1:20 negative split (1:50:28 at half), but took <1 min bathroom break at start of second half. Went in with super low expectations and was overjoyed/emotional as I crossed the finish line to have done better than expected (first time I remember feeling that-- much of it was bc I felt that running wasn't over for me after all, despite the recent injuries/car accident)..but that obviously all changed just one hour later when I heard the news from another runner in the hotel gym shower. |

Despite threats of Hurricane Sandy, we got near perfect weather -- mid to high 50s and overcast. Just a little drizzle and head winds in patches.
Coming off my L5 vertebra fracture (10 wks ago) followed by the cab accident (2 wks ago -- just 5 days after the x-ray cleared me to move/run again :-(), I had low expectations - had only run or worked out a grand total of 9 times since the vertebra accident on 8/18/12, most in the 3-5 mile range and all in the last 2 wks. I'd gotten in just one 'longish' run at 17 miles, between the 10/11/12 x-ray clearing me to run and the 10/16/12 cab accident that took me back to square one.
So I took my time, arrived late, and started with the 4:30-4:45 group, thinking I'd be lucky to finish in 4:15-4:30. I didn't want to block other runners or tempt myself to go too fast, when I wasn't supposed to be running the marathon at all. But I'd forgotten how packed it'd be, and ended up spending the first 5 miles weaving through walls of runners and trying to get to pace.
Thought I was in trouble by miles 5-7, with aches/pains and 'hit-the-wall' fatigue -- wasn't planning to DNF, but guessed I'd have to walk or at least jog the latter part of the course.
Thankfully, the amazing spectators, including our awesome servicemen and high-fiving kids, carried me (and so many others) through. By the halfway mark, when I realized that a sub-4:00 was actually within reach, I felt renewed energy and steadily picked up speed as my body warmed up.
By M25, I realized I had a shot at hitting my new 2014 BQ time, and picked up the pace (which surprisingly wasn't too tough - actually felt easier on my sciatica). Sadly, despite pushing up the final hill and to the finish, I missed my 2014 BQ time by 8 seconds!
I also achieved an all-time high negative split of 7:40 - not proud of that..
Average pace for my 5K splits followed by the final ~2K split: 0:09:35; 0:08:38; 0:09:02; 0:09:12; [HALF] 0:08:43; 0:08:38; 0:08:34; 0:08:23; 0:07:58. |

Very flat course, great weather (mid 50s - mid 60s, overcast whole way although a tad humid). Two very short bathroom breaks (less than 1 minute each) and two very short shoelace breaks (less than 1 minute combined). Small (1 min 13 seconds) negative split: half marathon time was 1:49:31. Longer bathrm break and shoelace stops were in second half. |

Steamy hot weather - about high 70s at start (10:40 AM) and high 80s by end. But the heat didn't bother me too much, thanks to the fabulous spectators -- I poured cold water on me the whole way which kept the heat at bay. I started in the first corral, third wave, bc I forgot to submit my newer BQ time. But turned out to be a blessing with the heat. The sciatica still bothered me, but things went better than expected given that and the heat. I wish I could go back and thank all the spectators, who stood for hours in the oppressive heat cheering us on and saving so many of us. Thanks especially to the two guys, at different points, who handed me large cloth napkins drenched in ice water. :-) |

Ran this last minute (as in Monday 4 PM pre-race -- ran via charity bib). Great weather. Neg split by 2 sec is misleading bc I took a 3-4 min bathroom break (long lines) in first half, at M13. Still injured with sciatica. |

Everything that cld've gone wrong went wrong and almost didn't run, but lucked out on course. Started 20 minutes late (got lost on way to subway). No sleep (0!) 2 nights prior, about 2-3 hrs night before (but lazing around during day). Was supposed to be much colder than orig forecast, but turned out to be not so bad. Still injured with sciatica and wore old shoes. Happily made it thru. 1:50:40 at half mark (neg split). |

Uggh, despite PERFECT WEATHER (high 50's, partly sunny) and a tail wind, this was a tough one and by M5 I feared I'd DNF. Nagging injury, minimal running, and dog-eared shoes = losing formula. Given my poor shape, I also started too fast and ended with a large (5:09 min.) positive split. But despite the early disappointment, the toughness and feeling of giving it my best made me all the more grateful to cross the finish! |

Perfect weather (mid 50s by end)! The night before and morning of I was wavering re: running vs skipping, as I had insomnia all night and what I feared was an injury from Exeter two days prior. But my B2B obligation compelled me to at least try, with the option to drop out, and once on the course the aches/pains and lack of sleep somehow faded away. Not a great time, but so immensely grateful to finish, especially given my very low expectations at the start. |
