"Cox" 05/02/10 Providence RI 5:31:00 Marathon 433 851/ 931 535/ 571 143/ 153 I paced a first time marathoner whom I didn't realize was keeping such a "short stride" until I saw the half split of 2:56:50 -(of which I have ran about 5 marathons as fast or faster)-which wasn't as disconcerting as the fact that I would be just under the 6:00 cut off by a hair-and that much beyond my extended hotel checkout time of 1 PM. So I picked up the pace. The course was a mix of rural and urban-urban at the start and finish in greater Providence-the rest in rural scenic suburbs along bays, inlets, and next to lakes and golf courses. The field was very spread out. There was no energy replacement fluid between miles 5 and 21-just water. Not sure if it was just for 5:30 runners and if earlier runners received electrolytes or not. Lesson learned. Run faster or carry a camel back. (50 and DC #40)
"Hard Corps" (USMC Special Operations Command) 04/17/10 Camp Pendleton CA 5:01:10 Marathon 1614 234/ 314   15/ 19 This is the 3rd directly affiliated USMC marathon I have completed including "the" Marine Corps Marathon Washington DC, and the USMC Morale Welfare and Recreation Marathon at Camp Lejune NC. The Marines, as usual, did an excellent job. Oversize t-pee mile markers with motivational slogans every mile-along with bananas, oranges, water, pretzels and so-on. (It was like having the 20 mile mark of the average marathon at every single mile.) The race "swag" included a tote bag, very nice medal with USMC emblem, hat, lip balm, a coin and more. Rolling paved hills -the "hard corps" implied pavement running, not particularly challenging. The Marines along the route were very motivational. The red short sleeve tech shirt is one I will be proud to wear. It seems like a strict 6:00 cut off was enforced. There were about 300 participants -well under the 4,000 announced cap. This well hidden gem stays under the radar-not even listed on marathon guide, I almost missed it. Not particularly scenic-takes place within the confines of the base. The MC at the 20 mile "do-loop" one turn was very inspired, as were the volunteers at the 4 mile mark, and generally all along the course.
"Inaugural" Eugene 04/29/07 Eugene OR 4:19:30 Marathon 176 861 576 81 Home town course, fun running with brother Tracy for from miles 11-15, even though he wasn't in shape to run it as an official first marathon-he ran back to the 11 mile mark and did 8 total that day.
"New" Las Vegas Marathon 12/10/06 Las Vegas NV 4:37:57 Marathon 2521 3109 2161 405 Preceeded by Las Vegas Hash House Harriers Red Dress Run Friday read: "carbo load",and World Record Santa Run attempt 5KM on Saturday. Ran for fun. Had a blast. Capped off over double my previous best years total of marathons with 21.
"OC" (Orange County) 01/06/08 Newport Beach to Irvine CA 5:08:30 Marathon 16507 657 497 86 Much cooler than last year. Pleasant overcast and 50s. Nice course. Thanks MM Charles Sayles for picking up my packet.
26 Miles of History 11/23/97 Philadelphia PA 3:29:58 Marathon 2321       Work farmed out to non-runners; the "packet stuffers" very nonplussed about being there. (50 and DC #9)
Athens 11/05/00 Athens, Greece   4:00:48 Marathon 67       Ran with Jeff Galloway pace group for last few miles, exchanged pleasantries w/him (Country #4)
Avenue of the Giants 05/01/11 Humboldt Redwoods State Park CA 4:37:00 Marathon 769 334/ 556   31/ 43 This was a fun destination location to take my family camping. I have now done both Six River Running Club Marathons including the Humboldt Redwoods in Oct 07 (Same course, ran in opposite directions.) Had a blast. Made a friend Ace "Ewedog" Ewing, MM 4130, in his 6th marathon in as many months whom I recruited into the Maniacs. We ran together from 13 through 20, got seperated and ran jointly from 23 to the finish. Nice dragonfly medal, shirt and patch (40th aniiversary event). Average course support, Boy Scouts handing out gatorade water and gel shots at 1 location. Very spartan finish line/post race recovery-cups of tap water and sliced bananas-if one could find any. Run this one for the destination: you'll be so enamored by the oldest trees in the world-up to 2000 years old-that's 25 generations---it makes running for 4 or 5 hours insignificant by comparison.
Bank of America 10/09/11 Chicago IL 6:02:00 Marathon   33063/ 33063   2328/ 2328 This will take some time. Probably need to insert a link to the story I wrote-this comment column is too limited on characters to encapsulate this experience. (50 and DC #41)
Berlin 10/01/89 Berlin, West Germany   2:55:46 Marathon 8449 1455   444 Last Berlin Marathon when country still divided. I recall running way too hard through the first 25 KM; pacing with and talking to a French runner. Kilometers 25-39 were tough as my per KM split slowed by 40 second-1 minute each, and I walked the majority of the final three. (I had tried to run a 2:40 pace.) I remember being shocked that I still broke 3:00 with the walking.
