Avenue of the Giants 05/07/95 Weott CA 2:59:49 Marathon   24/ 499   2/ 69 55°F One of the beautiful courses I've run. It's also almost level considering it is run through huge redwoods.

Bakersfield 02/02/80 Bakersfield CA 2:49:44 Marathon 38 31/ 196   19/ 81 PR. I came under the spell of the Boston Marathon after reading a book about the history of the race. BQ by 16 seconds.
Bakersfield 02/07/81 Bakersfield CA 3:07:23 Marathon   113/ 254     Flat fast course. 49°F. Back pain interrupted training.
Bakersfield 02/05/83 Bakersfield CA 2:42:48 Marathon   7/ 127   6/ 55 PR 42-50°F. Flat fast course.
Bakersfield 02/04/84 Bakersfield CA 2:41:22 Marathon   2/ 78   2/ 33 PR This was probably my best chance to win a marathon. I heard later that the guy who won was visiting from out of state and entered on a whim. 52-62°F
Bakersfield 02/02/85 Bakersfield CA 2:49:33 Marathon   4/ 65   3/ 27 45°F
Bakersfield 02/01/86 Bakersfield CA 2:43:11 Marathon   3/ 43   3/ 18 50-65°F
Big Island 07/05/87 Hilo HI 2:49:16 Marathon         68-78°F
Big Island 03/20/05 Hilo HI 4:06:20 Marathon   43/ 151   5/ 16 63-72°F Different course than earlier Big Island Marathon. Rolling terrain for first few miles and flattens out for last 2/3 of race. Suffered from asthma symptoms.
Big Sur 04/27/86 Big Sur CA 2:50:43 Marathon   13/ 1442   1/ 209 Initial Big Sur Marathon. Frank Shorter ran beside me for about a half mile. He was the celebrity guest of the marathon and he ran the first half as a workout. This is a hilly but beautiful course. The only flat sections are the tops and bottoms of hills.
Big Sur 04/28/91 Big Sur CA 2:53:17 Marathon   29/ 1914   2/ 211 45-65°F
Big Sur 04/26/92 Big Sur CA 2:57:18 Marathon   45/ 1870   3 60-75°F

Blackhorse 10/22/00 Fort Irwin CA 3:46:32 Marathon   13   2 50-67°F This was the only marathon course that had multiple tank crossings on the road. I saw a coyote at an ATM on the base.
Boston 04/21/80 Boston MA 2:59:43 Marathon   1682/ 7500   1407/ 2112 Official time 3:01:04. I'm posting the amount of time it took me to get from the start to the finish. This was the last year Bill Rodgers won and the year Jacqueline Gareau also won but had her glory stolen by Rosie Ruiz.
Boston 04/21/97 Boston MA 3:11:35 Marathon   1617/ 8908   49/ 883 52°F Ran with Maniac #984 until he got tired of my lame jokes. I went on to high(low) five every kid on the course that I could reach.
Burney 09/15/93 Burney CA 3:14:22 Marathon   4/ 50   2 50-70°F Burney Falls is still there but the marathon is gone. Nice scenery. Fire roads, trails, etc.
California International 12/07/86 Sacramento CA 2:42:18 Marathon         One of the best races to run a PR. Slightly rolling early on but level after 16-18 miles. 35-48°F

California International 12/07/08 Sacramento CA 4:13:04 Marathon 4093 3083/ 5198   51/ 100 This year's conditions were excellent. 42° start/44° 6 hours later, overcast, virtually no wind. I was not excellent. My pace doubled a few steps after mile 24 as a hamstring tightened up severely and I walked in from there. My son, Glenn, ran his first marathon to add a sunny spot to the day.
California International 12/07/09 Sacramento CA 4:05:51 Marathon 4758 3192/ 5845   41/ 119 30-45° Lots of small problems but finished feeling good. Last three miles faster than first three. Snow the next day.
California International 12/05/10 Sacramento CA 3:46:44 Marathon 5103 1600/ 5849   14/ 116 48° - 55° Almost perfect conditions. A no excuses kind of day.
