69 2013 Tacoma Marathon 05/04/13 Tacoma WA 5:24.16 Marathon 273       The time is one hour too fast online. Started early, ran hard. 2:20 half, in spite of the hills. The hills and heat on the back half just destroyed me. NOW I remember all the hills of Tacoma. Liked the old course better. Still it was a great weekend getting to see (and get passed) by so many Maniacs at the reunion!

67 2013 Circular Logic Marathon 03/23/13 W. Lafayette IN 4:25.18 Marathon 17 56/ 127 32/ 60 3/ 7 ALL-TIME PR BY 19 MINUTES!!!! 36 MINUTE A.D. PR!! Maybe it was the fact that it was the coldest marathon I have run. Maybe the fact that it is basically a flat one mile loop (I love loops and need flat). Maybe it was the fact that it was back in W. Lafayette, a couple of miles from Purdue's campus and I wore a Purdue jersey. Whatever it was, I ran a 2:07 half, running straight through, but with my heart rate in check, and I was able to run like I have never run before. It was a great marathon. I highly recommend it. Race director (and Maniac) Joe Ely was great. Got to run with Pascal, Jen Savage, and of course Mary and Nancy. Awesome!
66 2013 Cowtown Ultra 02/24/13 Fort Worth TX 6:01.57 50 km 3099 258/ 420 170/ 250 8/ 18 My FIRST Ultra. It went really well. Got to run with a number of Maniacs off and on all day - Patrick Finney, Dave Bell, Frank Mueller and saw Clyde Shank and Jeff Venerable out in the ultra. Hilly for me, but normal for Fort Worth. Ran the marathon split in 4:58.00. Had I realized there was a timing strip there I could have easily done a 4:55. I was at a 4:38 where the ultra pulled off at 25 I poked, stopped to text Ali, talk. In any case, thrilled to break 5 in the marathon for the first time since my "event". Should have broken 6 for the 50K. Really enjoyed the event. A good one in spite of the hills.
65 2012 Marine Corps Marathon 10/28/12 Arlington VA 5:38.58 Marathon 29708 19820/ 23515 11841/ 13520 615/ 750 How can anyone not love this race? Had a ball - most enjoyable one yet! I got to run with Lora Eklund for the first seven miles, Chris Carnahan the next 13, with Steve Yee for a few throughout, and saw so many of my MM friends. I almost didn't run due to injury, ran double the miles in the race than I had in the prior two months, my heart rate monitor didn't work from the start, and still beat 2011's time. Awesome!!
64 2012 Christiana Healthcare Delaware Marathon 05/13/12 Wilmington DE 5:01.49 Marathon 51       MY 50TH STATE!! I had the honor of being escorted by my posse made up of Steve Hughes, Pascal Radley, Tracey Newenhouse, and Stephanie Zehr along with two or three other people throughout the event. Steve and Pascal ran every step of the way with me doing their best to help me break the 5 hour barrier one more time. We were ahead of pace until the hill (and heat) at mile 24 consumed me. Finished with my AD PR by eight minutes and knowing that if I were on a flatter course with cooler weather that a sub-5 would be a lock. What a celebration afterwards with Glen Anderson who also finished his 50th state as well. What a great weekend and what a great race to do it at. Terrific event!
63 2012 Martian Marathon 04/14/12 Dearborn MI 5:09.02 Marathon 10134 366/ 434 263/ 291 23/ 29 It was gray, cool, rainy and perfect running weather. Fun event and my fastest since my cardiac arrest. Got to run with Lori Schwartz and Kevin Moore for awhile. Hated all the gradual hills as they kept pushing the HR up, but running 20 pounds lighter with a still sprained ankle, I was thrilled with a 5:08. Was on sub 5 hr pace until 23.5 when the last of the hills hit.
62 2012 Athen Marathon` 04/01/12 Athens OH 6:08.53 Marathon 77 183/ 189 131/ 136 8/ 9 I ran the race with still with a badly sprained ankle. I ran the first eight or nine miles in 11:30s, but was relieved to come upon Larry Macon and Jim Simpson and happily walked the last four hours with them - my ankle was happy! We all had a ball, even though for some reason the gun time shows I started on the starting line...not so.