Big Sur International 04/30/06 Big Sur-Monterey CA 3:50:05 Marathon 4368 489 395 68 Best Organized, Most Scenic
Blazin' The Trail (Charlie Alewine) 01/29/11 Coto de Caza CA 5:35:20 Marathon         Arrived late but the RD permitted an official late start. Beautiful sunny day if a little warm. Ran the first half with a fellow maniac who also began a half-hour delayed.
Boston 04/20/92 Boston MA 3:15:02 Marathon 1655 2278 2151 1467 The dream-met Frank Shorter and late great Johhny Kelly, picture taken with them (50 and DC #2). As I did at 2 out of 3 Boston's, ran too hard the first 16/17 miles/crashed at Heartbreak Hill, and just survived to finish from there.
Boston 04/29/93 Boston MA 3:04:39 Marathon 690 896 856 631 Best Boston finish-temps approached 78 but I was well conditioned. Made headlines in the then "Team Running Store: NJ club newsletter for beating a club member who was actually a much faster runner on most days.
Boston 04/18/94 Boston MA 3:16:19 Marathon 703 2700 2549 1643 Death warmed over last 6 miles
Bundesbahn 10/22/89 Frankfurt, West Germany   3:31:00 Marathon 260       Ran/paced with a group of German friends on a whim-had missed a lot of training due to military field manuvers. Didn't run for a specific time; just ran to finish. The three friends and I got seperated around 25 KM and finished between 3:20 and 3:45.
Bundesbahn 10/20/91 Frankfurt, West Germany   3:02:00 Marathon 152 1035   297 A farewell to 4 year German tour, tried to break 3:00 but struggled in rainstorm last 6 miles
California International (25th Anniversary) 12/02/07 Sacramento CA 4:59:50 Marathon 1913 4045 2534 457 Complete the year with 19 marathons. Set a new personal record-the only year of my life in which I have completed at least one marathon distance race each calander month.
Camarillo Marathon 01/08/12 Camarillo CA 5:33:00 Marathon 208       Due to personal circumstances, it ended up being my only marathon of 2012. Fourteenth year in a row I have finished at least one during the (calendar) year. This marathon was very windy.
Cape Sable Island 07/27/97 Cape Sable NS 3:59:50 Marathon 306       Very Blue waters very green trees, very low key event
Capital City Marathon 05/19/02 Olympia WA 4:04:07 Marathon 437 207 157 27 A lot more rural than what I expected.
Capitol City 05/21/06 Olympia WA 3:42:51 Marathon 504 123 97 30 Great Silver Anniversary Edition-improvement in every aspect from last I ran in 2002. Excellent work by RD/sponsors.
Carlsbad Marathon 01/21/07 Carlsbad CA 4:11:00 Marathon 511 423 324 61 Met a lot of maniacs on course! Rolling terrain-convoluted with a lot of terrain crossed twice..I kept an 8:45 pace thru 20 miles before imploding and running 15 min miles. I did like the views of the pounding surf and the sea gulls.
Cellcom Green Bay 05/17/09 Green Bay WI 4:47:13 Marathon 1726 1318 162 863 Slightly faster than St Louis in April, by design. Didn't carry a camera or take pictures. Ran with the 4:30 pace group from 5 miles to 20, until the lack of training caught up with me. Beautiful spring in Green Bay-Sea Gulls along the Fox River, very green topgraphy in an urban setting. Supportive fans. A party at the end honored maniac Henry Reuden's 600th marathon. Friend Mel from Ripon WI, 9 time finisher of the event, hosted me for a great week end.(50 and DC #37)
Christmas 12/18/05 Millersylvania Park WA 4:16:00 Marathon 282 75 49   Not as bad when its only out and back once
City of Los Angeles Marathon 03/04/07 Los Angeles CA 4:32:06 Marathon 7545 3681 2941 472 Ran socially using both cell phone and camera stopping frequently to douse off under hoses when temps. approached 80. (Being a 3 time hot weather casualty, twice recently, I wasnt taking chances).
Cologne (Koln) Poleizi 04/23/89 Cologne, West Germany   2:56:14 Marathon       12/ 12 Ran with two German friends with old school pace charts (a piece of paper with splits taped to watch) -all met goal to break 3 hr mark. The friends had ran 2:40 (!!) in Hamburg the previous year...a feat I thought I could equal one day after I went sub 3:00, but never did nor will.
