Congratulations to the race organizers and it's many volunteers. Looks like they have taken this event to the next level :)

152 Fort Worth Marathon 11/11/12 Fort Worth TX 3:50:13 Marathon 252 48/ 320 41/ 185 1/ 9 Got lucky and won my AG at this one! Was on pace for a sub 3:40 finish until I got some bad leg cramps at mile 21. Weatherwise,It was a brutal day to run a marathon! It was already 72F at the start and the first half of the race was run into a 35 mph head wind! Also, during the event, a cold front came thru bringing rain showers and plunging temperatures. Still enjoyed the workout and catching up with some old friends at this event.
151 Tyler Rose Marathon 10/07/12 Tyler TX 3:46:05 Marathon 500 29/ 162 26/ 102 1/ 5 Marathon/Ultra #150 is now in the books! Winning my age group was just icing on the cake :) Boom!

Just happy to have survived this one :) Awesome volunteer support with plenty of aid stations! Runners were given 2 tech shirts, including a long sleeve finisher one! Lots of great snacks at the finish. This is really a well organized event. They really know how to treat their runners right :)
146 Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon 03/18/12 Seabrook TX 3:36:30 Marathon 140 11/ 204 10/ 138 1/ 16 A BQ and 1st AG award while completing "The Seabrook Lucky Trails Challenge" of running both a half marathon (1:37:50/1st AG) and marathon on the same weekend. Scored 3 finisher medals and 2 plaques along with a race hat, tech shirt and running socks :) I love this event! The runners get so much bang for their registration $$$. The RD is a really nice gentleman and all the volunteers are incredibly friendly and full of enthusiasm! Awesome post race party with sooooooo much food which included grilled chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers along with rice and bean soup, soft drinks, bottled water, beer, muscle milk, tacos, bean burritoes and ice cream bars! Boom!!! All the awards were 1st rate in quality with finisher medals that spin or have multiple hinges. I highly recommend this race!
145 Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon 03/04/12 New Orleans LA 3:26:05 Marathon 2197 270/ 3657 232/ 1955 4/ 4 Boston Qualifyer plus 10 for 2013! May get to go back to Boston for a possible 3rd consecutive year :) Hello, sub 3:30, it's great seeing you again! It's been a long road back, almost 2 years since the knee injury. What an awesome course, mostly flat and scraming fast! The weather was awesome on race morning, after the storms had past. If you run a smart and disciplined race here you have an opportunity to do something extraordinary. The streets were a little rough in some areas, but that's something you learn to fight thru. The aid stations were long and well manned. There were plenty of opportunities to pick up fluids and cold water to soak my racing cap. I used the tangents well today and ran negative splits all the way up to the half way mark and held on for dear life afterwards. The race expo was bigger than I had expected than from previous Rock n Roll events I had attended, but NOLA has been estasblished for awhile now, so that should not have been a big surprise. It was a challenge driving around and trying to park downtown, expecially in the French Quarters. If you can booked a downtown hotel close by, that would save a lot of time and stress. The start line and race expo are within walking distance of many of many downtown hotels. I ended up eating my pre race dinner with some friends at a small, Italian restraurant, called Slice which is apparently a local favorite. Great food at an awesome price! I strongly recommend :) The wave start went really well. I was in Corral #2 and our group made a clean break off the starting line. Porta pottie were not an issue today because I didn't have to go until after I finished :) There was plenty of food at the post race party, including chocolate milk (Yum) and 2 free small cans of Michelob Ultra! Runners were given a nice space blanket to keep them warm for the bus ride back to the start. The line went surprising fast boarding the shuttles. If you are looking for a fun race with a fast course, this race is for you!
144 Cowtown Marathon 02/26/12 Fort Worth TX 4:12:21 Marathon 299 447/ 1592 352/ 922 16/ 299 Mission Accomplished! Paced the 4:05 group to a 4:04:36 finish :) This was my 10th Cowtown Marathon and the first time as a pacer for this event. This race just keeps getting better each year. The finishline was much improved over last year and the runnners were awarded with a pair of sharp looking tech shirts. The move to the Will Rogers Center in Fort Worth was pure genius! Ample parking and a huge indoor facility where runners can gather before and after the race and be protected from the elements. The same building also houses the race expo. Splittig all the races into two separate days has really cut down any major traffic delays on marathon race day morning. It has been a real joy to watch this event grow and evolve over the past decade into one of the more outstanding races in this region. My hats off and congratulations to RD Heidi Swartz and the rest of her outstanding volunteers for a job well done! This event is a labor of love for them and is worth every penny of your hard earned registration fee!
143 Livestrong Austin Marathon 02/19/12 Austin TX 3:55:42 Marathon 4483 1028/ 3879 834/ 2452 19/ 120 10th Austin Marathon and 7th Marathons of Texas Challenge (Dallas White Rock/Chevron Houston/Livestrong Austin) is now in the books!
142 11th Annual Mercedes Marathon 02/12/12 Birmingham AL 4:21:49 Marathon 496 537/ 968 392/ 627 23/ 53 2nd marathon in the great state of Alabama! Plenty of great schwag handed out at this one including a fabulous long sleeve tech shirt, a sharp looking finisher's hat and an awesome finisher medal with a very cool looking Mercedes Benz emblem on it :) It was very cold morning on a challenging, double loop course with plenty of hills. I cratered big time at mile 18, after running a 100K last weekend, but managed to hang on and get the finish. Awesome volunteer support and the post race party really rocked with a live band, indoors, not far from the finish line. They also served up a wonderful post race meal that included barbegue sandwiches. Lots of Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics at the wonderful pre-race pasta dinner at Rocky's Pizza! I got to meet and made a lot of new frionds there! Special thanks to Mr. Phillip Lin for setting it up.Overall, a very solid event that I would highly recommend.
141 40th Annual Chveron Houston Marathon 01/15/12 Houston TX 4:28:19 Marathon 1712 4021/ 7675 2851/ 4856 354/ 601 10th Houston Marathon and Marathon/Ultra #140 is now in the books! I am now also, officially a Houston Marathon Veteran and automatically qualify for a guaranteed entry to future races there :) Lost warp drive at mile 2 due to a calf issue again, but still managed to stay in the game and get the finish. Magnificent racing weather this past weekend. Enjoyed watching a very exciting and riveting Olympic Trials. Houston did a fabulous and amazing job hosting both the mens and womens event for the very 1st time ever in the same city.
140 13th Annual Metal Saw Texas Marathon 01/01/12 Kingwood TX 3:49:47 Marathon 211 21/ 221 17/ 131 4/ 45 17th Career Double. Finally! My very 1st Texas Marathon :) What a awesome way to start off a brand new year! Tons of Marathon Maniacs and 50 States Club runners. This marathon is truly a real gem! Nestled in a quiet and scenic neighborhood of Kingwood, TX, runners enjoy a delightful little romp thru wooded parks and sparkling lakes. The atmosphere is very festive and runners were treated to pizza after the run. A huge finisher medal and a stuff toy pig with the number of your finish greets finishers of the race. RD Steve and Paula Boone are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and they definitely know how to put on a 1st rate event. This one sell out early, so make sure and register as soon as possible!
139 New Years Eve Marathon 12/31/11 Allen TX 3:54:02 Marathon 110 17/ 152 15/ 90 2/ 18 22nd ultra/marathon for 2012! What better way to close out the year than at a race directed by superstar RD Libby Jones in Allen, TX! Miss Libby and her volunteers did an awesome job putting on this inaugural marathon event. I loved the race site location at the new Celebration Park. There was plenty of parking and the runners had access to all the permanent bathroom there. Aid stations were well spaced and manned with plenty of friendly volunteers. Special thanks to the MM's who set up their own aid station and passed out water all morning. Very much appreciated :) It was also good seeing MM's Patrick Finney and Larry Macon who ran his record breaking 113th marathon for the year.
138 Atkinson Toyota BCS Marathon 12/11/11 College Station TX 3:44:38 Marathon 2452 74/ 404 54/ 233 8/ 24 This was a little gem of a marathon, especially for an inaugural event! RD Chris Field and his volunteers put on one stellar race event. It's always a real pleasure to take part of a race that is a labor of love for the RD. Packet pick up was a snap! Fabulous race schwag including a nice race tech shirt and hat, goody bag along with a dandy and rare double spinning finisher medal! The pre-race pasta party was at a local Olive Garden. Aid stations were manned by very enthusiastic volunteers. Plenty of porta potties for the marathoners and all the busy intersections were staffed by police officers and there were course monitors at all the tricky turns. They served delicious BBQ beef burgers at the post race party along with free beer. I really liked the course that had a nice mix of flat and slighty hilly sections. Overall a very stellar debute and a very nice new addition to the Texas racing scene.
