73 Swan Lake Marathon 06/09/13   SD 5:29:22 Marathon         Kind of sore and slow from the marathon the day before. My wife took the early start and I caught up to her at mile 13. It was raining, middy and windy so I decided to stay with her for the second half of the race to keep her spirits up and help her get South Dakota. This was also a nice race, small and friendly. Well supported. I think I am happier with the wind and rain that I would have been with heat and humidity.
72 Marathon to Marathon 06/08/13 Storm Lake IA 3:56:44 Marathon         Ate at a Chinese food restaurant in Storm Lake the night before the race and spent the first seven miles wishing I hadn't. By mile 13 I was feeling totally normal and ran a negative split. Nice little race, low key and friendly.
71 Lincoln National Guard Marathon 05/05/13 Lincoln NE 3:37:26 Marathon   339/ 1458 271/ 851 34/ 93 Awesome weather this year, nice and cool but there was a little wind. I wish I wasn't carrying so much extra weight now otherwise I'd have been much faster. Time to start working on my diet.
70 Army Marathon 04/21/13 Killeen TX 3:47:11 Marathon 1389 66/ 601 54/ 376 5/ 39 Excellent inagural race! The course is gently rolling with a slight downward trend. I finally feel like I have my road marathon feel back after last year and was able to hold a nice steady pace the whole way. I'm actually considering making this an annual event so I have one I can say I've been doing since the beginning. It turns out Killeen is a nice town too.
69 Vernonia Marathon 04/14/13 Vernonia/Banks OR 4:09:45 Marathon 85       Pretty beat up from the day before so had a slow time but that's ok. This is the most scenic marathon I've done. It's a small, low-key race but definitely a hidden gem in the running world. If your fresh this is also a potentially very fast course.
68 Squak Mountain 04/13/13 Issaquah WA 5:38:39 Marathon 768 8/ 25 6/ 16 1/ 6 Very cool, low-key trail race. It's a tough course with some pretty technicle sections but I had a great time.
67 Navy Marathon 03/24/13 Corpus Christi TX 3:58:28 Marathon 20083 16/ 142 14/ 99 1/ 9 This was a inagural marathon, Corpus Christi is relatively remote an small an the Dallas Rock-n-roll marathon probably ended up getting a lot of Texas runners so all that probably helped keep the event really small but the course was very nice an this is an event that people really shoul consider. Times were slow because it was super windy, 43 mph at the start an it stayed windy all ay. Not sure it that is typical but it was calm the day before. The finishers medal was obscenely large. I had a good time.
66 Prickly Pear 50K 03/09/13 San Antonio TX 7:57:47 50 km 585       Great race in the heart of San Antonio! It was wet and muddy and I discovered that being a desert dweller I really don't know how to run effectively in sticky mud so after a good first lap and a kind of struggling second lap I decided I could best maximie my enjoyment of this race by waiting for my wife and doing the third and final lap with her. It ended up being a great decision on my part, I really had a good time.
65 El Paso Marathon 02/24/13 El Paso TX 3:39:58 Marathon 320 46/ 322   6/ 30 It was super windy and there was a sand storm. The course drops 1100 feet in the first 4.75 miles and then is very flat from there to the finish with a couple little drops and climbs thrown in toward the end. It's an ugly course but the organizers really did maximize what they had to work with and they did a good job organizing the race.
64 Javelina Jundred 10/27/12 Fountain Hills AZ 13:13:18 100 km   23/ 159 18/ 104 6/ 33 Got my 100K PR but I doubt I'll be back. Javelina is a fun race but you can only run those loops so many times. Maybe if I thought I could break 24 hours for the 100 mile but I doubt it. Still had a good time.
63 Wasatch Front 100 mile endurance Run 09/07/12 Kayesville UT 32:49:38 100 mi 203       Completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning! Wasatch is tough, tough, tough. Ran about 45 minutes faster than last year. Had a good race and great race conditions.
62 Leadville Trail 100 08/18/12 Leadville CO 29:14:00 100 mi 827       Had a great race ultil I made a bad nutrition decision at Twin Lakes inbound then suffered from there all the way to Fish Hatchery. Started to come back a bit after that but the toll had been taken. Still got my finish for the Grand Slam though!
