Ate pre-race pasta with Chuck Struckness(doing 300th marathon), Martha Corazzini, and Michael Sortito. Started the race the next morning and ran 1st 10 miles with Friend, Dave Bell. Was able to run with Martha, Diane Bolton, Chuck, and many other maniacs. My time was best in last 3.5 years. Not sure how that happened. Main factors were probably weight loss and increased speed work in last 6 months. Or, it could have been my Hoka's.

It was his 4th marathon. Don't care as much for these huge races where you are always surrounded by people. Next marathon will be my 50th state in Honolulu.

I was able to meet up with other maniacs and 50-staters Dave Bell, Lois Berkowitz, Beth Davenport, Larry Macon, and Henry Rueden. They had a good post-race feed. There was no expo the day before. There were a few glitches for a first marathon but, overall, they did a good job.

Saw other maniacs, Steve & Paula Boone, Janet Burgess, and John Teyhan, to name a few. First part was a little rolling but not as bad later. Plenty of aid stations and great race tech shirt.
85	Hartford Marathon	10/11/08	Hartford	CT	4:46:11	Marathon	787				This was my best time since June, 07. I felt good most of the way. Saw fellow maniacs Dave Bell, Larry Macon, McGyver, Phil Min, Kathleen Jensen, and a few others. Plenty of aid stations and great finish line area. Wonderful food at the end. Hopefully, this race will be the beginning of getting my times back under 5:00(although I know I could be 5:30 next time). This is state #49 for me and plan to finish the 50 states in Honolulu in Dec., 08. We'll see what happens next week in Des Moines. My wife, Bev, ran the 5K and continues to pile up states that she has run a 5K in.
84	Air Force Marathon	09/20/08	Dayton	OH	5:18:10	Marathon	1992	1400/ 1765			Best time since Nov., 2007. Saw fellow maniacs Janet Burgess and Lois Berkowitz. Tons of water/aid stations. Well organized and great post-race food. The fly-over before the race started was cool. Kudos to the race committee because Dayton had been hit a few days prior with storms and power outages.
83	New Mexico Marathon	08/31/08	Albuquerque	NM	5:58:50	Marathon					I had a hard time with this marathon. The weather was good and the course was fine too. It is at altitude and that might have created a problem for me with my asthma (it's a good excuse anyway). Got to have dinner with and spend some time with fellow maniacs Dave Bell, Janet Burgess, Charles Sayles, and Beth Davenport. Met up with good friend, Dean Peterson, at the expo. I was able to finish with Dean. Some of the others struggled too so I didn't feel too bad about my performance. My wife and I are in Albuquerque area for 6 days so she has planned some side trips for us. My wife ran the 5K and continues her unofficial quest to do a 5K in every state. She has about 15 at this point.
82	Carrollton Charity Road Races	07/27/08	Carrollton	MI	5:27:57	Marathon					This was an interesting race too. Race director, Craig Douglas, puts on a great race and hospitality is wonderful. The course itself is not too exciting but the other tangibles make up for it. It is out and back 9 times. The good thing is that you get to see others a lot. A large group had dinner the night before at the Olive Garden. The group included: Dean Peterson, Don Kern, John "J Lo" Lopez, Francene (Don's fiancee), Chuck Engle, and other marathoners from KY, NC, and Canada. Also ran with a talked to Larry Macon during the race (he was doing his 60th marathon for 2008). He is a machine.
81	SEAFAIR Marathon	06/29/08	Bellevue	WA	5:31:10	Marathon					This was an interesting race. We were bussed from the finish in Bellevue to Seattle to start. We crossed the 520 bridge (2.5 miles across) at the start. 400 runners did not get to the starting line because of bus problems. They also ran out of medals and paper cups for the last 7-8 miles. The good news is that I was not one of them. Visited with fellow maniac, Janet Burgess, before and after the race. My wife and I had a great time seeing Seattle while we were out there.

Also met Dave McBean, a maniac from CO. Another cool thing that happened was that an ex-student of mine was going to meet us there (she now lives in Salt Lake City) and run the marathon. Her name is Amanda McCaffrey (was Amanda Mount). My wife and I had a great time visiting with her.

74	Cape Cod Marathon	10/28/07	Falmouth	MA	5:25:30	Marathon					2nd marathon of our East Coast swing. During the week, I had gone into a small running store while my wife was shopping. It was in Mystic, CT. The owner was John Kelley. Interesting guy. He had won the 1957 Boston Marathon and competed for the USA in the 1960 Olympics. He had coached Amby Burfoot. The best part of doing marathons all over the USA is the places you get to see and the people you meet.

I found out later that I have "adult onset asthma". Go figure. Alaska was beautiful. A bunch of maniacs were present ( Dave Bell, Kenneth Hart, Amy Murphy, Steve and Paula Boone, Don Kern, to name a few).

63	Ironman Wisconsin	09/10/06	Madison	WI	16:20:12	140.6 mi					This might be the hardest race I've done. My son, Curt, also did this Ironman and finished in about 13:19. The swim was the toughest part. I knew when I got to the marathon with at least 6 hours to finish that I could make it. My marathon time was about 5:43. It drizzled/rained all day (without end) and was about 53-57 degrees. I am so glad I did it but don't know if I'll do another one. With a bad rotator cuff, this will probably be one and done. Once again, very special because my son, Curt, was a part of this too. Actually, he's the one that talked me into this. I'm glad he did.