137 Metro PCS Dallas White Rock Marathon 12/04/11 Dallas TX 5:19:00 Marathon 3375 3564/ 4544 2365/ 2819 227/ 272 10th consecutive Dallas White Rock Marathon and 17th career double! Nursed a sore left calf muscle the entire race on a very cold and rainy day. Kudos to the race organizers for a much improved start, more porta potties on the course than ever before and tons of great food at the post race party inside a very warm building at Fair Park. Also special thanks to all of the amazing race volunteers at the aid stations along the course who braved the very inclemental weather conditions and provided much appreciated support! Also congratulations to fellow MM, Sir Charles Clutter who completed his very 1st double today! You did it Amigo :)
136 Baton Rouge Beach Marathon 12/03/11 Baton Rouge LA 3:57:39 Marathon 222 86/ 301 63/ 197 8/ 25 1st sub 4 hour finish for the state of Louisiana! A very fast and flat course on a very cool morning with plenty of trees for shade with scenic views of a sparkling lake. Was on pace of a low 3:30's finished but suffered a slight calf muscle pull at mile 22. It was good seeing fellow MM's Kevin Brosi, Cowboy Jeff, Richard Carroll and my favorite Half Fanatic from Lousiana, Danette Duval before the start of the race. So Mike The Tiger, the official mascot of the LSU Tigers after the race. Baton Rouge was about a 7 hour drive from Dallas, TX making this a very challenging double for me.
135 Tulsa Williams Route 66 Marathon 11/20/11 Tulsa OK 3:45:39 Marathon 2826 208/ 1438 171/ 886 16/ 115 Marathon #100 not counting ultras and best finishihg time for Tulsa! It was great seeing so many Marathon Maniacs and 50 States runners this weekend, including the Prez Steven Yee, Christopher "Hollywood" Warren and Tony Phillippi along with Charles Clutter, Marcia Rignault, Alan Countryman and Steven "Thunder" Lee! Special thanks to the RD and volunteers for an awesome race and for braving the really cold weather. The special, custom made MM finisher medals were awesome along with the after race food that was served in the VIP MM Finisher Tent :) You guys rock!!
134 Fort Worth Marathon 11/13/11 Fort Worth TX 3:50:29 Marathon 168 37/ 217 31/ 133 3/ 3 16th career Ultra/Marathon double is now in the books!
133 Rockledge Rumble 11/12/11 Flower Mound TX 6:54:37 50 km 572 43/ 75 29/ 46 2/ 2 First race of a Weekend Double.
132 ING New York City 11/06/11 New York NY 3:44:49 Marathon 8758 9420/ 46536 7618/ 29699 847 State #26! One of the best marathons and certainly the largest I have ever been a part of. The hype is real, the crowd support was simply amazing! It was one like giant party block after block for most of the course, except for the large bridges. The marathon route itself was much more challenging than I thought it would be especially the last 10K into Manhattan. That being said, the high registration fee was well worth the price of admission. The RD and volunteers of the NYRR Club did an outstanding job putting on a 1st rate event on so many different levels. They don't cut corners anywhere in making this a 1st rate event all the way.
131 GMAA Green Mountain Marathon 10/15/11 Hero VT 3:47:12 Marathon 260 88/ 260 70/ 166 9/ 33 State #25, Completes 2nd New England Double! What a gem of little marathon this was. For only a $30 entry fee, you get a lot of bang for your entry fee dollars :) A fast and scenic course along country roads, located on one of the Lake Champaign Islands of Vermont. I highly recommend this race.
130 ING Hartford Marathon 10/15/11 Hartford CT 5:34:44 Marathon 1148 2062/ 2213 1275/ 1349 133/ 141 State #24, 1st of a weekend double. Enjoyed pacing the 5:30 group, my first marathon as a pacer! Great fast and scenic course, I would like to come back and do this one again for time :)
129 Tyler Rose Marathon 10/09/11 Tyler TX 3:44:38 Marathon 150 22/ 212 19/ 138 3/ 16 First fall marathon for 2011. Got lucky and won 3rd in my age group :) I liked the move of the start/finish to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. Tyler, TX is famous for it's roses :) Great finisher medal, long sleeve tech shirt and great food served at the post race party including your choice of a bake potatoe, pizzz or pasta, along with yogurt, bananas, etc. It's a tough and challenging course, but I enjoy using this race as a training run in order to get stronger. The second half of marathon winds thru some scenic neighborhoods and is much more shaded.
128 Run From The Ducks 8 Hour Ultra 09/24/11 Weatherford TX 8:00:00 42 mi 25 4 4   This was my 4th year in a row for this race and it was by far one of the best. I like using this run to help kick off my fall season of running ultras and marathons in the state of Texas. This year they improved the approximate one mile loop thru the very scenic Clarks Botanical Garden even more. Over 70 percent of the mostly crushed gravel course was now shaded. Also they relocated their outstanding aid station by the park's permanent bathrooms which was very clean and also air conditioned, a nice place to escape from the afternoon heat! The weather was really outstanding this year with low humidity. Overall I highly recommend this event! It was also good seeing fellow Marathon Maniac Ali Wheat out on the course and running strong. She placed in the Top 3 in the female division and won an award! Boom!! Way to go Miss Ali :)
127 El Scorcho Cinco 07/17/11 Fort Worth TX 5:24:47 50 km 102 33/ 123 29/ 29 6/ 6 5th Consecutive El Scorcho! Just glad to finish this one after having a bad stomach bug earlier in the week!
126 TATUR's Midnight Madness 50 Miler 07/01/11 Tulsa OK 10:26:25 51.5 mi 1084 32/ 151 21/ 103 6/ 22 Sixth career 50 Miler is now in the books and 1st 50 Miler in the great state of Oklahoma! The recorded high temperature in Tulsa, OK on July 1st was 101F!
125 Summer Soltice 6 Hour Run 06/17/11 Abilene TX 6:00:00 31 mi 25 4/ 4     1st Ultra in almost 8 months. Starting race temperature was a PR, 105 F at 9 p.m.! Still thought this was one of the best ultracentric events I have ever run. The Abilene Road Runner Club did a fablous job!
124 Boston Marathon 04/18/11 Boston MA 3:42:49 Marathon 6590 11310/ 11310 8184/ 8184 984/ 984 1st Boston Marathon & State #24 are now in the books :) Boom!!!
123 Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon 03/20/11 Seabrook TX 4:18:29 Marathon 817 75/ 268 54/ 176 10/ 33 Marathon #2 of a Weekend Double and 14th career Double!
122 Grasslands Trail Runs 03/19/11 Decatur TX 4:40:00 Marathon 265 30/ 83 24/ 50 2/ 5 Marathon #1 of a Weekend Double in Texas, first for 2011.
121 Little Rock Marathon 03/06/11 Little Rock TX 4:06:24 Marathon 943 527/ 1811 382/ 1077 35/ 116 A nice road trip up to Little Rock! What a huge group photo we took of all the Marathon Maniacs at this event. I was very impressed with the size and design of this year gigantic finisher medal. The temperatures dropped overnight and the high winds disappeared before the start of the race. So with mostly overcast skies, the runners were really treatd to some great weather for this year's marathon.
120 Cowtown Marathon 02/27/11 Ft. Worth TX 4:03:12 Marathon 1408 241/ 1232 198/ 820 17/ 85 Really enjoyed the new course along with new packet pickup location at the Will Rogers Convention Center. Much improved race expo. Also splitting up the races with only the marathon and half marathon on Sunday, resulted in much less traffic congestion on race morning and more available volunteers and resources for these events. It was a warm and windy day, but still managed to break 4 hours for the very 1st time since injuring my left knee last fall, thanks to the excellent pacing job, by my good friend, Mark Miller.
119 Austin Marathon 02/20/11 Ausitn TX 4:19:49 Marathon 1506 1585/ 4786 1179/ 2848 72/ 215 Fifth consecutive Marathon of Texas Challenge (Dallas/Houston/Austin) is now in the books! Awesome finisher medal this year and a really nice carry on bag for all entrants. Loved the new starting line, north of the state capital building. Good to see all the Marathon Maniacs at the start of the race at the group photo section, including Sir Charles Clutter, Ethan " Big E" Hopkins, Sherry Ricker and Super Dave Mari. Although enjoyed meeting up and running with my good friend from Louisiana, Danette Duval, who ran the half marathon event.
118 Chevron Houston Marathon 01/30/11 Houston TX 4:10:47 Marathon 1712 2116/ 6903 1570/ 4345 158/ 510 Ninth Consecutive Houston Marathon is now in the books! Only need one more to achieve Veteran Status for this marathon :)
117 Metro PCS Dallas White Rock Marathon 12/05/10 Dallas TX 5:20:49 Marathon 3398 3811/ 4586 2454/ 2813 239/ 284 9th Consecutive White Rock Marathon & 24th marathon/ultra for 2010. The good news is the injured left knee felt better than 2 weeks ago at the Tulsa Route 66 in Oklahoma, but I haven't been able to put in the long miles this past month and it showed today. Oh well, easy time to beat next year! I hope to come back strong at Houston next month and then Austin to successfully complete the Marathons of Texas Challenge again :) It was great seeing all the Maniacs before the race for a quick group photo by the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park. I have mixed feeling about the new start/finish at Fair Park. I hope the race organizers will consider moving it back to the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas again for next year.