61 Vermont 100 Mile Endurance run 07/21/12 Silver Hill Meadow VT 22:31:52 100 mi 241 79/ 325     A new 100 mile PR! Vermont was a great course and a great race. I was amazed at how much of it was runnable andof how much I actually ran. It was also really cool to run with the horses who were also having an endurance race on the same course at the same time.
60 Western States Endurance Run 06/23/12 Auburn CA 26:33:43 100.2 mi 318 184/ 384   56/ 99 Western States was an epic race, very unusual conditions this year. During the first 8 hours we had upwards of 60 mph winds up on the ridges, we had sleet and rain driven by those winds, which really stung, we had temps in the mid 30s and then a lot of drizzle and fog once it warmed a bit and the wind stopped blowing. The night and next day was beautiful though and no crushing heat, which is much more common for WS. I had a very good race, great crew and great pacer. I was the only New Mexican at WS, which was kind of fun to say when I was introducing myself to others on the course.
59 Taos Marathon 06/10/12 Taos NM 3:47:35 Marathon 178 4/ 27 3/ 18 1/ 4 Fun little race, nice course, good support, neat town to visit. What more could you ask for?
58 Segahunda Trail Marathon 05/26/12 Letchworth State Park NY 4:41:38 Marathon 120 21/ 148 19/ 106 2/ 31 Great trail run, well organized, great weather this year. Very much worth the trip up from New Mexico.
57 Jemez Mountain Trail Run 05/19/12 Los Alamos NM 6:51:10 50 km 504 30/ 144 27/ 106 7/ 32 New course this year due to fires last year. It's more rocky than the old course and there are large parts of the course that go through burnt areas. Some people said it was beautiful "because with the forest burnt down you could see big views." Personally I thought it mostly just looked like a burnt out wasteland but it's a well run race, a serious challenge and it's local.
56 Lincoln National Guard Marathon 05/06/12 Lincoln NE 3:32:02 Marathon 138 185/ 1168 149/ 683 20/ 96 Had a great race though not the conditions I was hoping for. A little too warm and windy for a PR.
55 Boston Marathon 04/16/12 Boston MA 4:13:27 Marathon 12169 11230 7491 1422 Wouldn't you know it, a record hot Boston marathon. I'm cursed I tell you. Anway, I ran like hell until the heat took me and then I slogged it on in for the finish. It's Boston, I had to try. Had a great time despite the heat but would like to go back again under cooler conditions.
54 Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon 03/25/12 White Sands Missile Range NM 3:49:01 Marathon 3438 18/ 1858 16/ 1178 5/ 325 It got really freakin hot out there but still had a good time. Will I ever run in cool weather again?!
53 Rock n Roll San Antonio 11/13/11 San Antonio TX 3:42:20 Marathon 3140 190/ 4040 152/ 2257 20/ 289 The race was HOT HOT HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! The hottest marathon I've ever run. The course was so-so.
52 Defiance 50K 10/15/11 Tacoma WA 4:57:06 50 km 119 18/ 112 16/ 71 2/ 10 The course was tougher and more convoluted than I expected but it was a really good race. There is a really steep section with a rope stretched down it that is supposed to help keep runners from falling I guess but I thought having the rope there was more dangeruos. Great BBQ after the race, all very well run!
51 The Bear Chase 50K 09/25/11 Lakewood CO 6:10:36 50 km 288 62/ 134 43/ 71 17/ 24 Can't say I was ready for this but I had my big race this season so now it's my wife's turn. This was a pretty good course though of the 10K, half-marathon, 50K and 50-mile races offered I'd only recommend the 10K and the 50K because the other two races are exclusively on the most bland parts of the course. Overall this course is for strong runners as opposed to strong hikers, lots of flats with easy, shallow climbs. It did get really hot though, maybe as high as the upper 80s. Well done race.
