Ran 35K on Antarctica and the final 7K about three hours later after flying back to Punta Arenas, Chile.
Solar Eclipse Marathon 11/14/12 Port Douglas AUS 6:00:53 Marathon         6th Continent -- the first ever Solar Eclipse Marathon was held in Port Douglas, Australia to coincide with the Total Solar Eclipse. This 42.195 km trail Marathon started at 6:41 am as the first rays of the sun re-emerged from behind the moon thus incorporating the Eclipse as the world's first intergalatic starting gun.

The lake, the topography -- and even some runners -- were beautiful. It was fun running 78.6 miles with good people who welcome challenging themselves a little. Met and spent time with fellow runners Atsushi Kato of Tokyo, Japan, and Bruno St-Pierre of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Maybe we'll hook up again some day. I want to make a book recommendation here: "Born to Run,' by Christopher McDougall, an AP reporter. I'd guess that I've read between 20 and 30 books about running. This is No. 1. Well written with soul.

What happened? Wish I knew. I've run in hotter weather without major problems. But I had nothing in the tank on this day. I was out of gas by the 2-mile mark. I haven't decided if it was just a bad day, or the end of the line for me. We'll see.

Single-digit temperatures not too bad compared to most years, but never easy. Fifteenth finish. This event has the toughest and best aid station volunteers in America. Hardy volunteers keep the fluids thawed out even if the volunteers are not.

Grandma's Marathon 06/20/09 Duluth MN 4:23:24 Marathon         Finished Grandma's Marathon for 20th time. My slowest ever Grandma's, but I suspect I might be saying that every year I run it from here on out. No matter how I do, it will always be a hometown race to be proud of. The race officials and the town do an outstanding job for the runners.
Afton Trail 50-K 07/04/09 Afton State Park MN 7:14:54 50 km         Seventh Afton 50-K completed. Many helpful volunteers, plentiful refreshments, nice trails.
Moose Mountain Marathon 09/12/09 Lutsen MN 6:55:02 Marathon         I have now completed races of 100 miles, 50 miles, 50 kilometers and 26.2 miles on the Superior Hiking Trail. This marathon, the Leadville Mosquito Marathon and Pikes Peak Marathon are the three toughest 26.2-mile races I've finished. This race has mile upon mile of rocks and roots -- especially roots -- leading to dicey foot placements. Toss in this year's heat and humidity and three or four tough climbs and it's all an old man like me can handle. I hope to be more well rested next year and prepared to give it a better run. Twin Cities Marathon 10/04/09 Mpls.-St. Paul MN 4:13:48 Marathon 1884     40/ 131 23rd straight Twin Cities Marathon completed. Fourth marathon in 10 days. Maybe that's why my 61-year-old ankle broke down at the 16-mile mark. Thought I had a chance to get under 4 hours so I picked up the pace at the halfway point. Ankle couldn't handle it. Popped aspirin and limped it in. I apparently bit off more than I could chew this time. Might have to walk most of the Ashland Marathon Saturday to keep my streak alive of running all of the Whistlestops. [There is one positive thing about running a lot of marathons without much time off: Your body gets used to running on tired legs. You can run even -- or even negative -- split marathons, but it's easier for your body to handle that stress when you're younger.]

Northwoods Snowshoe Marathon 01/16/10 Duluth MN 7:46 Marathon       1 Unseasonably pleasant 30-plus degree temperatures; unpleasant 12 to 18 inches of sugar snow to slip and slide through while turning your ankles over inside your snowshoes. This was my 16th and final time running this 26.2-mile beast in the snow. The race has been discontinued, but it won't be forgotten -- the same way you don't forget a car door that you slammed on a finger. Every time I hear Sting sing "King of Pain," I'll remember this event.

Indoor Marathon at St. Olaf College was unique, well-organized, encouraged camaraderie between the runners and supporters, was hassle free, had music that a 60-something guy like me enjoyed and served the best pre-race meal of any marathon I've been in around the world. (In my next life, I'm enrolling at St. Olaf and volunteering for a job in the kitchen.) Special thanks to Britta Olsen, a St. Olaf women's track team member from Minnetonka, Minn., who counted each of the 150 laps I ran on the indoor track.

Beautiful country, brilliant fall leaves, well-organized race, dedicated and friendly volunteers, but the trail isn't very friendly. You have to concentrate on lifting your feet the entire way on this rock and root-infested course along the Lake Superior Hiking Trail. I've run Pikes Peak, Leadville, and Old Dominion and this is a much tougher trail to run on. I'd compare it in degree of trail difficulty/technicality with the Wasatch 100-miler, but obviously much shorter.

Bataan Memorial Death March 03/27/11 White Sands Missle Range NM 4:28:28 Marathon 3468 78/ 1121   3/ 110 (12) Sand, bigtime wind, and some long, steep climbs make this one of the 5 toughest 26.2 mile races I have completed. I would say that when I was 32 years old and I certainly will say that now at 62. Some locals said it is always windy in March in that part of the Texas-New Mexico border, but this was an especially windy, tough day to run, some said. No argument here. A very patriotic event with a moving jet flyover at the start of the race. It was an honor at the finish line to get to shake the hands of two survivors of the World War II Baatan Death March.

Ran on a strained Achilles' tendon, which I injured while running eight marathons in 10 weeks this fall. I was happy just to finish this one in a limp. Will rest the Achilles and hopefully be able to return to marathoning next year. Most runners stayed on the Las Vegas Strip for this one. I stayed seven miles away in a seedy part of Las Vegas and walked seven miles back to my hotel from the finish line after the marathon. I didn't see any runners at my hotel. Just drug dealers, gangsters and people down on their luck. How tough a place was it? They issued me a handgun and stiletto when I checked in. I needed them because I had to sleep with my door and eyes open. It was 150 degrees in the room and no other way to lower the temperature other than to leave the front door open. No gangster was crazy enough to enter the room of a guy who left his door open in an inviting manner. Hopefully, my Achilles' tendon will return to the shape of my sense of humor next year.

Wasatch Trail 100 09/09/00 Layton to Sundance UT 35:55:52 100 mi         187 starters, 125 finishers. I hallucinated. Thought I was driving a car. Wasn't hallucinating when I heard and then saw two Moose locking horns in the middle of the trail about 75 miles into the race. I ran up into the bramble to get around them. In many respects my most satisfying finish ever because of what I had to overcome to finish with a whole four minutes to spare. I dropped out of Western States at 55 miles in June, otherwise I would have finished the Grand Slam of 100-milers this summer. I finished the Old Dominion 100-miler in June, Leadville, Colorado 100-miler in August and Wasatch. I had a grand slam of sorts though -- I threw up in all four of the 100 milers I attempted this summer. State No. 16. Fourth 100-miler completed.

Includes a unique .7-mile-long former railroad tunnel that runners pass through twice. Flashlights are provided for the trip through the tunnel. It's one of the best small-town marathons I have run. I highly recommend it to marathoners and half-marathoners who like running trails.

Run With Horses Marathon 08/25/07 Green River WY 4:13:56 Marathon         State No. 27. Shrimp boil and corn on the cob for the best pre-race meal I ever ate -- even if it lacked carbs. Challenging course. I discarded a warmup I didn't really need and the thoughtful race director mailed it back to me.