116 Williams Tulsa Route 66 Marathon 11/21/10 Tulsa OK 4:45:34 Marathon 1163 786/ 1509 568/ 937 50/ 106 Ran this one on one good leg but still managed to finish and get that fabulous finisher medal. Sprained left knee never felt right from the start and was in pain for the entire race. Finally had to shut it down at mile 15 and power walk it in from there. At least this will be an easy time to beat next year! Also on the plus side, this was marathon/ultra #115 and #23 for this year. It was also good to see so many Marathon Maniacs and 50 State Club members today including Steve Boone, Kevin Brosi, Tim Taft and Angela Tortorice! Thank you very much for saying hello and your words of encouragement while I was struggling to cover the last 11 miles power walking. Very much appreciated! It was also good to finally meet Mr. Dave Mari in person :) Thank you very much for all your wonderful photos that you take!
115 Rocky Raccoon 50K Trail Run 11/06/10 Huntsville TX 6:13:30 50 km 60 48/ 83     Tripped and fell hard 3 times during this trail race, but fortunately landed on soft sand each time. It was a beautiful day for run, one of the best I had seen for this area; clear skies, sunny with cool temperatures and low humidity. I love running the trails here at Huntsville State Park! I was joined this time by follow Marathon Maniac, Steve "CountryMart" Grady. My knee was a little stiff, but loosen up nicely after the first couple of miles. For the 50K runners, it was pretty dark on the trails for about the first hour and 20 minutes, about an hour more than last year, due to daylight saving time being moved back, later in the year. Great finisher awards for the 2nd year in a row! This was part one of my version of the Goofy Challenge :) I ran the DRC Half Marathon, the following day in Dallas, TX. A real fun weekend of racing!
114 Palo Duro Trail Runs 10/16/10 Palo Duro Canyon State Park TX 11:45:00 50 mi 179       Finally conquered the 50 Mile event here after several disastrous attempts in this beautiful and majestic canyon just southeast of Amarillo, TX. The 4 X 12.5 mile loop course thru the canyon is deceptively hard, with many ups and downs that gradually grind away at your legs, and can make the 12 hour time limit a challenge to some. The bare rock of the canyon walls can also radiate the afternoon heat increasing the temperatures for the runners during the critical 3rd loop, which has a 4 p.m. cutoff. Managed to dig deep and pull out something special on the final loop, despite momentarily bonking and cramping at different points during that part of the run. Overall, a very satisfying day playing in the dirt! This is a fabulous destination trail run. I would highly recommend arriving early and staying a few days to enjoy this natural treasure. Wonderful places to camp in the canyon and the post race dinner is one of the best in the business!
113 Tyler Rose Marathon 10/10/10 Tyler TX 3:37:54 Marathon 269 30/ 252 28/ 145 2/ 18 Got lucky and placed 2nd in my age group! I love running marathons in their inaugural year :) The course was much hillier than I expected and combined with warm temperatures, made this a very challenging run. The 1st half of the marathon took the runners, west out of town, with the 2nd half winding thru the scenic town of Tyler, TX. The Rose Capital of the America! Uneven brick roads and rough city streets also added to the challenge during this part of the marathon. The finisher medal was 1st rate and that was the main reason why I chose to do this marathon. Finishers were also given a free rose plant to take home with them. Volunteers were all wonderful and friendly. I was very happy to get in a nice long hilly work out on this day :)
112 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon 10/03/10 Msp/St. Paul MN 3:38:44 Marathon 6035 1390/ 8212 1152/ 4818 87/ 433 BQ! First marathon run since a left knee injury back in early May :) I have been wanting to run this one for a long time and I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. The course was as adverstised being the most beautiful urban marathon in America and it certainly lived up to that billing, with a dramatic, downhill finish near the state capital building in downtown St. Paul. The course is fast and scenic, lined with trees bursting in all their fall glory; passing along many fabulous local lakes along the way. A very nice long sleeve tech shirt and a solid finisher medal were handed out to all the runners. The race was very well organized and local public transit makes downtown Minneapolis easily accesable from the airport. I highly recommend this race for runners looking for a strong alternative to the Chicago Marathon.
111 8-Hour Run From The Ducks Ultracentric 09/25/10 Mineral Wells TX 6:17:51 30.74 mi 622 20/ 40 15/ 26 3/ 5 Marathon/Ultra #110 is now in the books! After having so much sunny weather the past several years, this morning's heavy rain and lightning for the first 3 hours on race day was a real eye opener and totally unexpected. I got way too much mud, gravel and dirt inside both of my shoes and socks running thru all the flooded sections and muddy spots on the course! After about 6 hours and almost 30 miles, I was starting to get some blisters on both of my feet. (Not good Amigos!) Decided then to call it day and save the feet for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, next weekend, since I had received so much generous contributions and support for that trip on registration fees, airfare and the booking a hotel room. Still got in some, good long, training miles today and I was also very pleased with how well my left knee, that I twisted back in May of this year, held up running thru all those heavy muddy sections on the trails:) I enjoyed running the new longer course along with the chip timing and lap counting of the race, which was a fabulous new feature for this year's event! I also appreciated the great selection of snacks and beverages at the aid station. Congratulations to the race director, Mr. Tony Mathison and to all of his fabulus volunteers for putting on a quality event!
110 Pikes Peak Marathon 08/22/10 Manitou Springs CO 9:20:53 Marathon 365 644/ 689 486/ 515 64/ 70 State #22 is now in the books! This was a very tough way to get one done in Colorado, but looking back now, I am really that glad I did. I almost froze to death near the summit, several years ago, at this event and had to be helped back down off the mountain by the El Paso Search & Rescue Team. So it was very important for me to come back and take care of some unfinished business this year. I almost didn't make it to the starting line this time due to some knee issues and huge unexpected expenses during the 3 months prior to the race, so it was really wonderful and grand to finally get to see the summit after 3 heartbreaking failed attempts. The final 2 miles to the summmit were as tough as advertised! Nothing grows at the top because of the lack of oxygen at 14,115 feet! I saw runners around me turning white as a ghost because of the thin air. The left knee held up much better than expected during the 13.1 mile, cautious, descent off the mountain. It was a great day for a run. The weather was mostly sunny and the trails were in great condition. I would like to highly recommend this event. It is very well organized and the volunteers were all very helpful and enthusiastic. This race will test you both mentally and physically. I enjoyed the challenge and feel it has made me become both a better person and a stronger runner.
109 El Scorcho Cuatro 07/25/10 Ft. Worth TX 4:53:58 50 km 104 17/ 129 13/ 67 1/ 9 A brand new PR for the 50K distance! :)It was good seeing MM's Robert Lopez, Jeff Venable, Johnny Spriggs and Steve Grady at the race. This was my fourth El Scorcho and still my number one favorite ultra in Texas during the summertime. Great white Brooks race singlets this year along with some solid finisher awards. The race was run under a full moon with another sold out field.
108 Lincoln National Guard Marathon 05/02/10 Lincoln NE 3:16:02 Marathon 240 98/ 1154 93/ 730 5/ 62 Another brand new PR, just one week after doing the same thing at the Big Sur last weekend!!! This run was part of a fabulous 1600 mile road into the heart of the Midwest that included stops in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa & finally Nebraska. I was very impressed with this marathon, which I was told was the largest in the state of Nebraska. The Lincoln Track Club working together with the Lincoln National Guard, did a fabulous job organzing this event and utilizing the facilities located on the University of Nebraska campus. The finish line was set up inside the football stadium of the famed Cornhuskers, where runners were greeted by friends and families inside and had their finish televised on the stadium's giant outdoor screen. The course was fast and scenic with great local support. The friendly aid station volunteers were even handing out cups of gatoraid and water that had plastic lids and straws on them! Great post race refreshments. If you ever plan on doing a marathon in the state of Nebraska, I would highly recommend this one!
107 Big Sur International Marathon 04/25/10 Carmel CA 3:20:33 Marathon 3205 93/ 3448 85/ 1946 7/ 219 Another brand new PR on a very tough, but scenic course, with stunning views of the Pacific Coastline along winding and twisting California State Highway One just south of Carmel, CA. I had been wanting to do this marathon for a very long time and was thankful for such great weather on race morning, with cool temperatures and surprisingly light winds for the Big Sur region. The hype is real! This was indeed was one of the best destination marathons I have ever run. I will never forget the moment when I first heard the haunting tones of that famous Yamaha Grand Piano, as I crested and turned at the top of a steep climb and view the magnificent ocean waves crashing into the beach below and the jagged coastline as far as the eye could see.....
106 Big D Texas Marathon 04/11/10 Dallas TX 3:33:11 Marathon 170 41/ 598 37/ 342 6/ 29 About a 30 minute PR for the 2nd marathon of a Doubler and also the 2nd BQ for the weekend!!!