50 Wasatch Front 100 mile endurance run 09/09/11 Kaysville UT 33:32:52 100 mi 231 131/ 270     Wasatch is exceptionally hard but also exceptionally rewarding. The last 25 miles, especially the last 17 miles, are particularly brutal, very rocky with a lot of very steep descending. Despite that it's a fantastic race and I'm already finding myself wanting to go back next year.
49 Bighorn Trail 100 06/17/11 Dayton WY 33:11:29 100 mi 1115 87/ 110     Very hard race but beautiful. I didn't get in nearly enough mountain training for this race because of a nagging injury since Rocky but I still felt reasonably good despite the slowness.
48 Jemez Mountain Trail run 05/21/11 Los Alamos NM 7:35:52 50 km 33 37/ 149 27/ 94 7/ 29 Huge PR on this race for me. The weather was better this year, cooler, but the course is still pretty brutal.
47 Kalamazoo Marathon 05/08/11 Kalamazoo MI 3:42:00 Marathon 282 160/ 1196 138/ 693 24/ 110 It seemed like a nice course but I was very focused just trying to hold on. I had hoped to finish off my double double with a faster time but the course was harder and it was warmer than expected. There was about 1060 feet of climbing with three shot nasty climbs, two of which take place toward the end of the race.
46 Wisconsin Marathon 05/07/11 Kenosha WI 3:41:25 Marathon 580 140/ 711   22/ 72 Wisconsin is done! It was everything I wanted from a Wisconsin marathon, cheese, large, reserved Sweedish looking people clapping politly on well manicured lawns, a rock-polka band and bratwurst at the finish line! Nice course too, flat and fast with some views of Lake Michigan, nice residential areas and farmland.
45 Flying Pig Marathon 05/01/11 Cincinnati OH 3:44:05 Marathon 3298 569/ 4270 455/ 2498 83/ 402 Second race of back-toback doubles. This was a great race, great course, great support by the community! Loved this race.
44 Country Music Marathon 04/30/11 Nashville TN 3:46:11 Marathon 8082 440/ 4082 347/ 2249 45/ 332 First race in back to back doubles. The course was nice with rolling hills. It got kind of hot but the race was well supported so it wasn't bad.
43 Mt. Si 50K 04/10/11 Snoqualamie WA 4:18:46 50 km   7/ 79 7/ 49 3/ 17 This is a huge PR for me. The course climbs 1000 feet over the first 15 miles and then you turn around and come back. It was cool and rained about 70 percent of the time. When there wasn't rain there was usually some fog. It was a really beautiful course, very different from New Mexico.
42 Run Through Time Marathon 03/12/11 Salida CO 4:32:24 Marathon 394       Scenic and tough. Some really rocky sections. Probably the hardest marathon course I've run.
41 Rocky Raccoon 100 02/05/11 Huntsville TX 23:47:45 100 mi 222 67/ 314   22/ 75 My first sub-24 100-miler! It was cold and I had a hard time regulating my body temperature at night. The support is fantastic, the people are excellent but I don't think I could bear another loop on that course. One loop is nice, two loops you may notice a couple things that you missed the first time but those things look a lot like the things you did notice the first time. Beyond that it's just go, go, go. I would call it a must-do ultra though, it's a classic.
40 Ghost Town 38.5 01/16/11 Hilsboro NM 6:48:16 38.5 mi 57 10/ 68 10/ 49 5/ 21 This was the 6th and final running of the Ghost Town 38.5 and it was by far my best run yet. My best previous time was 8:07:38 and I was hoping to run a 7:45 today. I never would have concieved of running a 6:48!
39 Tucson Marathon 12/12/10 Tucson AZ 3:28:13 Marathon 729 113/ 1079 94/ 600 14/ 117 My first BQ run! I can't believe I made it!
38 Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas 12/05/10 Las Vegas NV 4:16:13 Marathon         Completed my first back-to-back marathons AND renewed my vows with my wife!
37 Death Valley Marathon 12/04/10 Furnace Creek CA 3:40:34 Marathon 276 13/ 237 13/ 169 3/ 25 Unbelievably the Death Valley Trail Marathon stands as my new marathon PR! This was just one of those rare days when everything felt perfect and everything went perfect.