61 2012 B&A Trail Marathon 03/04/12 Annapolis MD 5:13.47 Marathon 1330 287/ 328 206/ 233   This was a fun race. It was windy and cold, but it made running easy. I got to see a bunch of my MM friends I hadn't seen in some time. Ran the first 14 miles with Ray Shaw and had a ball. Set a A.D. PR, but a little pissed at the times. I took an early start and they did something funky by making us all walk through the timing grid and then started the race about three minutes past that. I crossed the finish line at 4:11 on the clock, and we started less than an hour before the regular race, but still wound up with a 5:13?!?! Still, I won't complain (much).
60 2012 26.2 with Donna 02/12/12 Jacksonville FL 5:18.57 Marathon 1979 1192   30/ 48 Boy it was cold. 27 degrees at the start and with wind on the course of 15 MPH at times, the wind chill had to be in the low 20s. Outside of that, it was great to run #60 at the same place I ran my first marathon 4 years ago. Ran 6+ miles with Diane Bolton - ALWAYS fun - but saw very few other MMs on the course. Most were probably bundled up or wearing pink. For not having run since Maui due to a bad back I was thrilled to turn in my second fastest time since my "event' in '11, and to actually beat the time I posted - well trained - for my first marathon in 2008.
59 2012 Maui Oceanside Marathon 01/22/12 Maui HI 5:54.42 Marathon 134 332/ 413 22/ 29 22/ 29 Had a great time running Maui. Ran the early start (4:30 am!?) and glad I did. Very warm toward the end and most of my running friends went early. Ran the whole race with Jody Reed (finishing 50 states) and Rori Russo (future MM doing her first). Ran 11 miles with Elaine Green, and sprinted with Chuck Engle for about a dozen strides to his horror when he passed me. Saw whales and all in all had a great leisurely time since we knew we were going to be given a 6:00hr min, and in the end, we weren't. Great race.
58 2012 Zoom! Yah! Yah! 01/07/12 Northfield MN 5:18.31 Marathon 17 38/ 46 28/ 32 4/ 4 A triumphant return to Zoom Yah Yah. It was an emotional race, and I actually ran the half faster than I did last year when I died. To be able to run with Mary Lenari, Paul Milo and Nancy Marino, to have Denis McCarthy and Dave Holmen in the race, and to have the overwhelming support all the way around the track was special. Hats off to Dick Daymont and Dennis Easley for putting on the race that I still rank #1 on my all-time favorite list.
57 11-11-11 Marathon of Sarasota 11/11/11 Sarasota FL 6:40.25 Marathon 1111 63/ 67 30/ 34 3/ 3 Now I see why race directors don't run their own race! I must have ran 31-32 miles total between setting the race up, running off course to present medals, coordinate the DJ, and help manage the race, but it was worth it. To have so many friends into Sarasota and run 58.7 loops with them was a blast!
56 2011 Marine Corps Marathon 10/30/11 Arlington VA 5:57.51 Marathon 18898 17986/ 20940 11059/ 12388 577/ 720 It was cold, but it was fun. Saw about 50 of the MMs and got to run with Arland & Annette Blanton, Patrick Finney, Carole Earles, Randy Donaladson and Lori Denton for parts of the way. Lori did a good job of keeping Randy and I from 'begin stupid', as she termed it. A great race as always!
55 2011 Ing Hartford Marathon 10/15/11 Hartford CT 6:15.40 Marathon 1567 2274/ 2314 1410/ 1424 82/ 83 What a downer of a race. Started out with Kathy Ryan of Hood to Coast fame. Was directed OFF course twice by POLICE within first five miles. Garmin showed 7.5 at mile 6, where Kathy fell and did a horrible face plant. Took 15 minutes to get her into ambulance. Caught next to last place walker at mile 8.5. Did pass about 40 runners. No aid stations the last five miles and had to run sidewalk and stairs. Ugly.
