of it!!!!!!!!! Highly recommended - will definitely do this one again someday. And I got myself another BQ!!!!!!!!
4 New Mexico Marathon 09/06/09 Albuquerque NM 3:50:56 Marathon 1027 70/378 16/138 1/5 Altitude + 9-mile climb at start was tough, but then a nice long downhill & lots of pretty hot-air balloons! And I got 1st in my age group!!! This was a 50-stater reunion--and it was only my 3rd state but I was so inspired that I made up my mind to one day try for all 50 :)
3 San Francisco Marathon 07/26/09 San Francisco CA 3:43:40 Marathon 3829 791/5036 131/1710 29/218 Hilly! Fun city, great weather & awesome run over golden gate bridge. Met Dane R at the expo, and had a nice night out downtown with college friend Matt who now lives in SF.
2 Boston Marathon 04/20/09 Boston MA 3:45:02 Marathon 14759 11688/22849 3268/9302 2361/5023 My first Boston! Stayed at my old sorority house & saw lots of college friends along the route.
1 Bay State Marathon 10/19/08 Lowell MA 3:36:27 Marathon 1026 450/1195 83/443 29/119 Flat, fast, beautiful fall weather, and ran a BQ - at my very first race ever!