36 Javelina Jundred 10/23/10 Fountain Hills AZ 16:19:51 100 km 702       Had a good time running the first 45 miles with my wife then let her crew take over and I went out on my own. I was seriously considering doing the 100 mile but in the end I decided that I'd used up all the endurance I'd built for Leadville and just completed the 100K. I broke my old 100K PR by about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
35 Duke City Marathon 10/17/10 Albuquerque NM 3:47:01 Marathon 417 83/ 372 68/ 244 10/ 41 I did way better than I thought I would! Not a race I'm likely to repeat though because I can do it any time I want for free.
34 Do-Wacka-Do 50K 09/25/10 Erick OK 6:42 50 km 20 4/ 15 4/ 11 1/ 2 A really small race in it's first year but a good race anyway. It was considerably harder than I would have guessed, had I been more fresh, treated this like an A race it still probably would have taken me 6 hours. The heat and humidity was pretty bad but I was grateful that we at least had intermittant cloud cover through the day.
33 Rio Del Lago 100-mile Endurance Run 09/11/10 Granite Bay CA 28:45:25 100 mi 50 33/ 52     This race was a kind of experiment in trying to complete two 100's within one month. It ended up working out. The race was hot and dusty but there was a lot of nice scenery. Running alongside, but well out of reach of, the American River and Folsom Lake during the heat of the day was murder but at least there was a lot of shade on various parts of the course. In the end I had a good time but I hit some seriously low points and at one point was 15 minutes behind an extended cutoff that was put in place due to vandals stripping parts of the course of its markings.
32 Turtle Marathon 09/06/10 Roswell NM 4:01:53 Marathon   9/ 39 9/ 27 4/ 10 I'd heard about this marathon but never planned on doing it because it's just an out and back along a highway in Roswell. I did it because my wife needed a long run and we were going to be in the area anyway so why not. It's not a race that I would tell everyone to do but I really did enjoy myself. It's not exactly scenic but there are some nice views across the plains early in the morning. The aid is very minimal but sufficient and the organizers love what they do an it shows. I guess it was a lot more like going to a strange city and meeting up with a bunch of other folks for a weekend long run. I really enjoyed the experience.
31 Leadville Trail 100 08/21/10 Leadville CO 27:35:31 100 mi 614 154/ 363     I've never trained as hard or in as focused a manner as I did for Leadville. I can't believe I ran in just over 27.5 hours! I sincerely believed I would run close to the 30 hour cutoff if I didn't get pulled earlier. Leadville is an amazing experience.
30 Devil Mountain 50K 07/17/10 Pagosa Springs CO 6:37:15 50 km 260 12/ 53 10/ 38 4/ 14 The run pretty much offered everything in equal measure, fast dirt roads, good single track and ATV trails, fairly significant climbs and fun descents and so sections that were very rocky and challenging. The trail is well marked but there are cows who tend to eat or trample trail markings. There was one junction where all markings were stripped away and you just had to guess which way to go though I don't think anyone got lost just added a couple miles to their race. There was also a segment of trail where cowboys were herding cattle right toward us and we had to bushwhack to keep from spooking the heard. I had a good race.
29 Run the Caldera 06/12/10 Valles Caldera National Wildlife Preserve NM 4:33:43 Marathon 169 16/ 72   3/ 17 Had an awesome race, 49 minutes better than last year and I was in good shape last year. I think the big difference is that I'm a bit lighter, it was a bit cooler and I'm training for Leadville.
28 Jemez Mountain Trail 50K 05/22/10 Los Alamos NM 9:54:46 50 km 132 101/ 152     I began the race running with my wife but she wasn't feeling well and dropped down to the half-marathon so I took off to finish on my own. Most of the rest of the run went well until a section near the end that is about 5.5 miles long. The section is kind of a wasteland because of a massive fire that took out all the trees about 5 years ago. Now that area is completely exposed and rock strewn. By the time I hit that the winds were up to 50 mph gusts and it was over 85 degrees. I probably lost 20 minutes or more slogging through that area.