Country Music 04/26/08 Nashville TN 4:04:10 Marathon 100 1325 953 131 Actually had seven weeks to train for the marathon considering the planned 100th as the date fell in sequence. Training went well. Number permitted me front line position. Went by the digital clocks. First mile read 8:30 and I got off pace, failing to account for the 1 min. early start for elites. Went faster than planned in the early miles averaging 8:00 through 15 miles before imploding to 12:00 miles. One would think after 99 marathons I would know how to run an even pace. A bad calf cramp (charlie horse) at 20 miles actually forced me on the ground for about 4 min. while I worked with a course medic to message it out. The course itself was moderatly rolling throughout-not what I expected. Far and above the most scenic of all the Rock N Roll events. Saturated with awesome music and fans. A mix of somewhat rural and urban. In my view the best of the three R N R full marathons held until now. 50 and DC (#31) Rock N Roll Series 2008 (#2)
Crater Lake Rim Run 08/12/06 Crater Lake National Park OR 5:17:00 Marathon 1 92 68   Race Director comp'd entry because I had prepaid and missed previous years; Newspaper ran story
Death Valley Borax 12/02/06 Furnace Creek CA 4:56:00 Marathon 1098 123 93 11 Although it's all below sea level that doesnt mean flat. Rolling course. Very dry, salty air. Beautiful views of the Valley.
Death Valley Trail Marathon 12/04/10 Titus Canyon Death Valley CA 5:23:59 Marathon 134 190/ 243 150 29/ 31 Great to finally run through the Titus Canyon trail course-did the road marathon in 2006. Beautiful and scenic. Stopped, hiked the hills and took many pictures. Running past "Leadfield", the ghost town reminded me of the mining ghost town we ran by in Leadville, CO. Trivia: starts in NV and finishes in CA for 50 staters considering the addition of one or the other...
Diamond Valley Lake Challenge 02/07/10 Hemet CA 5:30:50 Marathon 1265 39 30 6 One of three marathons that I recall ariving late to. In this case I misestimated the travel time in a horrific storm, combined with a couple other snafoo's. Also ranks in the top four for torrential down pours (Frankfurt Germany 1990, Seattle WA 1998 and ST Louis MO 2009). The primary difference is that this was on an unimroved dirt road. Basically a pig pen all the way around the lake with lake effect wind and rain. At mile 17 a volunteer told me "they are calling it" and my mind raced.."my first DNF"..(but wait, that means I quit which wouldnt apply here-the race was quitting on me)..in any case the race wasn't called though the aid stations from miles 17 on were un-manned. There were pockets of sun, and miles 22 on were clear. It is a scenic course, and I enjoyed it despite the conditions.
Eisenhower 04/11/09 Abiline KS 5:04:45 Marathon 35 146 43 11 Great visiting the Eisenhower museum. Excellent well organized small marathon. Fun experience. (50 and DC (#35). State completed matches bib #! I think this was by design of race director; June who arranged to have a front page picture/profile of me placed in the local paper!
Elma St Pattys Day 03/23/03 Elma WA 4:40:00 Marathon 1753       Worst organized marathon I ever ran
Enviro Sports Napa Valley Wine Country Trail 10/29/11 Napa-Bothe State Park CA 5:19:19 Marathon   26/ 27 17 3/ 3 Drove up Friday from Southern California, arriving late afternoon. Stayed with friends in Napa-perfectly located a mere half hour from the (very late) 9 am marathon start time Saturday. The course consisted of three six mile loops and two four mile out and backs. Extremely hilly, rugged, rocky and included stream and tree cross- overs. By the last 6 mile loop, I was reduced to walking the steep inclines: concern mounted that the 6 hour cut off might become an issue. About 4 1/2 miles into the first loop a group of us were attacked and stung by yellow jackets. I was stung twice. Later, at the 6 mile aid check, I went to adjust my camel back and swap my long sleeve shirt, when an aid station voluneteer discovered two bees in the clothing. Thus two additional stings for a total of 4.(Eventually enough runners reported stings that by the third loop a sign pointed us to an alternate (paralell) route for the remaining 1.5 miles. Cotton shirt. The image a "bunch of grapes" and a green ribbon draped (generic) enviro sports marathon finisher medal. (The shirt is nicer than the cow skull Death Valley Cotton and the ugly orange and grey seagull Stinson Beach (cotton) tee.The marathon was contained within Napa Bothe state park-a remarkable picturesque locale (Events also included a 10 K and half marathon.) The two mile point turn around of the 4 mile out and back was at the "Grist Mill" a very rustic 1880s mill and operational water wheel. The grounds now serve as a museum. This is the 4th Enviro sport event I have completed including Death Valley Trail and Roads, and Stinson Beach. The only Enviro marathon courses left to complete (that aren't same venues) are Golden Gate Headlands and Big Sur Trail.