105 Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon 04/10/10 Groveton TX 3:27:16 Marathon 171 3/ 91 3/ 66 1/ 12 First marathon of a Doubler Weekend with a Top 3 finish and the 4th BQ in the past 4 months :)
104 A2A Marathon 03/28/10 Ardmore TX 3:24:22 Marathon 83 11/ 128 11/ 81 1/ 7 Another new PR of 3:24:22 and 3rd BQ time in the past 3 months!!! Also got a rare age group win as icing on the cake :) What a fabulous inaugural event! The race directors and volunteers did an outstanding job for a 1st time effort. I just loved this course, especially the final finishing lap inside Noble Stadium, an impressive local high school stadium, on the outskirts of Ardmore, OK. Highly recommend this marathon!
103 Bataan Death March Marathon 03/21/10 White Sands Missile Base NM 3:58:16 Marathon 8810 44/ 1501 36/ 945 5/ 5 It was honored to participate in 21st Bataan Death Marathon Marathon in the Civilian Light Division and shake hands with one of the few remaining surviving veterans at the start. Proud to add New Mexico, as state #20, by running this very tough and challenging course along side marching soldiers, under 4 hours, in a time of 3:57:48. Was so impressed by all those carrying heavy packs up the 6 mile long mountain and thru sections of deep sand! I enjoyed watching and hearing the bag pipers go by and leading all the runners and marchers out at the start. The event enjoyed another record turnout! Couldn't have asked for better weather. I suspect the long uphill, altitude and sand finally took it's toll during the 2nd half of the marathon. One of my favorite moments of this run was during a long downhill stretch of highway around mile 18 and watching, wave after wave of both soldiers and civilians marching up, toward me, going back up that hugh mountain with there monster size back packs :) This event is a must do! Highly recommended.
102 Post Oak Trail Run 02/28/10 Tulsa OK 8:37:43 50 km 410 45/ 55 33/ 38 5/ 7 Second race of a weekend double! First time to try an ultra event after doing a marathon the day before. This was an inaugural edition of this beautiful trail run located, just northwest of downtown Tulsa, OK. Got much more than I bargain for on this run. The course was much more hillier than expected with lots of rocks and small roots. Wet conditions earlier in the week also made some sections of the trail to be quite muddy. Got a great work out in though and some extra bonus miles after getting lost several times :) I was just happy to survive this one and escape with a finish! Easy time to beat next time :) Fabulous food at the post race party and a dandy finisher tech shirt was handed out. (To be continued........)
101 The Cowtown Marathon 02/27/10 Fort Worth TX 3:31:17 Marathon 808 96/ 1192 84/ 824 5/ 81 Marathon/Ultra #100 & a new PR!!! Also 2nd BQ time in the past two months :)
100 Austin Marathon 02/14/10 Austin TX 4:10:00 Marathon 2495 1255/ 3949 960/ 2388 57/ 202 This was the 2nd race of a double marathon weekend. The drive back to Austin from Surfside Beach wasn't too bad. I picked up my race packet on the way down on Friday, so I woundn't have to rush back. Did end up taking a short nap along the way. Began the trip around 1 p.m and finally got into Austin around 7 p.m.. :) My favorite Olive Garden was just packed with runners! Decided to order take out, but ended up waiting longer, over an hour, because they had some how lost my order. Still got a $10 gift card out of it and enjoyed visiting with other runners doing the marathon the next day. I then proceeded to go out to the parking lot and eat my pasta dinner by setting it out on the hood of my car at night! Lined up at the start of this one with only one good leg. Pulled the right calf muscle the day before, about half way thru the Surfside Beach Marathon. Took it easy the first 3 miles going up hill, hoping it would loosen up and avoid further injury. Felt better and then hit the really big hills between miles 10 & 13 and ended up power walking up those. Things were looking pretty grim at the halfway point with at 2:10! Was really hoping for around a 4 hour finish. Stopped for the 3rd time at a porta john far off the course and discovered, when I turned the corner, that this one had a big line too. I was disappointed, but decided to use the time to stretch and that really seemed to help. I made up my mind then to just skip the potty break and just try and finish strong on the much flatter 2nd half of the marathon course. I managed to pass over a 1000 runners and finish strong! The race organizers brought back the finish thru the Texas State Capital grounds from the 2006 "Freeze Scale" marathon. A great downhill and then a screaming fast finish down Congress Ave with some great crowds! Earned two finisher medals at the end. One for the marathon and the other at the Marathons of Texas booth for completing marathons at Dallas, Houston & Austin this racing season. Boom
99 Surfside Beach Marathon 02/13/10 Surfside Beach TX 3:59:47 Marathon 107 39/ 179 33/ 118 6/ 25 This was a real gem of a marathon! Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in the state of Texas. This was the first of a double marathon weekend road trip that covered over 1500 miles in 3 days from Dallas, with stops in Austin & Houston. Surfside Beach is about an hour drive south of Houston. It is home to the only marathon in the United States that is run entirely along the beach! Running alongside the ocean and hearing the surf and seagulls reminded me so much of the opening scene in the Oscar winning movie, "Chariots of Fire". Runners are allowed to drive their cars along the beach until they reach the start/finish line. A large tent is set up for packet pickup and for the fantastic post race party afterwards. A concession stand for smoothies is set up with a "Jimmy Buffet Tropical Island Theme" and giant barbecue pits are hauled in to cook the post race meals for the runners. You can tell, this event is a labor of love for it's RD and volunteers! I was so impressed by how much attention was paid to little details to make this small, intimate race such a joy to run. I could not wipe the grin off my face the entire time I was there :) Everything from the colorful personalized race bibs to the very unique, finisher dinner plates handed out made this marathon a real joy to be a part of. Runners were also given a fabulous tech shirt and a very colorful and wonderfully design finisher medals. The course was mostly a long out and back, after a short 5 mile loop in the opposite direction of the beach. The surface was very runnable, but required more effort to do so. Runners were advised to add on an additional 30 minutes to their usual expected finishing time for that reason. Surfside Beach is a very sleepy, ocean town with many beach houses along it shore line. A morning overcast help keep the temperatures cool for most of the race. The many aid stations were manned by friendly and helpful volunteers. This marathon is a must do! I will remember this special day along th
98 Rocky Raccoon 50 MileTrail Run 02/06/10 Huntsville TX 9:04:24 50 mi 642 39/ 247 31/ 174 5/ 38 A brand new PR today for a 50 Miler at marathon/ultra #97! Great weather for running an ultra, cool & sunny. I really enjoyed the new 50 mile course laid out by RD Joe Prusatus at Huntsville State Park. This is fast becoming one of my favorite places to run trails. I loved running thru the woods there, where the trees provide much welcome shade from the afternoon sun and shelter from the wind. All the aid stations were well stocked and manned by wonderful & helpful volunteers. My most favorite one was the Dam Road Aid Station were many of my trail running friends from the North Texas Trail Runners were helping out at. After finishing up my 50 miler and soaking my legs in the ice cold waters of a nearby lake, I had the honor and priviledge of working alongside these fabulous volunteers thru the night, helping out the 100 milers reach their goal of making it to the finish line. It was a very rewarding experience and I learn a lot watching these amazing ultra runners. I highly recommend volunteering and helping out at at trail run. It's a fabulous way to give something back to the sport! A dandy, heavy duty, race sweatshirt with a hoodie was handed out to all runners at packet pickup. I highly recommend this event and may come back next year to do the 100 miler there :)
97 Miracle Match Marathon 01/31/10 Waco TX 4:16:08 Marathon 114 59/ 168 46/ 106 9/ 24 The march toward 100 marathons/ultras continues with #96 in the books at the challenging, but fun, Miracle Match Marathon, promoted as the "Toughest Marathon In Texas" because of it's many punishing and difficult hills on it's course. Got in a good hard training run on tired legs after running a fast Texas Half Marathon the day before. Struggled to get loosen up the first half, but did surprisingly well, the 2nd half, where most of the bigger hills are and managed to finish the last 10K strong, passing a lot of tired runners in the process :) Boom!! A nice tune up for the Rocky Raccoon 50 mile trail run for next weekend. I really like what the new race director, Nancy Goodnignt has done for this event. She has worked really hard to improve the race and it really shows. Though the course is challenging, it is one of the more scenic ones in Texas. The Hilton is the official host hotel and it is conveniently located right across from the start/finish line area. They handed out some really dandy, powder blue wind shirts this year and I love the fact that they had both chocolate milk and beer at the finishline after the race. My two most favorite recovery drinks :) This marathon is fast becoming one of my favorites. I will definitely try and make it back again next year :)
96 Chevron Houston Marathon 01/17/10 Houston TX 3:33:16 Marathon 2313 676/ 6340 570/ 3940 67/ 475 Very 1st BQ and set a brand new PR today! This was my 8th Houston Marathon and still remains one of my favorite races of all. The race organizers and volunteers put on a solid, well run event each year. Could not have asked for much better weather to race this past Sunday. (To be continued......)