California International Marathon 12/04/11 Sacramento CA 4:50:12 Marathon 5184 4326/ 5775   35/ 57 34-48° My LAST marathon. Healthy and enjoyable running to Maniacs everywhere. Had a great time running with my son and annoying the crowd.
Central California 11/10/79 Fresno CA 3:00:59 Marathon   45/ 266   18/ 95 Flat, fast, and cool. (45-55F) First time I "raced" a marathon.

Cowtown Sacramento 10/04/09 Sacramento CA 3:47:05 Marathon 3552 92/ 328   2/ 10 48-62° I started running this race in 1983. These were the best conditions I have encountered here.
Fresno 11/10/84 Fresno CA 2:42:51 Marathon   11/ 143   2/ 35 Fresno Marathon takes over from Central California Marathon. 45-57°F
Fresno 11/09/85 Fresno CA 2:38:03 Marathon 26 12/ 190   3/ 42 All Time PR. The stars were aligned that day. Perfect weather - overcast 45-51°F. At the starting line I heard a group of Buffalo Chips, a Sacramento, California running club, discussing their splits. A group of them were going to start out slightly faster than I was planning. I went with them on the theory that it is easier to hold a pace as a group. The group broke up over time, but it was a great help. Oh, there was a tailwind over the last 10 miles. Bib number was 26.
Fresno 11/08/86 Fresno CA 2:41:30 Marathon   4/ 114   1/ 21 45-55°F
Honolulu 12/13/87 Honolulu CA 2:55:38 Marathon     93/ 6513 13/ 846 Not a PR course, especially for mainlanders. 76°F

Humboldt 10/17/10 Weott CA 3:51:40 Marathon 1139 66/ 206   2/ 8 52-57° Overcast. Excellent conditions.
Humboldt 10/16/11 Weott CA 4:10:53 Marathon 1127 58/ 149   1/ 2 52-60° Good conditions. I had an off day. This is my last competitive marathon.
Kona 03/22/87 Kailua-Kona CA 2:45:35 Marathon   2/ 17   2 Moved to Hawaii. Rolling course. Similar to Ironman Triathlon course. They do it after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112 and in the heat of the day. 68-75°F. They're iron. I'm tinfoil.
Kona 03/27/88 Kailua-Kona HI 2:54:33 Marathon         68-78°F
Lake Tahoe 10/08/00 Lake Tahoe CA 3:47:30 Marathon   63   3 50-65°F
Los Angeles 02/19/84 Los Angeles CA 3:08:43 Marathon   184     This was the shakedown of the Olympic course for 1984. It finished in the L.A. Coliseum where Ms. Benoit had her triumph later that year.
Los Angeles 03/09/86 Los Angeles CA 2:40:04 Marathon         57-67°F I knew I was taking marathoning too seriously when people mentioned the Playboy Bunny aid station after the race. I hadn't seen them.
Mineral King 10/03/82 Kings Canyon Nat'l Park CA 4:11:31 Marathon   2/ 12     Uphill 1400 ft. to 7800 ft. at finish. One time event. Rangers said we should not have been given permission to hold the race after it was over.

Napa 03/04/07 Napa CA 4:03:59 Marathon   554/ 1236   12/ 31 42-59°F Stress fracture of knee diagnosed after race. Note to self: If knee is swollen BEFORE race, don't run race. Maniac #984 accompanied me in my run/walk strategy.
Napa 03/02/08 Napa CA 3:54:58 Marathon   689/ 1781   10/ 38 45-55°F
Napa Marathon 03/07/10 Napa CA 3:53:16 Marathon 1429 541/ 1735   7/ 39 42-56° Fun race. #1 and 2 were there in a gaggle of Maniacs. Ran almost entire race with #984 who was off because of lack of training.
Napa Marathon 03/06/11 Napa CA 3:56:14 Marathon 1612 531/ 1755   7/ 35 50-55° Rain & drizzle about half the race.
Napa Valley 03/11/84 Napa CA 2:46:50 Marathon   43/ 965   20/ 340 Rolling terrain. 50-68°F
Napa Valley 03/03/96 Napa CA 2:56:29 Marathon   36/ 704   1/ 120 48-55°F It's easier to do well in your age group if "everyone else" is resting up for the 100th Boston.
