Can't get much worse. When you get "the runs" while running, it sorta affects your attitude. Not a bad out-and-back gravel road that was level, so I was quite disappointed and mentally out of it. |

Nice out-and-back course next to a rail line and mostly shaded from the sun. 6am start helped beat the heat. Had I not caught a sub-4 runner at mile-24 and run with him, I might not have been able to sneak in under-4. |

A historic Ukrainian city that was flattened by the Germans during WW2, the race starts and finishes in the shadow of St. Sophia's, the city landmark. It didn't start until 9:10 am, and with temps already in the upper 60's, at finish it was 80 and I almost fainted and was surrounded by concerned non-English speaking medics! |

A well organized and run inaugural 20-miles outside Wash. DC in VA. A double loop course over roadways and paved curvy bike & walker paths through the woods. Its ups and downs make it a moderately challenging course for flat land runners. I strained my left hammy at mile-18 but managed to recover enough to notch my 3rd sub-4 BQ in a row. |

Nice inaugural. It's a double loop on a "hilly" (for FL anyway) course, so said all the FL runners, but not a real problem for a traveled runner. The real problem is heat & humidity: upper 60's at start and 95% humidity. Age group award was a coffee mug with event logo and 1st Place imprinted. |

Besides the tropical "sauna-like" conditions of 80 heat and 90 humidity that a 3am start couldn't mitigate, this was the worst overseas course I've run! It starts at the #1 tourist attraction - The Grand Palace, but at around mile-1 you leave the city and climb up onto an elevated highway for an out-and-back till you re-enter the city at mile-19. Terrible. At least it's daylight then and the remainder of the course has some nice sights.

KC got hit with 80mph winds this day, we had to run the double out-and-back course in only 25-30 winds, plus 66-70 temps. OUCH! This paved trail course had long climbs at both ends and battling the headwinds took more out of you than you could recover on the way back. A fast veteran friend said the winds added a minimum 15 minutes to better runners' times. Course also measured 26.8 even though I ran tangents on every section! No way it wasn't "long." Had to get off my horse and take a detour into the tall grass for a 5-minutes "the trots" break. UGH! |

An inaugural KY marathon. Finally, there's a run other than the two in Louisville! All experienced runners gave it two-thumbs up. A double loop course starting at the minor league baseball stadium. The first 6-miles are the hills through the West Ky Univ. campus, but it then goes flat for an out-and-back. Convenient parking, nice awards, hamburgers at the finish, etc. A sub-4 was "iffy" after the second climb, but I recovered enough on the flats to do it and get a 1st place. Congrats to MM friends, Diane Bolton, for getting the Grand Masters-Female award and Michelle Walker, the Masters and 2nd overall! |

Almost all Maniacs went for the flat Tri-Cities for their double. I opted for the "nothing but hills" and challenging Gorge run and it was plenty of both. Early on I thought a 4:45 was in the cards but I shocked myself with a 2:05 half. I then hooked up with a first-timer 22-year-old and managed to hang with her until mile-24. By then I was down to a 4:05 finish, but I had a couple more downhills that got me across in 4:01:07. Darn, almost a double sub-4! I amazed myself with a negative split though. So rare. |

Too bad I didn't have time to visit Dracula's castle home. Course was a downtown double loop with one short hill. That's good but starting at 9:30 with temps in the upper 60's and in the mid-70's by finish is no good for me. Ran the half in 2:00 but lost it in the last 5-miles. Wow! The 3-hr drive south of Anchorage is spectacular with snow capped mtns. and glistening rivers. This easy-to-get-to very small marathon is put on by the small town of Kenai. Course is mostly flat with some rolling hills in the second half. Weather was perfect,35-45, and I ran my 2nd fastest time of the year because, for a few miles, I ran with one of my 50sub4 Club idols, Debbie Cropper, a really speedy 50sub4 "finisher." |

Disappointing running time. Even though elev. was around 6,200ft and the last 23-miles was a gradual incline grade, I just didn't have it. It took almost 3-miles for my breathing to adapt and almost normalize, but I couldn't overcome the concrete legs and a sub-4 was gone by mile-13 with a 1:59. Felt bad that running partner, Al "50sub-4" McGowan couldn't pull it off either. Nice medal,age-group prize, and finish line food though. :) |

Net downhill course or mid to upper 70's temps, which "wins?" Temps, of course. Man-o-man, left hammie was OK, but by mile-5 I knew that a favorable downhill grade wouldn't help get a sub-4 finish. A 2:38 second-half time tells you I was walking more than running. |

A freezing windy start. I was hoping to fly the first 4 downhill miles and crack 3:40. Alas, I petered out with a 1:51 half and really pushed hard the last mile to get a 3:59. Ouch! At least I didn't miss my 1:20 pm flight home. |

Compared to Jackson, this was flat as a pancake, except for the hills from 18-20! I felt like I was running like the wind, but with no Garmin, the mile-15 clock (2:13) gave me a shock and rude awakening that a sub-4 was in jeopardy. Until then, it "felt" like a 3:45 run! Oh boy, I won the Old Geezer Award - 1st Place as SENIOR Grand Master! Ha! Very rewarding weekend with my first double sub-4 in more than a year. |

Ran a 2:10 first half, so I knew that I would be able to manage the pain, but not the sun. As I faded, my goal time went from 4:40 to 4:30 when I decided to pace Nangi and help him to a sub-4. I ran the last dozen or so laps with him and got my time down 5 minutes! Met soooo many wonderful people at this event, but I can't name them all. :(

Air travel time from Atlanta-Tokyo-Singapore-Malaysia was 21 hours! As I waited for the 5am start, my back was and feet were already wet. Did the first half in 2:25 and walked-jogged the entire second half in 3:02 for a new record PW by a whopping 37 minutes! I must have gotten severely dehydrated because my BP dropped and I fainted. Running "The Highest Road Marathon in America" is a must-do for everyone. It's probably a Top-5 most challenging because of the mostly 9,000+ altitude and steep ups and downs, but it's also a Top-5 most scenic with spectacular mountain views.
Too bad I made a wrong turn and ended up running 28.46 miles. My 26.2 GPS time was 4:58:00. |

After being totally sidelined for two weeks after Myrtle Beach with a back injury, I was released as a 4:00 pacer. I ran with my replacement for 10 miles before my back began to size up. By mile 15 I was passed by the 4:15 group and by mile 20 by the 4:30 group. However, in the final mile bib #1 came alongside (Dr. Tongel, original organizer of the marathon). He knew all about "Cowboy" and we crossed the finish line together with hands entwined and raised. What a thrill, honor, and glorious ending to what would have been a very disappointing ending to marathon #100! |