95 BankTrust First Light Marathon 01/10/10 Mobile AL 4:04:10 Marathon 2157 147/ 437 121/ 305 17/ 40 State #19 :) Second marathon of a Dixieland Double in the deep South. After defrosting and getting cleaned up, it was about a 5 hour afternoon drive from Jackson, MS to this next marathon in Mobile, AL, taking Interstate 55 south toward New Orleans and then onto Interstate 10, east the rest of the way. It was kind of neat to be able to tour all the gulf coast states, traveling thru Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in a matter of hours. Florida was not that much further, with Destin only another 100 miles away from Mobile. I debated traveling there also after the marathon in Alabama, but decided in the end, I was running short of time and would make that trip another time :) A late packet pick up time in Mobile, helped make the drive less stressful. They were offering a free spaghetti dinner that night but since I arrived a little late, I decided instead to go a local Olive Garden Restaurant, my #1 road favorite of choice before a marathon :) The weather in Mobile was a little warmer than Jackson, but not by much. At least it was sunny and the course was very scenic, traveling thru some really nice suburbs of Mobile. I slept well in my car the night before and felt rested at the start. Tired a bit after 7 miles and struggled a bit on a few hills, the first half of the marathon, but managed to run very strong the last 10K of the event :) The marathon course was mostly flat the first and last 10K but there were a few good size hills in the middle. I didn't mind that though. I just took some much needed walk breaks, going up them and saved energy to finish off the race strong! Runners were offered a free place to shower after the race at a local YMCA. I ended up stopping off at Jackson, MS for the night, again, on the way back home to Dallas, TX. Saw the movie "Avatar" there at a local Cinemark that evening. Overall, a very exciting and adventurous weekend covering over 1500 miles by car thru 3 states in 4 days :)
94 Mississippi Blues Marathon 01/09/10 Jackson MS 3:55:23 Marathon 123 136/ 558 112/ 360 11/ 57 State #18 :) First marathon of a Dixieland Double Weekend in the deep South. A well organized event with a lot of "good old" Southern hospitality! In addition to having some of the most friendliest and helpful volunteers ever, a wonderful goody bag was handed out that included a genuine metal harmonica with the event name "Mississippi Blues Marathon" engraved on it. In addition, the marathon finisher medal was shaped like a guitar, colored blue. Now how's that for some cool race schwag! A strong Canadien cold snap drove the starting temperature down to a wind chilled 7F and it was still only 20F at the finish! My water bottle was freezing up during the race and I never saw so many marathoners wearing heavy winter head gear at the start! Most of the bands were not able to set up because of the extreme cold and the damage it might do to their instruments. But most of the aid stations were still manned with dedicated and cheering volunteers. A tent was set up at the finish to help shelter the runners from the wind. There was plenty of great food at the end including pizza, hot chocolate milk, bananas, bagels, rice and beans and all the beer that you wanted! The course was challenging and all the hills and the cold finally took it's toll during the 2nd half of the marathon, but I still enjoyed my visit and first race, ever, in Jackson, MS!
93 Metro PCS Dallas White Rock Marathon 12/13/09 Dallas CA 3:49:23 Marathon 1602 839/ 4453 681/ 2855 54/ 260 Finally back in 3:40's, a great way to finish off the year 2009! All the hard training and dieting paid off in a strong race today. The weather was outstanding for running a marathon, with an overcast sky keeping the temperatures cool for most of the run. Such a contrast from last year's heat and wind! Was ahead of schedule on my training after 3 months so I decided to go for it and see how fast I could finish. Used my lightest racing flats for the first time since March at Little Rock. This was my 8th consecutive White Rock Marathon and it was my fastest ever! All the aid stations were well manned and there were plenty of portajohns along the course. They used corrals for the first time this year but the course really didn't start thinning out until after the half marathoners turned off just before mile 8. Still had enough room though to keep up with the 3:40 pace group until almost mile 18 when I had to stop and make a quick pit stop. A nice long sleeve tech shirt at the finish and a dandy looking finisher medal this year. Nice refreshments after the race including free beer! I like the fact that they have moved the refreshments to street level now so runners have the option of no longer having to walk up and down long flights of stairs inside the American Airline Center if they don't want to. Another strong race expo again this year and packet pick up was quick and well organized. There is nothing like running a marathon in your own hometown! Already looking forward to next year race :)
92 St. Jude Memphis Marathon 12/05/09 Memphis TN 3:52:45 Marathon 1082 614/ 2446 472/ 1453 33/ 139 Have returned home safely from a cold, frigid weekend in Memphis, TN, after a 7-hr drive today, that included rainy weather all the way thru Texas. Finished the St. Jude Marathon in 3:52:45 despite battling leg cramps the last 10K and numbness in my feet at the start caused by 27F morning chill. State #17 is now officially in the books :) It's been a long time since I have been that cold at a start of the race. I wore my regular Race Ready, black LD split-cut running shorts with just a wind brief underneath, but a lot of runners were going with running tights that morning. Just grit my teeth and took it like a man! Ran even splits most of the way and still felt strong the last 10K. The cold dry air may have been dehydrating me more than I thought. I will go back and start taking more Succeed! electrolyte caps, even in cooler weather at my next marathon, here in Dallas, next weekend :) I liked the course. It wasn't as hilly as I thought it might be. Aid stations were only 1 mile apart with plenty of porta johns, even early on with all the half marathoners. Great finish inside the Autozone Ballpark, home of the Memphis Redbirds, the AAA team for the St. Louis Cardinals, located in the heart of downtown Memphis, not far from Beale Street. The runners were rewarded at the end with a quality finisher medal and were served refreshments that included pizza, chocolate milk and a ice cold beer :) Yeah Baby!!!!! A great way to finish off a long hard run!
91 Williams Tulsa Route 66 Marathon 11/22/09 Tulsa OK 3:54:38 Marathon 1995 291/ 1222 224/ 754 26/ 75 At last, it's great to be back under a sub 4- hour finish for the very first time since this past February. This was my 3rd Tulsa Route 66 Marathon and I have always run well here. The race organizers and volunteers, once again, did an outstanding job and I really enjoyed the new full marathon course this year, especially with the flatter finish the last 13 miles. Wonderful and beautifully design race shirt and how about that fantastic finsher medal? Unique in design and of high quality, this handsome gem is one any marathoner would be a proud owner of to display and show off to all of his friends, co-workers and family relavites. The weather was picture perfect at the start and as a bonus, they served free beer at the finish, always a great way to end a nice, hard, long run! :) Marathon/Ultra #90 is now in the books.
90 Rockledge Rumble 11/14/09 Flower Mound TX 8:22:29 50 km 565       Had a tough day at the office today, but still managed to finish the 50K and live to fight another day. They say the trails were tougher, steeper and longer this year because they added on some newer sections of DORBA trails this time. They were in great shape though and very scenic. I enjoyed my run and got in a fabulous workout despite the weather getting warmer and humid later in the afternoon. Looking back, I should have ate more the night before because of the cleaner and leaner diet I am on right now. My weight is now down to 148.6 pounds. Looking forward to doing better at Tulsa next weekend :) After all, your only as good or bad as your last race :)
89 Orowheat Fort Worth Marathon 11/08/09 Ft. Worth TX 4:08:16 Marathon 93 54/ 121 41/ 83 6/ 16 Ninth Double in the books :) This was an ideal course to run the 2nd half of a weekend double, mostly flat, scenic and with an optional gravel trail running almost parallel to the primary hard surface course. In fact, I feel this marathon is much flatter than the Cowtown Marathon that takes place here in Ft. Worth in February. Though only in it's 3rd year, the event is steadily growing. RD Steve Looney has worked very hard promoting this race and I congratulate him on the continued steady improvements that are being made. Since I bonked a little the day before at Rocky Raccoon, I went out conservative with a 2:07, 1st half, but finished strong with a 2:01 back end. Overcast skies helped to keep the temps down. Adding a 20 mile event and staggering the start times help make the marathon course less lonely.