54 2011 Fox Cities Marathon 09/18/11 Appleton WI 5:15.13 Marathon 277 662/ 840 422/ 492 39/ 50 What a Maniac Reunion! Did only my 2nd early start, and enjoyed it. Some days you are the bug, and some days you are the windshield. Today I was the windshield. AD PR by 15 minutes! Led for the first 2 miles until I did a face plant. Great course - pretty flat and great weather. Ran with Carol Earles and Elaine Green. Great race!
53 2011 American Discovery Trail Marathon 09/05/11 Colorado Springs CO 5:47.23 Marathon 155 393/ 420 242/ 249 17/ 19 This was a very scenic race and only the second that I have run primarily NOT on pavement. Between gun timing and a BAD case of the 'runs' causing me to lose 14 minutes in the woods and porta-johns, my time stunk, but I can't complain about my performance. After my first potty break where I was running with my favorite Utah friends, I ran by myself with no one near me, the rest of the way. Minimalist marathon, but fun, even considering the altitude (7200') and hills.
52 2011 Moose's Tooth Marathon 08/21/11 Anchorage   5:30.47 Marathon 74 288/ 328 170/ 183 13/ 14 A very fun marathon. Took my first ever early start and ran with lead group - leading at mile 10 until the REAL leader ran by. What a hoot. Great course along the water and on paved trails, NOT flat but very scenic. Great weather. Ran the first 12 with Elaine Green - a lot of fun.
51 2011 Mad Marathon 07/10/11 Waitsfield VT 6:17.50 Marathon 486 435/ 459   39/ 39 My last race as a 56 yr old was absolutely the most BRUTAL race I have EVER run. Hills? Hell no. MOUNTAINS! Made Hatfield McCoy seem flat. They go on forever! The "dip" was inhumane, and we had to do it twice. It would have been nice if the race director had been clearer on the terrain on their web site. Got to run 16 miles w/Donna Jacobs and probably 10 w/Laura Gorycki which was great fun. LOTS of MMs, and great to see them, but most were to tired to talk at the finish!
50 2011 Hatfield McCoy Marathon 06/11/11 Goody, KY KY 6:02.34 Marathon 45 181/ 237 128/ 149 16/ 20 This was brutal. High heat, humidity, HILLS - no, mountains, and my heart rate monitor quit working before mile 1. Lot's of MMs and a lot of fun before and after the run. TOUGH course.
49 2011 Fargo Marathon 05/21/11 Fargo ND 5:46.04 Marathon 786 2096/ 2212 1246/ 1291 80/ 84 This is an awesome race. I had the honor of running 20 miles with Larry Macon, and was joined by Elaine Green and Steve Hughes for much of the race. Flat, 60 degrees and cloudy. Perfect. I WILL come back here again. (My time was indicative of how much fun I was having with Larry, not the difficulty of the course.) 2:33 half
48 2011 Cox Sports Marathon 05/01/11 Providence RI 5:42.04 Marathon 399 1118/ 1192 692/ 716 109/ 114 My first race A.D. - I wasn't sure if I'd ever get to add another race here, and it was more memorable than my first. MM Tracey Newenhouse sacrificed her race to run the whole way with me, and Don Pemberton ran most of it. It was special to have two people wanting to join me for the trip. Had tears in my eyes at the finish. Huge Maniac congregation - led by my wife - cheered me in from a block away. Very, very special! To top it off, even running with my heart rate alert, it was far from my slowest marathon.
47 2010 Rocket City Marathon 12/11/10 Huntsville AL 4:58.54 Marathon 545 966/ 1147 680/ 782 44/ 55 Relatively flat course - just a few hills that didn't bother me too much. There were some desolate stretches of the course that were exacerbated by the enforced BAN ON HEADPHONES. Got to run with MMs Sue Mantyla, Eric Kass, David Rikke and Frank Muller. The expo, start and finish being at the Holiday Inn was great. All in all a nice way to end the marathoning year.