27 Old Pueblo 03/06/10 Sonoita AZ 16:36:41 51.8 mi         The second race alongside my wife. The course was tough but very scenic and well planned. I was surprised by the numerous stream crossings during the last third of the race. There were at least three areas where the stream and the race course were one and the same. Despite the posted 15 hour cutoff the RD let us continue until we finished and we were well supported the whole way. You would have never guessed we were the last runners going well over the posted time. Everyone was always happy, helpful and encouraging.
26 Ghost Town 38.5 01/17/10 Hillsboro NM 11:16:41 38.5 mi         This is the first race of my year of running races alongside my wife. It is different not trying to run my fastest at my races, not that I am especially fast, but it was a good time and we had great weather.
25 Javelina Jundred 10/31/09 Fountain Hills AZ 29:44:38 101.4 mi 192       Not my best race but one I will happily take given the 50% DNF rate. I really struggled with the heat, which lead to problems with my nutrition...and so on down the line but ultimately I had a good time. This is a very well done race.
24 Palo Duro Trail 50K 10/17/09 Canyon TX 5:55:30 50 km         Had a great time at Palo Duro this year. Last year I attempted the 50-mile and was pulled, too slow due to injury. Anyway the weather was great this year, fairly mild and overcast for the first 18 or so miles then the sun came out and it started heating up.
23 New Mexico Marathon 09/06/09 Albuquerque NM 4:17:14 Marathon 1231 152/ 378 112/ 240 27/ 38 I ran this easy to use as a long training run. I ended up running back out on the course and got in 35 miles and felt pretty good. This was a very nice little marathon, one that I think highlights my hometown in a very nice way.
22 Run the Caldera 06/13/09 Valles Caldera NM 5:22:04 Marathon   23/ 48     This was an awesome trail marathon in a unique part of New Mexico that usually isn't open to the public. The run begins at 8000 feet and tops out at just over 10,000 feet. This is an awesome little run.
21 Bandera 100K Trail Run 01/10/09 Bandera TX 17:52:03 100 km   97/ 135     This was my first 100K and I loved it. I have really been struggling in my ultrarunning since Lean Horse and haven't really gotten a lot of enjoyment out of any kind of race recently so this time out I went completely and totally for a good time. My training haden't been great and my time reflects it but i finished happy and my feet were in good shape. I do think that i would have started to have some trouble with them later on though. It might be that at my size and my ability level 100K may be near my upper limits for anything but mere survival.
20 Ironman Arizona 11/23/08 Tempe AZ 5:55:20 Marathon 1230 1706/ a lot   338/ a lot Well, it wasn't a good run but then again it wasn't my worst by a long shot. I have been nursing a knee injury for the last month and a half so all I have been doing is short distance trail runs and this run is probably 80% concrete sidewalks. I suspected that my run might fall apart but I was very happy that it was not because of injury it was just because my legs and feet were beat not having a lot of good distance running recently and no training on pavement much less concrete.
19 Lean Horse 08/23/08 Hot Springs SD 27:28:56 100 mi 165 63/ 112   16/ 19 This was my first attempt at 100 miles and I feel like I had a good run. I did not do well at footcare and by mile 84 was practically crippled and it took me 7 hours to cover the last 16 miles. Had it not been for the blisters I could have finished much faster. I learned from my mistake and think I can do much better next time.
18 Vineman Triathlon 08/02/08 Windsor CA 5:24:22 Marathon 335 96/ 320   2/ 14 This was the hardest marathon course I have run and it was about 98 degrees at the beginning of the run. I worked hard to try and stay cool and ended up getting my shoes too wet so got some tender feet. Overall though I had a great race on a tough day.
17 El Scorcho 07/20/08 Ft. Worth TX 5:41:22 50 km 95 45/ 92 37/ 66   This was a new 50K PR for me and it was my first night race. I had a great time!
16 Ironman Coeur d"Alene 06/22/08 Coeur d'Alene ID 5:00:05 Marathon 1064 791/ 2061   169/ 332 My total time of 12:31:21 smashed my previous Ironman PR of 14:24 by almost two hours! I knew I had this race in me and I'm finally getting the distance figured out.