88 Rocky Raccoon 50K Trail Run 11/07/09 Huntsville TX 6:37:37 50 km 66       First of an back-to-back Ultra/Marathon Weekend. A very well organized, low key trail run at beautiful Huntsville State Park just south of Huntsville, TX. RD Paul Stone has put this quality event on for many years and it definitely showed how well run this event is. A solid and heavy marble award was handed out to all finishers of the 50K this time. Couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous sunny day to run through the lovely forests of the park. Got a great hill work out in on the gentle slopes of the course. I probably could have finished about 10 to 15 minutes faster, because I was finally, feeling really strong toward the end, after bonking a little on the first 15.5 loops, but I met a "Hottie" Dirt Diva trail runner doing the race and decided to slow down and visit with her the last 8 miles of the run :) Looks like I may have helped recruited another Marathon Maniac. Boom!!!!! Time to hit the sack and get ready for the marathon in Ft. Worth tomorrow morning :)
87 Bass Pro Shops Marathon 11/01/09 Springfield MO 4:05:04 Marathon 46 96/ 318 79/ 185 7/ 15 State#16 is now in the books! This little gem of a race was a small town marathon in the truest sense. All the race volunteers were all very friendly and helpful. I was very impressed with all the nice schwag that was handed out for a marathon this size including a nice long sleeve New Balance Tech Shirt for all runners and a dandy tech hat and finisher medal, shaped and engraved with a large mouth black bass on it :) The race organizers delivered a fast and scenic course that was very clearly marked and supported by well stocked aid stations. For a race this size, I was truly impressed by the finishline refreshments which included a hot meal, two free, ice cold beers and ice cream bars! A gospel trio dressed in western garb performed live and greeted finishers with entertaining tunes! Now how colorful is that? It was good seeing and chatting with fellow Marathon Maniac, Cowboy Jeff B after the race. Best of luck to him on his future races in Africa including one in Egypt! Go Marathon Maniacs!!!!
86 24 The Hard Way-6 Hour Road Run 10/24/09 Oklahoma City OK 5:58:36 34 mi 146 4/ 23 2/ 12   I would like to thank the race organizers and all the fabulous volunteers for the wonderful job they did putting on Oklahoma's 1st Ultrarunning Championships yesterday at inaugural 24 The Hard Way this weekend and congratulations to all runners who participated. Outstanding and generous race goody bags, impressive and handsome race awards, a first rate and well stocked aid station and some really nice course layouts for both road and off road runners. It was great day for running outdoors and was pleasantly surprised to be presented with the Male Masters Winner Award at the end of the race :) I highly recommend this run and hope that other runners will consider putting this event on their race calendar next fall.
85 Peak Performance Maine Marathon 10/04/09 Portland ME 4:34:03 Marathon 224 582/ 870 379/ 517 41/ 59 This was the 2nd half of the New England Double and my very first trip to Maine. State #15!! Woo Hoo!! All my life, I have always wanted to visit this state and the Maine Track Club did a fabulous job with this marathon. The New Hampshire and Maine Marathons is a popular double for both the Marathon Maniacs and the 50 States Club and both groups were out in full force on race day. It was almost a 2 hour drive from Bristol, NH to Portland, ME. Stopped off to eat and refuel in between marathons at a Wendy's in Epsom, NH. A big thunderstorm rolled thru Portland around midnight, but the rain stopped in time for the race and the cloud cover help keep the temperatures down. After totally getting soaked in New Hampshire the day before, I barely packed enough dry clothes to race this 2nd marathon. Was stiff and tight the first 8 miles but loosen up after that to finish strong and faster than the marathon the day before! (I am still scratching my head over that) They handed out a fabulous looking long sleeve tech shirt and a dandy finisher medal. A straight out and back course and not quite as hilly as the marathon in Bristol. Very high marks for this race.
84 New Hampshire Marathon 10/03/09 Bristol NH 4:42:09 Marathon 68 170/ 298 37/ 49 37/ 49 This was my first was my first visit to the New England area and I was not disappointed. For only a $40 entry fee, the hard working race organizers and friendly volunteers from this small, rustic community, nestled in the upper Memmerimac Valley of New Hampshire, put on a good, solid event. What it lacked in all the bells and whistles of much larger big city marathons of today was more than made up by the simplicity and charm of a small town marathon. The course that wound it's way around scenic Lake New Foundland was hillier than I expected but was rewarding for the spectacular color of fall that was on display by the countryside this time of year. On this day, the weather was wet and rainy, but judging by the faces of most of the runners, most of them were enjoying the experience of having the priviledge of sharing a special day of adventure and doing something we all come to know as the joy of running in a unique and wonderful location. This was the first half of a New England Double and State #14!
83 8-Hour Run From The Ducks 09/26/09 Mineral Wells TX 8:00:00 35 mi 48       Had a bad day at the office today, but at least this will be an easy mileage total to beat next year and got a much needed, long training run in. Never felt good from the start and the 93F afternoon temperatures did not help. Stopped and layed down several times inside a giant empty tent that was set up along side the course several times until I felt better again. Managed to finish strong and was glad to still be running at the end. A fun, low key and well organized event with some of the most friendly and encouraging race volunteers around. This was my 20th Ultra event to be completed :)
82 El Scorcho Tres 07/19/09 Ft. Worth TX 5:56:46 50 km 100 51/ 91 41/ 65   This was my 3rd El Scorcho. I thought the temperature felt the coolest out of the 3 times I had done this event even though the themometer still read around 85 degrees. The race directors again handed out some really sharp looking race singlets and a dandy finisher pin and medal for the 50K runners. Thanks to park improvements by the city, all the bad pot holes on one section of the course had all been repaired in time for the race this summer. Still a fun event and a fabulous way to get a long run in, during the middle of the summer in the Texas heat by starting this 50K at midnight :)
81 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon 04/26/09 Oklahoma City OK 4:37:31 Marathon 1845 1006/ 2405 718/ 1469 52/ 126 Was just happy to finish this one today. It was brutally windy and warm, especially during the 2nd half of the run. Also just finished directing a 5K run the day before so I did not log in as many training miles like I wanted the last 3 weeks. At least this will be an easy time to beat next time I do this event :)
80 Little Rock Marathon 03/15/09 Little Rock AR 3:59:97 Marathon 1684 349/ 1382 280/ 862 28/ 109 Was having a great run until I finished charging up that long hill in the Kavanaugh district along with a group of strong runners. Struggled some after that but still managed to put on a final charge at the end to finish sub 4 hours. Sweet! I used to live in Little Rock, so it was good catching up with some old church friends from many years ago.
79 Cowtown Marathon 02/28/09 Fort Worth TX 3:45:28 Marathon 1066 159/ 921 143/ 634 15/ 60 This was my 7th Cowtown Marathon and my fastest finshing time there ever. It was cold and very windy at the start this year. Ran strong until mile 19 but then had to slow due to leg cramps caused by the dehydrating effects of the wind. Enjoyed the sharp looking, long sleeve tech shirts, handed out once again, at this marathon at the finish. Would highly recommend this event to other runners.
78 Austin Marathon 02/15/09 Austin TX 3:49:03 Marathon 4564 875/ 4025 76/ 2442 41/ 198 Still a great destination marathon but the course is definitely more challenging and hillier than the old point to point one used back when Motorola was the title race sponsor. At least they still hand out a dandy looking finisher medal at the end.
77 Chevron Houston Marathon 01/18/09 Houston TX 3:42:02 Marathon 3141 808/ 5398 635/ 3504 70/ 479 This was my 7th Houston Marathon and a new PR! The first in nearly 2 years at the exact same marathon. This is still my favorite in the state of Texas. Lot's of wonderful memories here :) I marvel at how the race organizer consistenty put on a quality event each year. The race expo was once again outstanding along with the post race party. They really know who to feed hungry runners here after the race! Wonderful and friendly volunteers. High recommend this one.
76 NexBank Dallas White Rock Marathon 12/14/08 Dallas TX 3:52:02 Marathon 1358 676/ 3938 574/ 2441 43/ 219 A very tough day to run a marathon with temperatures in the high 70's and wind gusts up to 30 mph! Tried out some lighter marathon shoes for the very first time today and just love my new Spiras!
75 Sunmart Texas Trail Runs 12/06/08 Huntsville TX 10:05:41 50 mi 123 85/ 159 61/ 111 10/ 18 What great weather this year to run a 50 Miler and get a PR in that distance! Once again a great pre-race pasta dinner by the host Sheridan Hotel along with a very generous goody bag. Great course and wonderful aid stations. If you are wanting to do your very first trail run, looked no further!
74 San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon 11/16/08 San Antonio TX 4:01:28 Marathon 6227 1385/ 7526 1033/ 4015 86/ 4015 This was my 20th marathon/ultra for 2008 and my very first in the Rock'n'Roll series.San Antonio Rock N Roll was simply amazing! I'm so excited and happy for the city of San Antonio. They finally got it right after all these years and now they have a marathon they can be proud of. Running in the state of Texas has now become that much more better. I was quite impressed with how well run and organized the marathon was in it's first year under Elite Racing Management. With over 30,000 registered to run, San Antonio suddenly had the largest combine marathon and half marathon event in the state of Texas.
73 Fort Worth Marathon 11/09/08 Ft. Worth TX 4:07:54 Marathon 19 16/ 37 13/ 27 2/ 3 I love small marathons! This was the 2nd event of a double 50K/marathon weekend. Only in it's second year of existence, I was very impressed by the organization of this race from start to finish. They even offered chip timing and were very fast in posting final results. The marathon course, I thought, was much flatter than the Cowtown Marathon version that takes place in the month of February. It was also a long out and back course that followed the Trinity Trails all the way down to Benbrook, TX, beginning inside LaGraves Field in Ft. Worth where the minor league, Ft. Worth Cats baseball team plays. Runners actually get to run along the warning track of the ball field to start and finish the race.