46 2010 Tulsa Marathon 11/21/10 Tulsa OK 5:25.52 Marathon 1718 1158/ 1158 778/ 937 58/ 80 MY 10TH STAR!! What a great weekend (except for having to run the race). Brutal course - hills the first 14 then a headwind to mile 21 that would have been called a Tropical Storm in FL. MM Arland Blanton ran the entire race with me, put up with my whining, and got me to the finish (THANKS!). Mary Lenari and the 75 or so MMs and 50 Staters made it special with a surprise poster in our VIP tent at the finish. Thanks to all so much, thanks to the Tulsa race director for our tent - it was a race I will always remember!
45 2010 OBX Marathon 11/14/10 Kill Devil Hills (Outer Banks) NC 5:07.44 Marathon 845 1209/ 1660 751/ 937 39/ 56 This was a great race! Thought I was going to PR until I just cramped and died at 24.5. Ran with MM Tracey Newenhouse for 16 miles, then caught up with MM Bill Sherman until 24.5. Mostly flat but the trail part was much hillier than I expected. The bridge at 22.5 zapped me. Great event, I really liked it.
44 2010 Marshall University Marathon 11/07/10 Huntington WV 4:58.57 Marathon 103 433/ 517 314/ 353 29/ 35 Late to the start by 5:33 after iPhone fell back 2hrs instead of 1. Took 1/2 mile to see anyone and 1 mile to catch walkers. Great course. Flat and great running weather. Saw lots of Maniacs. Ran w/Patrick Finney on his 10 star day after catching up with him at mile 12. Last 200 yards scores a TD on Marshall's football field. Neat!
43 2010 Athens Marathon 10/31/10 Athens GRC 5:24.35 Marathon 10093 7961/ 10083     I set out to enjoy this one and take a bunch of pictures as I knew it was a very challenging course! The 800' climb from mile 10 to 20 was just a drag. The last 6 miles were all downhill and I flew through them. Saw a number of Maniacs and ran with Jeff Venerable for a while. The experience of running into the stadium to finish the 2500th anniversary marathon was absolutely exhilarating. Injured foot made it through - three more to get through for 10 stars!
42 2010 Des Moines Marathon 10/17/10 Des Moines IA 5:11.21 Marathon 706 1360/ 1634 855/ 959 48/ 55 What a great marathon! Ran the first 24 with MM buddy Russ Smith - finally left him at 24 when his cramps just wouldn't let him run at all. Mary Lenari's 50th state made this extra special. MUST-DO marathon.
41 2010 Steamtown Marathon 10/10/10 Scranton PA 4:56.00 Marathon 772 1740/ 1952 1092/ 1220 93/ 108 Great organization, great weather, great marathon! Ran the first 24 miles with MM Randy Donaldson, a real neat guy who tried to get me to a PR. 1000 ft elevation drop was nice. Ran out too strong (duh) at 2:17 half and didn't have enough left for the hills the last 3.5 miles. Saw lots of MMs. Great race! Must do!
40 2010 Maine Marathon 10/03/10 Portland ME 5:14:38 Marathon 322 832/ 989 507/ 539 37/ 38 This race seemed flat compared to NH, but it sure wasn't. Lot' of MMs and 50 staters did the double. Great fun, scenic course, nice medal. Legs were dead from day before.
39 2010 New Hampshire Marathon 10/02/10 Bristol NH 5:17:57 Marathon 112 195/ 240 144/ 169 32/ 42 Huck Fills! This was the hilliest race I have EVER run. It may singularly keep me from doing the 50 states twice. The course was scenic and I got to run with a ton of great Maniacs. This race KILLED me.
38 2010 Omaha Marathon 09/26/10 Omaha NE 4:57.17 Marathon 211 459/ 608 331/ 399 17/ 24 A good run! Ran the first hour with #2352 (Sue Mantyla) and the last 40 minutes or so with #2149 (Patrick Finney) to help keep him company. Hills between 7 & 13 were a b*tch but at least they were early. Saw LOTS of Maniacs and 50 staters. Could have easily ran 7 - 8 minutes faster but I just enjoyed the ride.