Newport 06/01/02 Newport OR 3:16:15 Marathon   55   2 50-55°F Maniacs love this race with good reason. Fast, mostly level course, generally good marathon weather. Only race I've run with oysters at an aid station.
Newport 06/05/04 Newport OR 3:14:47 Marathon   50/ 540   1/ 28 52-66°F I felt pretty happy with winning my age group until I noticed that Herb Phillips had finished 27 minutes ahead of me in an older age group! Congratulations, Mr. Phillips!
Newport 05/31/08 Newport OR 3:43:17 Marathon   191/ 613   2/ 13 48-55°F
Newport 06/05/10 Newport OR 3:46:13 Marathon 788 153/ 643   1/ 14 50-60° Great weather between two days of rain. Enjoyed meeting more Maniacs.
Newport 06/04/11 Newport OR 3:59:07 Marathon 219 205/ 673   3/ 10 55-75° Warmest day in 13 year race history, but still OK. Good Maniac turnout, as usual.
Nike/OTC 09/09/84 Eugene CA 2:42:46 Marathon   19/ 307   5/ 86 Drove directly to and from the race from Visalia, Calif., 700 miles, 15 hours with a friend who deteriorated into an ultra runner in the coming years. This was the first marathon I ran with 5 year age groups. Honored to finish on Pre's home track. 58-68°F
Pacific Shoreline 01/31/99 Newport Beach CA 3:24:27 Marathon   76/ 529   2/ 42 49°F and rain 75% of the race.
Redding 01/01/02 Redding CA 3:43:16 Marathon   21/ 60   1/ 5 50°F This marathon has had at least 4 separate courses in its short history. 10-15 miles along Sacramento River is especially beautiful. Much of course is along old railroad right-of-way. Big downhill at the start. Not a PR course. The start is on Shasta Dam. Because of the proximity to 9-11, this was the only race I've attended with searches (pretty minimal) in the staging area carried out with National Guard troops armed with M-16's.
Redding 01/01/03 Redding CA 3:35:38 Marathon   12/ 54   2/ 2 35-47°F
Redding 01/01/04 Redding CA 3:46:51 Marathon   12/ 54   2/ 5 40-48°F
Redding 01/01/05 Redding CA 3:42:54 Marathon   18/ 66   2/ 7 35-42°F
Redding 01/14/07 Redding CA 3:51:41 Marathon   28/ 105   2/ 5 22-50°F Coldest starting temperature for me. (I am from California.)
Sacramento 10/02/83 Sacramento CA 2:54:40 Marathon   18/ 271     60-70°F.
Sacramento 10/06/91 Sacramento CA 2:51:48 Marathon   4/ 172   1/ 22 65-73°F
Sacramento 10/04/92 Sacramento CA 2:58:31 Marathon   4   1 65-75°F
Sacramento 10/03/93 Sacramento CA 2:58:34 Marathon   7/ 133   1/ 23 58-70°F
Sacramento 10/01/95 Sacramento CA 2:58:59 Marathon   11/ 257   1/ 38 55-65°F
Sacramento 10/01/00 Sacramento CA 3:30:38 Marathon   13/ 113   2/ 12 60-75°F Plantar fasciitis was still coming and going. I decided to run a marathon a week for the month of October to decide my running fate. I finished the marathons and had my Maniac qualification.
Sacramento 10/07/01 Sacramento CA 3:23:03 Marathon   7   2 55-65°F
Sacramento 10/07/02 Sacramento CA 3:35:35 Marathon   16/ 94   2/ 9 60-75°F
Sacramento 10/03/04 Sacramento CA 3:38:14 Marathon   39/ 257   3/ 18 56-72°F
San Francisco 07/24/83 San Francisco CA 2:44:26 Marathon   212/ 7238     56 - 62°F. I passed a guy on crutches at about six miles. I don't know if he finished. He was setting a sub-7 minute pace!
San Francisco 08/19/84 San Francisco CA 3:14:51 Marathon   1062     60-65°F Hilly course. It is San Francisco. This was the second marathon in 1984 (LA was the 1st) where I paced someone else and used one marathon to train for another. Maniacal behavior two decades before it became official.