72 Rockledge Rumble 11/08/08 Lake Grapevine TX 6:14:06 50 km 545 19/ 51 16/ 40   One of the best Rumble's ever. RD Tom Crull and his fabulous volunteers from the North Texas Trail Runners put on one great trail run. This race always hands out one of the best, quality long sleeve race shirts in the business, barr none. Wonderfully scenic and challenging course will give any trail runner there money's worth in fun and excitement. Fantastic finisher items awarded to all 50K participants at the end of their run.
71 Miracle Match Marathon 10/26/08 Waco TX 3:56:47 Marathon 167 27/ 131 26/ 92 1/ 10 A very tough and challenging marathon with plenty of hills, that winds its way thru some very scenic venues in this med-size town located, deep in the heart of Texas, midway between Dallas and Austin. I was very pleasantly surprised to earn my very 1st age group award at this marathon. I thought the 2nd half of the course had the more difficult hills, especially at Cameron Park between miles 21 thru 23. This is a very small marathon so don't expect a lot of crowd support, which was fine with me, because when the hills are killing you there were less spectators around to see you dying! :) I like the smaller marathons because there are usually no lines at the porta potties at the aid stations, during the race, because the runners are usually spread out so much. The race expo was very small with a handful of vendors. The runners did get two race shirts, including a tech short-sleeve for finishing.
70 Spirit Of Survival Marathon 10/05/08 Lawton OK 3:54:15 Marathon 2153 14/ 79 12/ 47 2/ 9 This was a little gem of a marathon that I would highly recommend. It is the only marathon the U.S. Goverment allows to have inside a national wildlife refuge and where you may actually encounter wild buffaloes crossing the course! The marathon thru the Wichita Mountains was challenging and hilly, but the scenery was absolutely pristine and gorgeous. Race organization was outstanding and the volunteers were extremely friendly and helpful. This marathon is only in it's 3rd year but the field had already doubled in size from last year thru postive word of mouth. I am elated that I chose this as my 70th marathon. I see a very bright future and continued rise in popularity for this event.
69 8-Hour Run From The Ducks 09/27/08 Mineral Wells TX 8:00:00 44.2 mi 12 5/ 22 4/ 9   It's always fun to try something different. This was my very first ultracentric event, an 8 hour run done on a 0.48 mile course of grass, crushed limestone and jeep road surface thru the Clark's Garden Botanical Park, near Mineral Wells, TX. At the start of the race, RD Tony Mathison, literally just marks off a starting line in the dirt, looks at his watch and yells go and the participants just run in endless loops around the garden and see just how many miles they can cover in 8 hours. The runners reverse course after about 4 hours and run the loop in the other direction. I know for some running in circles might seem boring but I really enjoyed the fact that you it was easy not to get lost, you hit the same aid station every 0.48 miles and you really get to know the other contestants. Over $2,000 was raised this year for the National Vietnam War Museum. I enjoyed participating in this event with fellow MM Claude Hicks and would highly recommend it to others.
68 Turkey And Taturs 50K Trail Run 09/14/08 Tulsa OK 7:44:49 50 km 48 37/ 41 30/ 34 12/ 16 If your looking for a tough, challenging course to train on for mountain races, this is the one to sign up for! This is one of the hilliest and most rugged events in this part of the country. Heavy rains from Hurricaine Ike, the night before, made the course even more difficult this year due to slippery rocks and muddy sections along this scenic course. For this reason, a number of 50K runners opted to run the 25K event instead. The course was well marked for the most part and the volunteers were all extremely helpful and friendly. There was also a great post race barbecue afterwards with some outstanding chilly that really hit the spot!
67 San Francisco Marathon 08/03/08 San Francisco CA 4:23:59 Marathon 6560 1203/ 4358 1019/ 2875 56/ 227 At last, my first marathon completed in my home state of California! Also thanks to my running compadres at my local running club, here in Texas, The Lake Grapevine Runners And Walkers and better eating habits, I lost 22 pounds and finally broke 4 hours again, for the first time, since the Eugene Marathon back in April, 2007. Saw plenty of MMs at this one! Race morning weather was a cool 55F with an overcast fog blocking out the sun for most of the race. It was a real treat getting to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. That was also probably the windiest portion of the marathon. Lots of short steep hills made this course a very challenging one. Not much crowd support, but the very scenic course, more than made up for it. This is a great destination marathon that has made some "great strides" in recent years. I wish the race organizers continued success in growing this up and coming event into hopefully one of the premier marathons in the country that the great City of San Francisco deserves to have in place.
66 El Scorcho Dos 50K Midnight Run 07/20/08 Ft. Worth TX 5:48:24 50 km 91       This was my 2nd El Scorcho finish and I thought this year's version was a lot warmer than the inaugural one last summer. Was better prepared for the heat this time by bringing plenty of ice, cold water sponges, cold drinks including gatoraid and bottled water, watermelon, grapes and fabulous volunteer help from my friends at the Lake Grapevine Runners And Walkers. This actually resulted in a better finishing time this summer than last year, so the additional planning really paid off this time. Not surprisingly there were plenty of crazy Marathon Maniacs on hand for this zany and wild event of running 31 miles all night, during the hottest time of the year in the great state of Texas! Due to the heat, I tried not to eat too much solid foods in order to avoid getting an upset stomach. The 50K course was 10 loops of about 3.1 miles each. Every lap I would stop a few minutes and slam down an ice cold 12 oz bottle of gatoraid, grab an ice water sponge and soak my racing cap in some ice cold water. I did bonk a little on the final lap, but fortunately, I was able to grab a couple of pretzels at the final aid station and that saved the nigth. If your looking for a challenge and a real novel event to run, El Scorcho is the one to sign up for!
65 Grandma's Marathon 06/21/08 Duluth MN 4:08:45 Marathon 5938 2153/ 6875 1674/ 4342 131 This was my first visit to great state of Minnesota and my 12th different state to run a marathon in. Grandma's was as good as advertised. The course was fast, mostly flat and very scenic and boasted some of the best aid stations in the business. As a bonus, they were even handing out ice and extra cold water sponges. The weather was nearly perfect today and what large, enthusiastic crowd support, especially during the last several miles, as the course winded it's way thru the city of Duluth. Drop bags handling was outstanding and I just loved the tall balloons that were used to convey to the runners where each milage marker was from a long distance away. Saw a number of Marathon Maniacs today. For runners who love to run marathons this is definitely a must do race. It was well organized, with plenty of great place to eat, drink and celebrate afterwards. A toast to the race organizers and fabulous volunteers that made this race possible and such a treat to run. Cheers! :)
64 Andy Payne Memorial Marathon 05/24/08 Oklahoma City OK 4:59:17 Marathon 67 50/ 79 38/ 57 8/ 12 A very hot, humid and windy day. Was looking for a long training run anyway close to home and with only a $35 entry fee, this event seemed to fit the bill. A lot of other Marathon Maniacs seem to agree, since there were so many there that day. Ran a solid 1:52 first half before crumbling to the heat. A very nice, small marathon that has 3 eight miles loops around Lake Overholser after a short out and back. The aid stations were small but adequate. The race starts and finishes at the Route 66 Park. Make sure and try and arrive early beforehand. The lack of road signs giving directions to the park can make finding your way there a bit of a challenge. It was nice chatting and visiting with MM's Jeff Venable, Claude Hicks, Alan Countryman and Mary Cameron.
63 The 10th Annual Flying Pig Marathon 05/04/08 Cincinatti OH 4:12:00 Marathon 3545 1754/ 4734 1319/ 2724 126/ 298 I just love annivesary runs! Ohio was my 11th state and my very first visit to Cincy. You can tell right away this race is a labor of love for it's army of volunteers. The Flying Pig was voted by Runner's World magazine as the best marketing theme for a race. There is no prize money offered so the organizers concentrate on the beginning marathons, showering them with all sorts of goodies. In the past few years when runners have watch entry fees soar and the number of special giveaways dwindle, the Flying Pig continues to excel in these areas with a very affordable entry fee and generous extras such as a logo gym bag and boxed up race poster to go along with a dandy tech shirt and finisher's medal. This is a must do destination marathon.
62 The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon 04/27/08 Oklahoma City OK 4:37:24 Marathon 1439 1149/ 1970 824/ 1233 71/ 107 This was my 4th OKC Marathon and by far the coolest temperature wise. Although it was windy, the rain stopped just in time for the start and overcast skies kept the temperatures cool for most of the race. A great day to try and PR, especially for the marathoners having a nice tail wind at their backs for the last half. Plenty of aid stations and great volunteers. The citizens of OKC really come out and support this event. A dandy finisher's medal and they served Carl Jr. Hamburgers at the finish. Sweet! :)
61 Big D Texas Marathon 04/06/08 Dallas TX 4:40:22 Marathon 390 255/ 501 202/ 322 16/ 31 This was my 4th Big D Marathon and by far the coolest race day weather for this much maligned marathon in it's short history. It's hilly course now doesn't seem so bad after running that monster of course at ING Georgia in Atlanta, last weekend. I like running this marathon primarily as a good, long hilly workout and because it's a local race that is close by and doesn't require much travel. Make especially sure and arrive early because of heavy traffic caused by ongoing road work near the start.