37 2010 Top Of Utah Marathon 09/18/10 Logan UT 5:07.50 Marathon 789 1530/ 1873 845/ 958 38/ 43 A MUST-DO event! Apparently I forgot how to hydrate as even my arms and back cramped. Beautiful course, great people, got to run with all my SLC friends. Just wish I wasn't so badly cramped the last six miles.
36 2010 Quebec City Marathon 08/29/10 Quebec QC 5:30.42 Marathon 801 862/ 974 685/ 769 152/ 167 The good - this was the most beautiful course I have ever run, and outside of Boston, the best spectators as well. Phenomenal organization! Got to say "Merci beaucoups" a lot! The bad - record high temp (by 3 degrees) made it the hottest marathon I have ever run. The worse - got run over by a non-marathon related bicyclist around mile 14 which ended any hopes of a good run. Will go back!

Scenic, great aid & food stations, good support, and two sitar players for entertainment. Pretty cool weather...and a tweaked back from my luggage. Good grief I sucked.
34 2010 San Francisco Marathon 07/25/10 San Francisco CA 6:00.19 Marathon 70611 4408/ 4408 112/ 112 3063/ 3063 GOT MY SEVENTH STAR!! Lot's of Maniacs. Scenic course but lots of REALLY steep hills. My dilly-dallying with photos almost cost me a sub-5. The sprint to the finish the last 1/2 mile nearly caused me to puke!
33 2010 Foot Traffic Flat Marathon 07/04/10 Portland (Sauvie Island) OR 4:44.22 Marathon 81 298/ 395 172/ 206 12/ 15 PR! PR! PR! Great course (as flat as they get in the NW - but NOT flat), great weather and a lot of Maniacs on the course. Beautiful run along the river on the out and back. Do this one!
32 2010 Swan Lake Marathon 06/13/10 Viborg SD 4:58.33 Marathon 79 56/ 87 43/ 61 3/ 5 2nd half of a double. Mud run. Rained on an already wet course. Got to see a bunch of MMs! Nice people at Swan Lake but the course - 2/3 on dirt/gravel - real sucks when it gets wet. MY FIRST AGE GROUP AWARD! Combined with Maryville, my double took over 1 hour 27 minutes off my best previous double-time. (Gun-timed)
31 2010 Maryville Marathon 06/12/10 Maryville MO 4:49.52 Marathon 22 51/ 67 31/ 40 10/ 11 First half of a double. This marathon sucked. Lot's of hills, lousy and dangerous. Almost got hit by a car. No Maniac shirts on the course. I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. Still recorded my 2nd fastest run.
30 2010 Casper Marathon 06/06/10 Casper WY 5:53.45 Marathon 130 139/ 153 98/ 106 29/ 31 Altitude + Asthma + Marathon = Asthma Attack at mile 10. Ugly. REAL ugly. Talked EMTs into letting me finish at mile 18. First 10K OK - 59 min. Have great fun in spite of it all. Walked last six with Larry Macon - what a treat.
29 2010 Coeur d'Alene Marathon 05/30/10 Coeur d'Alene ID 4:56.20 Marathon 157 331/ 452 190/ 221 15/ 20 Scenic course. Hills from 11 to 18 were depressing! Ran 16 miles with Ray Shaw (McGyver)and about a mile at the end with Marie Zorst, both of WA. Hills and altitude obviously had an impact, but I will take another sub-5. Medal was dinky!
28 2010 Tacoma Marathon 05/02/10 Tacoma WA 4:50.39 Marathon 181 304/ 391 197/ 239 27/ 30 What a great race - except for the stinkin' hills. Most difficult course (by a bunch) that I have ever run. Whew. It was a sea of yellow Maniac shirts and the energy of them all pushed me to my second fastest PR. Thanks to McGyver (Ray Shaw) and the 4:30 group for keeping me going until the monster hill at 16. Loved the downhill finish. Ran and talked with too many MMs to mention - it was neat! Sarasota has adopted the Salt Lake City group as our sister city! Kudos to Tony, Steve, Chris and Paul for a great event!