15 Ogden Marathon 05/17/08 Ogden UT 3:46:39 Marathon 2823 321/ 1534 253/ 879 6/ 81 New PR! Nice course for someone who is a decent downhill runner. Great support and good organization.
14 Bataan Death March Memorial 03/30/08 White Sands Missile Range NM 4:51:30 Marathon         I attempted this marathon only one week after my first 50 mile run. I did this on purpose in preparation for my 100 mile attempt in late August. I was running pretty well, a 4:15 marathon pace, until about mile 16 when I made the mistake of taking a gel and washing it down with Gatorade. My stomach became upset and I started having to limit my fluid and fuel intake, which really started hurting me later on.
13 Grasslands Ultra 03/22/08 Decatur TX 10:28:56 50 mi 50 25/ 50     First 50 miler! This was a good race for a first timer. I was hoping to go sub 10 but ended up getting lost once when a bunch of horse riders were blocking the main trail from my view and I headed off down wrong trail.
12 Black Warrior 50K 02/16/08 Moulton AL 6:42:22 50 km         My first trail race in the South. I went in sick with the flu or something but had a good time anyway just slower than i planned. Great race!
11 Ghost Town 38.5 01/20/08 Hillsboro NM 8:07:38 38.5 mi   15/ 47 12/ 32   Set a PR for this race but this was a different course, much harder. The original race was all road and mostly flat or rolling. The race is now mostly trail and rolling to climbing. Excellent race!
10 Mississippi Blues Marathon 01/05/08 Jackson MS 3:51:33 Marathon 72 100/ 458 86/ 309 17/ 41 Tough course, Garmin regstered just over 5660 feet of climbing. Set a new PR though and it was a great race.
9 New Las Vegas Marathon 12/02/07 Las Vegas NV 3:56:36 Marathon         My first sub-4 marathon and I ran it dressed as Elvis! I can't believe I ran a sub-4!
8 Silverman Iron Distance Triathlon 11/11/07 Henderson NV 5:55:00 Marathon         Supposed to be the "Most grueling iron distance triathlon in the world" I don't know about that but everyone agrees it is a tough triathlon. I am very happy with my performance given the course. I ran the marathon as best I could and for once didn't feel like nutrition was my limiter. I think on an easier course I could go sub-13 total time.
7 Ironman Louisville 08/26/07 Louisville KY 7:18:21 Marathon         Another Ironman death march. Nutrition problems and heat this time. I'll get the distance right one of these days.
6 Ironman Arizona 04/15/07 Tempe AZ 6:54:50 Marathon         High winds and stubornness lead to a blow-up on the bike. I didn't have anything left for the run so it turned into a death march.
5 P.F. Chang's Rock-n-Roll Arizona 01/15/07 Phoenix AZ 5:59:53 Marathon         My wife's first marathon so I ran it by her side the whole way.
4 RedMan Triathlon 09/23/06 Oklahoma City OK 5:53:09 Marathon         Not quite what I was looking for but I'll take it. This was my first iron distance race and I think I went too light on the nutrition because I really wore down at the end. When I ran I felt good and held a good pace but the longer the race went the less I was able to keep running.
3 Lost Dutchman Marathon 02/19/06 Apache Junction AZ 4:46:55 Marathon         Beat my Tucson time and felt pretty good the whole way. Nice course!
2 Ghost Town 38.5 01/15/06 Hillsborough NM 8:41:14 38.5 mi         My first ultra! I stuck to my paceing plan like clockwork and was amazed that I still felt good at mile 30. By mile 32 I was not doing so well and we headed uphill for 1000 feet of climbing into a strong headwind and I was pretty much reduced to walking the last 3 or 4 miles.
1 Tucson Marathon 12/04/05 Tucson AZ 4:50:55 Marathon         My first marathon! The course is almost all downhill. I ran the first 8 miles very fast and thought maybe I could run this fast in a downhill event. By mile 13 I realized the error of my ways and ended up walking about 3 of the last 4 miles but I had a great time anyway.