60 ING Georgia Marathon 03/30/08 Atlanta GA 5:05:01 Marathon 2555 1547/ 2132 1099/ 1408 143 Marathon/Ultra #60 is now in the books! :)This was my 10th state and my very first trip to Atlanta, GA. This was by far the hilliest marathon I have ever run, but I truly enjoyed the challenge and the course was very scenic winding thru neighborhood parks and quiet suburbs with it's streets lined with colorful dogwood trees in their springtime bloom. Except for some strong gusts of wind, the weather was nearly perfect for a marathon, with overcast skies and temperatures remaining steady at around 45F during the entire race. A very solid and well organized marathon.
59 Prickly Pear 50K Trail Run 03/15/08 San Antonio TX 7:48:48 50 km 543 51/ 54 39/ 40 8/ 8 Got off course in the dark, early, after only a couple of miles into the race. Ended up running a few extra bonus miles! :) Fell a couple times. Then suffered from the mild effects of heat exhaustion when temperatures reached a record high of 96F down in San Antonio, TX! Ended up staggering thru most of the last 5 miles because I was cramping, throwing up so much and couldn't keep any fluids down. I luv trail running! At least I finished and lived to fight another day. Easy time to beat next year!:) Congratulations to MM# 695, Gary Beaty for getting his triumphant finishing photo posted on the race web site, wearing his yellow Maniac singlet!
58 Little Rock Marathon 03/02/08 Little Rock AR 4:32:54 Marathon 1464 538/ 1074 416/ 715 47 I ran this marathon several years ago and I liked the changes they have made in the course since then, especially the new start/finish location down on River Park, not far from the President Clinton Library. This was my 3rd marathon in 3 weeks and I'm feeling my strength returning with each passing day. Saw tons of Maniacs at this race and had fun waving and shouting encouragement to them all on a long out and back section between miles 18 and 23.
57 Cowtown Marathon 02/23/08 Ft. Worth TX 5:00:09 Marathon 388 401/ 692 332/ 458 38 A nice, easy training run. Felt better than last week at Austin. Looking forward to continued improvement at Little Rock next weekend. Couldn't ask for nicer weather to run a marathon, especially for Cowtown. They handed out a really nice long-sleeve finisher's shirt commemorating the 30th anniversary of the event. Had the good fortune of running into a bunch of Marathon Maniacs today including, for the very first time MM#2, Christopher "Hollywood" Warren and MM#116, Lauri "The Kid" Fauerbach Adams!
56 AT&T Austin Marathon 02/17/08 Austin TX 5:22:49 Marathon 2988 3900 2494 219 Sixth Austin Marathon in a row. Also completes 3rd Consecutive "Marathons of Texas Challenge" of completing marathons in Dallas/Houston/Austin together in a 3 month period. Never could get going today, but at least this performance will be easy to beat next year. Met several new Marathon Maniacs today including Mr. Gary Beaty MM#695 and another MM from Toronto.
55 Chevron Houston Marathon 01/13/08 Houston TX 4:53:06 Marathon 3332 3837 2591 301 Had the flu the weekend before and never felt right during the entire run. Must have set a P.R. for the number of times for stopping to use a porta potty during a marathon! But still managed to finish, get in some training miles and escape without any further injuries. Couldn't have asked for a prettier day to be outdoors. I just love running this marathon. One of the best in the state of Texas!
54 Wellstone's Dallas White Rock Marathon 12/09/07 Dallas TX 4:42:15 Marathon 2195       Ran 37.5 miles at Sunmart in Huntsville, TX the day before with temperatures reaching a high of 81 degrees with stifling humidity. Then drove back to Dallas, TX that night and ran this one the very next morning in temperatures recorded in the high 40's with windy and wet conditions! This was my 7th straight White Rock Marathon and my 15th marathon/ultra for the year 2007
53 Tulsa World Route 66 Marathon 11/18/07 Tulsa OK 4:04:29 Marathon 1855 367/ 1058 270/ 664 29/ 96 This is fast becoming my favorite marathon to run. Just loved the new course layout. Most of the bigger hills have been taken out toward the end. Runners were treated to a nice long downhill starting at mile 25. A morning fog and overcast skies really helped to keep the temperatures cool. This completes my 2nd of 4 races in 9 days, but this time it was more challenging with a 50K/marathon double on back-to-back weekends in 4 different cities in 3 different states.
52 Louisiana Trail 50K 11/17/07 Shreveport LA 6:30:19 50 km 207     2/ 2 My first ultra and trail run in the great state of Louisiana! A very well organized race, with great aid stations and a gorgeous trail to run on thru the woods. Received for the very first time an age group award at an ultra trail race.
51 San Antonio Marathon 11/11/07 San Antonio TX 5:21:54 Marathon 818 871 618 59/ 68 Just ran a 50K trail run the day before. Hot and humid Texas weather for both races this weekend with starting temperature near 70F and with a high in the mid 80s made for some tough running! Was happy just of finish with no major injuries. Looking forward to next year when this marathon joins the Rock 'N' Roll Series.
50 Rockledge Rumble 11/10/07 Lake Grapevine TX 7:09:57 50 km 543 39/ 60     My 50th Marathon/Ultra! This is one of the best trail runs in North Texas. Very well supported and organized. Lots of fabulous goodies for the runners, including an outstanding long sleeve tech shirt and some wonderful "surprise" finishing items, especially for the 50K finishers.
49 Marine Corps Marathon 10/28/07 Washington DC 4:53:52 Marathon 190       A great destination marathon! Carried an American flag all 26.2 miles to honor our veterans of war. Legs were tired from running a 50 miler and a 50K at Palo Duro, the two weekends prior to MCM.
48 Heartland 50 Miler 10/13/07 Cassoday KS 11:03:34 50 mi         My 10th Ultra! Ran with a sore toe that I smashed against some furniture at home about a week before this run.
47 El Scorcho 50K Midnight Run 07/15/07 Ft. Worth TX 5:46:48 50.0 km         A very fun and unusual first time event run thru the night, during the hottest time of the year in Texas.
46 Eugene Marathon 04/29/07 Eugene OR 3:54:48 Marathon   576 420/ 835 36/ 84 Eugene was just spectacular! With it's majestic mountains, sparkling rivers and tall forrests nearby, a true running mecca worthy of it's title of "Tracktown U.S.A.. This one is a must do! Two big thumbs up!
45 Eisenhower Marathon 04/07/07 Abilene KS 4:14:17 Marathon   74/ 155 54/ 106 7 The coldest starting temperature, ever for any marathon I have done up to now. 17F with a wind chill of 10F! There was ice on the floor inside the porta johns and the power aid inside the cups were turning into an icy slush. Still a very nice small town marathon. Friendly volunteers and offers a very scenic, rural course that winds thru the countryside of KS.
44 The Big D Marathon 04/01/07 Dallas TX 4:09:29 Marathon   113/ 423 88/ 267 10/ 27 Never say never! The weather was less humid this year which helped, but it still got warm. Not a great course to try and PR on, but a good event to run if your looking for a good long, hilly training run. This is a no frills marathon. If you want more flash and glitz go run the big 3 at either Austin, Houston or the Wellstone White Rock Marathon at Dallas in December.
43 Cowtown Marathon 02/24/07 Ft. Worth TX 4:21:03 Marathon   264/ 599 204 26/ 54 One of the few marathons where you can pick up your packet on race morning. No problems with timing this year, thanks to Championship Chip Timing. Was feeling bad at mile 18. Stopped and used a credit card to refuel and rest at a Fina Gas Station/Convenience Store. Ice Cream Sandwich, 65 cents, Can of Coke, 1 dollar, fast 10K finish, Priceless!
42 The AT&T Austin Marathon 02/18/07 Austin TX 4:12:49 Marathon   1990 1479/ 2799 114/ 270 A new marathon course that now circles the city. Much more hillier and challenging than previous editions of this race. Did manage to nail down a strong last mile down Congress Ave. The finish was awesome and so was the dandy medal they handed out to the marathoners. Still a great destination marathon.
41 Chevron Houston Marathon 01/14/07 Houston TX 3:44:30 Marathon   906 749 117 The 35th Edition of this marathon was one of the best. The runners were allowed to keep their "special edition" timing chip.

28 Freescale Austin Marathon 02/19/06 Austin TX 3:46:46 Marathon   1232 982   The infamous "Freeze" Scale Marathon. Runners were slipping and sliding on ice covered bridges.