27 2010 Boston Marathon 04/19/10 Boston MA 5:41.05 Marathon 25505 21293/ 22540 12458/ 13072 1040/ 1111 Wow, what an experience! It was everything it was hyped to be and then some! Legs were heavy early from the double previous weekend but the unbelievable energy on the course kept me going. Wellesley was crazy! BC as well. Great time afterward at John Harvard's in Cambridge with MM #1, #2, #3, #9 and so many others. Heartbreak Hill wasn't as bad as Little Rock!
26 2010 Southern Indiana Classic 04/11/10 Evansville IN 6:24.49 Marathon 4208 308/ 324 196/ 202 15/ 16 Had the pleasure of helping two good friends complete their 1st marathon in my home for 50 yrs. Both hit their goals, I had a ball running, joking w/course workers & drank my first beer during a marathon. Walked 90% of it - walking isn't easy for a runner!
25 2010 Olathe Marathon 04/10/10 Olathe KS 4:56.20 Marathon 1515       This was a much better marathon that I expected. LOTS of little hills and bridges. Knee was great, great weather, PR pace until at mile 23 I knew I had to push and decided to leave something in the tank for tomorrow's race. Enjoyed running with MMs Eric Kass & Morgan Cummings.
24 2010 Ocean Drive Marathon 03/28/10 Cape May County NJ 5:02.42 Marathon 153 495/ 607   75/ 87 IT band finally is well! Nine plus minutes in porta-john at mile 10 with, er, issues killed chance of PR. Cold wind in the face, brrr. Ran with Clyde from Dallas and Jen from Alaska.
23 2010 Little Rock Marathon 03/07/10 Little Rock AR 5:19.43 Marathon 742 1137/ 1543 773/ 970 57/ 80 Whew, the Little Rock hills kicked this 'Flatlander's' butt (and IT band). Good run through the half - disaster once we hit the mountains. Enjoyed running and finishing w/fellow MM Paul Fourner.
22 2010 Rock 'N' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon 02/28/10 New Orleans LA 6:12.43 Marathon 17089 3056/ 3509 1778/ 1958 110/ 121 Used this as a rehab training run - came through OK. Great fun. Ran with local MMs Mary Lenari and Paul Milo and finished with Larry Macon and Yolanda Holder. Terrific PR course. Will come back again and run healthy.
21 2010 Ing Miami Marathon 01/31/10 Miami FL 5:49.30 Marathon 5190 2547/ 2904 64/ 76 1718/ 1891 Simply put, IT Band failure. First 7 miles, great! Next 5.5, not so much. Last 13.7, utter hell. Hopped last tenth to the finish. Just proved I won't ever quit. Hated the marathon, way too much congestion.
20 2010 InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon 01/24/10 Milwaukee WI 5:01.42 Marathon 1032 76/ 123 53/ 63 13/ 15 IT band issues from lap one. :( Happy to run this fast. At least 8 MM there - saw them all often. Great event, well organized and 55 degrees in the Petit Ice Center throughout. Not Zoom Yah! Yah! but certainly more fun than a lot of the other marathons that I have run.
19 Zoom Yah! Yah! Indoor Marathon 01/10/10 Northfield MN 4:59.21 Marathon 126 36/ 42 33/ 36 5/ 5 This is a GREAT event. I felt like it was a party and we were the invited guests. Never got bored, perfect temp, St. Olaf women's track team awesome. Biggest problem was running laps not miles you forget to hydrate & I cramped badly early. Can't wait to do it again. Ran with Russ Smith, Stan and Spinach (Dave).
18 Las Vegas Rock 'N' Roll Marathon 12/07/09 Las Vegas NV 5:30.00 Marathon 21086 3917/ 5886 2466/ 3331 125/ 186 What is the deal with the corral start and walkers being 10 corrals ahead of us? What a mess for three miles. Liked the course, except the 13 mile uphill stretch from 7 - 20 took its toll. Saw tons of Maniacs on the course! Enjoyed the run even though it was cold. Second fastest race for me a week after a PR.