San Francisco 07/21/85 San Francisco CA 2:44:36 Marathon   103/ 4309   13/ 771 55-65°F
San Francisco 07/12/98 San Francisco CA 3:53:59 Marathon   902/ 3697   40/ 166 60-70°F Plantar fasciitis greatly hampered my training. Maniac #984 ran with me for 16 miles, went on almost to the finish and then waited outside the stadium (10 minutes?) so that we could finish together.
San Joaquin 04/11/99 Fresno CA 3:13:35 Marathon   45/ 483   5/ 41 45-52°F Flat fast course but race only lasted one year.
Santa Monica 08/26/79 Santa Monica CA 3:21:02 Marathon   187/ 581   74/ 196 Warm day (70-85°F). Some nausea at finish. Finished on Santa Monica City College track running to the applause of the crowd. (They were applauding for a lady finishing behind me.) Lesson: Run marathons for yourself. The general public doesn't really care unless you are at the Olympics or Boston.
Santa Rosa 08/30/09 Santa Rosa CA 3:57:06 Marathon 318 37/ 86   1/ 5 My first race in Maniac yellow. I got to meet Bob Hearn, Jeannette Quintana, Guillermo Rios, Tim Marquardt, and Maniac Royalty Larry Macon and Yolanda Holder. I also saw Chuck Engle, but he was busy finishing an hour+ ahead of me. Course relatively flat on bike path and ditch bank. About 2/3 "groomed" gravel. A little dizzy from the 14 bridge crossings and 90 and 180 degree turns. Inaugural running of this race. Would recommend to all not in search of an absolute PR. 57-66°
Santa Rosa 08/29/10 Santa Rosa CA 3:51:07 Marathon 135 52/ 184   1/ 7 More great weather for August, 51-61°! Nursed a tight hamstring for the last 16 miles, but overall a great day. Chatted with many Maniacs.
Santa Rosa 08/28/11 Santa Rosa CA 3:55:19 Marathon 349 219/ 416   2/ 3 51-70° Ace (EWDOG) Ewing (#4130) escorted me across finish line after I took a tumble after mile 26. A good day.
Silicon Valley 10/29/00 San Jose CA 3:19:08 Marathon   306   7 50-60°F
Silicon Valley 10/28/01 San Jose CA 3:15:12 Marathon   77   1 55-60°F
Silicon Valley 10/31/04 San Jose CA 3:28:53 Marathon   85/ 636   6/ 79 52-62°F
Silver State 08/28/94 Sparks NV 3:20:21 Marathon   15/ 160   7/ 36 55-70°F 4000 ft elevation. Goes around a dry lake. Desert landscape.
St. George 10/01/94 St. George UT 3:01:27 Marathon   273/ 3082   18/ 290 45-60°F Unique race. Some like this downhill course for PR possibilities. I found the altitude canceled out the drop. It was unique in other respects, though. Only race that had bonfires and lighted portable toilets at the start. It was also the only race where they diligently made you show your race number to get on the bus. How many people would impersonate a marathoner to get a free bus ride 26 miles out of town into the desert? The portable toilets weren't that great. The unique feature I liked the least was the motel tried to change the rate at check out. Is this even worse now that they are on a lottery basis?
Stockton 11/01/81 Stockton CA 2:48:12 Marathon   20/ 283   8/ 109 PR. Part of the course on gravel. 60-75°F
Trackathon 01/22/95 Sacramento CA 3:04:34 Marathon   3/ 5     47-52°F Ran on an all weather track in the rain.
Trackathon 01/21/96 Sacramento CA 2:58:51 Marathon   2/ 6     46-52°F
Volcano 01/30/88 Volcano Nat'l Park HI 3:32:56 Marathon   7/ 105   3 Unique trail marathon through stark landscape. Only marathon I ever ran where they disinfected my shoes prior to the race to avoid alien species being introduced into the National Park. 60-70°F
Western Hemisphere 12/07/80 Culver City CA 2:50:47 Marathon   14/ 200     This race used to be the second oldest (next to Boston) marathon in the US. Uneven management over the years and competition has apparently closed it down.