17 Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon 11/28/09 Bay St. Louis MS 4:46.02 Marathon 82 70/ 109 52/ 77 4/ 8 PR! PR! PR! Ran a PR even though I got lost on the course due to poor markings just after mile 16 and added .25 miles. Gun time added another 15 seconds. Should have been a 4:43, but I won't complain. Two lap course was flat, but with only 120 marathoners, after the half completed there were BIG spaces between runners. Scenic run around the John Stennis Space Center. Met and ran with Vickie Becker #1134 from NY running her 49th state.
16 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 11/05/09 Indianapolis IN 5:03.42 Marathon 2046 1627/ 1978 68/ 1265 68/ 95 Great weather, great course, great time - great race!! Cramped again badly at mile 24. Was on a PR pace until then. Fantastic food at finish. Lot's of MM. Stay downtown at Sheraton - walk to and from start/finish. Only complaint was rough streets on the last 3M.
15 2009 Marine Corps Marathon 10/25/09 District of Columbia DC 5:24.39 Marathon 19989 17024/ 21279 10860/ 12898 458 Ran way to fast trying to slow 15yr old Ben down for the first 8 miles. Started cramping at 8, cramped REAL bad at 12(!?) and just eased it in and enjoyed (as much as possible) the race from there. Learned my lesson once and for all. still loved it all!
14 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon 10/11/09 Chicago IL 5:22.46 Marathon 28896 25421/ 33608 15600/ 19041 615/ 840 REALLY enjoyed the race. Got to run for 3 - 4 miles near halfway w/Marathon Junkie and Shannon "Jellyfish". MJ was running his 1st 4 hr marathon w/torn hip flexor (still beat me). My 1st race back from 2 surgeries was a success. Thought I was going to PR until bad r/quad cramps took me down at 24.5 miles. Would have been overjoyed if 29 seconds faster. God willing, will be back in 2010.
13 2009 Snickers Marathon 03/07/09 Albany GA 5:09.13 Marathon 180 484/ 593 322/ 370 46/ 58 Fun marathon. Was on PR pace until I bonked at 22.5. Forgot to nourish at mile 18. Lost motivation after I couldn't PR and took a couple miles off. Relatively flat course. Great volunteers. Ran with fellow SRQer Stephanie Zehr all the way, and other Maniacs Tim Cook and McGwyver. Great marathon!
12 2009 Sarasota Grouper Run Marathon 02/15/09 Sarasota FL 5:47.16 Marathon 432 401/ 434 242/ 254 31/ 32 This was my first double - having run Myrtle Beach the day before. Ran the first 10 miles at a 4:50 clip, knowing that I was running too fast...then had a "systems shut down" at mile 15. Was happy to finish. We had 4 Maniacs doing this double and we were all happy we completed it. The weather was pretty warm at the finish, with our typical Sarasota humidity at 90+ percent.
11 2009 Myrtle Beach Marathon 02/14/09 Myrtle Beach SC 5:43.20 Marathon 4045 1641 1066 122 First half of my first ever double-weekend. Ran the whole race with my coach, Mary Lenari - a true treat. Her goal was to keep me at a 13 min/mile pace, which she did. It rained the entire last 13.1 miles, not fun. Course is a PR course and I'd like to run it again when I don't have to run another one the next day.
10 2009 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona 01/18/09 Phoenix AZ 5:28.26 Marathon 7413 5183/ 6411 2987/ 3439 317/ 367 This is absolutely a PR course. Ran it as a training race - five weeks removed from surgery. Ran it with Paul Milo (73) and we had a great time. He ran his fastest marathon in three years and I thought he was going to PR for a long time. Fun time. Will do it again.
9 2008 San Antonio Marathon 11/16/08 San Antonio TX 5:46.00 Marathon 18531       Wonderful D-Tag didn't pick up my finish time, although they took all sorts of photos of me crossing the finish and it picked up my time at the 40K mark. Have requested a correction. Hamstring lasted until 25.25 miles this time out. Good marathon outside of the timing screw-up.
8 2008 Marine Corps Marathon 10/26/08 Arlington VA 5:15.41 Marathon 18951 13279/ 18298 8685/ 11139 691/ 943 What a fantastic marathon! The spectacle of 19,000+ marathoners, thousands of marines and what seemed like 150,000 spectators. I know I heard my name shouted out 1000 times, as well as "Go Maniacs!". Had a good PR going until my right leg (only) cramped in five different muscles around mile 22. Still had a blast and there can't be much better than coming down the final 0.1 with thousands of people screaming for you to finish. Awesome event - it will be an annual affair.
7 2008 Lakefront Marathon 10/05/08 Milwaukee WI 6:21.36 Marathon 846 1936/ 1945 1153/ 1157 117/ 117 Ran this race as a training run to accompany my wife Ali who ran her first ever marathon. The course was great, the people were great, and to be able to run step for step with my wife for her first was better than completing my first. I had a blast no matter what the time said!
6 2008 New Mexico Marathon 08/31/08 Albuquerque NM 5:27.35 Marathon 1275 342/ 415 236/ 277 28/ 34 This race sucked. The trots killed me, then the altitude finished me off. ?$(*#^! organizers did not put porta-potties out where promised. Nothing until mile 13.1, 6 miles after G.I. distress had me looking for the missing one at mile 7. First flair up of asthma in 15 years at mile 18 made the last 8 miles a literal killer. Cheap Christmas-tree ornament medal was the last straw. If this had been my first marathon it would have been my last.
5 Run Wild Missoula 07/13/08 Missoula MT 4:58.36 Marathon 130 324/ 453 199 22/ 28 This was a great race. Altitude for a sea-level runner had an impact but got another PR with my first sub-5:00 hr run. It was great to meet so many other Maniacs that had come in from around the country.
4 Madison Marathon 05/25/08 Madison WI 5:08.46 Marathon 1424 1085/ 1191 892/ 736 67/ 74 Madison was a great marathon. Loved the course. Hilly but manageable for a novice like me. Humbling as always. Goal was to break 5:00 hrs for the 1st time. Was cruising at a 4:38 pace at mile 18 when out of nowhere my right knee buckled on a climb. Still on 4:45 pace at 21.5 when I rolled ankle on same leg. Literally hopped last 0.1 mile to finish. Grrr.
3 2008 Country Music Marathon 04/26/08 Nashville TN 5:23:42 Marathon 15209 3392/ 4400 2032/ 2474 160/ 211 Nashville wasn't as much fun as I expected. Neither the energy from the bands nor the course. HILLY. Coming from FL, maybe I should say MOUNTAINS. Was a PR, but since it was only #3, no big accomplishment. Goal was 4:59:59. Next time. Race was well organized. Oh yeah, running in a downpour sucks.
2 2008 Sarasota Marathon 03/02/08 Sarasota FL 5:14:57 Marathon 295 444/ 520 281/ 316 30/ 33 SRQ is a decent marathon, but was anticlimactic after running my first marathon in Jacksonville two weeks prior. Very flat except for Mt. Sarasota (Ringling Bridge which you cross twice). Same scenic runs that I make every week. Need more porta-johns at start and the crowds around the course were very sparse. T-shirts were same for marathon and half...hmmm. Being from here I will do it every year as long as it doesn't conflict with JAX. Set PR, no big whoop since it was just my 2nd. Made mistake of running first 3 miles with my wife and daughter running their first halfs - at their pace (47 min). When guy on crutches passed us at 3, I had to say goodbye... Lessons learned.
1 2008 26.2 with Donna 02/17/08 Jacksonville FL 5:26:39 Marathon 1994 945/ 1680 414/ 600 44/ 75 Wow! First marathon ever, but if it gets better than this I can't wait. Smiled for 23 straight miles. Everything about marathon was great except for the start time which resulted in 84 degree heat for last three miles on expressway (no shade). Beach run wasn't real fun, but doable. So much energy and emotion on the course from the crowd. Probably 25 impromptu water stations in front of homes. You have to do this marathon. Didn't know what to expect, but goal was to finish, and I did indeed, just behind Jeff Galloway (mentor). My chip time was better!