Extra Terrestrial Full Moon Midnight 08/26/07 Rachel NV 5:51:00 Marathon 23 37 23 8 Started with a full moon. After the moon went down (or the earth turned sufficiently, however you want to look at it)..one could see the millions of stars better. (OK you cant see "1 million" with the naked eye, but it seemed like it). By the time I finished it was "dusk", the sky was light orange and the stars couldnt be discenred. A very fun and unique experience. Reccomend for someone who doesnt want to run an ultra to experience night running. Runners carried glow nacklaces flashlights and head lamps; but the full moon was bright enough that the light(s) werent necessary other than to locate the bright green taped markers every mile. Keep in mind the aid stations are 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 miles apart. Calico Series Grand Slam Race (#2 of 5)
Eye Q Two Cities 11/07/10 Fresno-Clovis CA 4:45:45 Marathon 1522 304/ 744 304/ 444 46/ 62 "One century" and a "marathon" of marathons. Coincidentally ran a 4: "45" to celebrate my "45th" birthday~4 and a half decades and glad to still marathon regardless of how "slow" I do it. This marathon was ugly and urban-a few leaves changing color-but nothing exciting topographically compared to the day before. They sure made up for it in organization-more amenities than almost any marathon I can recall-a long sleeve tech shirt, hat, finishers sweater, breakfast and an ice cream sundae for desert concluding with a beer garden. Supportive and friendly fans on course, and many great Maniac buddies to pass the time and run with including friends and fellow MM's James and David. (7th double marathon(s) ie two or mor back to back days)
Fairbanks 09/18/99 Faribanks AK 4:20:54 Marathon 77       Be prepared for extremes both up and down, beautiful time of year (50 and DC #18)
First Place Sports 12/07/94 Jacksonville FL 2:57:53 Marathon   36/ 476   1/ 23 Ran through residential neighborhoods, now its in town Likely last ever sub 3 hour marathon. A strange race pace wise. Felt great from miles 1 through 5, lousy from miles 5 through 10, great from 15-20, and struggled the last 10 KM's. My good retired Army Natl. Guard friend (Jon Braasch's) home town marathon. We both ran while I was visiting on leave from the Army. The overall time was a reflection of the fitness level attained while running with the Jersey Shore Running Club. (50 and DC State #5)
Go! Saint Louis 04/19/09 Saint Louis MO 4:59:40 Marathon 1530 1424 140 993 Sub 5 hours despite being a sea-sponge in heavy rain for much of the race and stopping to take a lot of pictures. Loved passing the Arch (despite limted visibility)-also enjoyed forest park and the Budweiser Clysdales and Washington University among other course highlights. (50 and DC #36)
Governor's Cup 06/03/00 Helena MT 4:41:35 Marathon 180 153 117 40 Got calf cramps and almost fell 50M from finish, marked my (then) entrance to 50 states and DC Marathon Group (20th state)
Grandma's Marathon 06/17/06 Duluth MN 5:05:13 Marathon   5307 3486 613 Ran "socially" from beginning with camera, stopped, took photo's bought batteries, also preceeded by 2000 mile drive, calf cramps and heat dehydration... (50 and DC #28)
Hampden Sydney College 11/08/97 Hampden Sydney VA 3:13:23 Marathon 132     4 Innaugural event, done as part of race directors PHD study, now defunct (no known correlation!)
HarrisDirect 11/27/05 Seattle WA 4:13:50 Marathon 930 922 187 137 Very cold toward the end-huge course improvement compared to 98
Haulin' Aspen 08/13/06 Bend OR 5:48:00 Marathon 140 103 53 11 First "official" trail marathon. Second double. Extremely challenging race. Missed a turn and ran extra. No training for..
Hoover Dam 10/31/09 Boulder City/Lake Meade NV 5:03:23 Marathon 3 57 40 14 This is the 5th Calico Series Marathon I have completed, though I didn't run this one as part of a personal endeavor to complete another series. My cousin lives in nearby Boulder City so it was convenient. A scenic desert course overlooking Lake Meade. It passed over an old railroad bed (now a gravel footpath)-through rock blasted tunnels, and to the Hoover Dam overlook. Overall a fun marathon I am pleased to have ran.
Hoppin Easter Trail Marathon 04/24/11 Riverside (Sycamore Canyon Park) CA 5:18:00 Marathon   2/ 3 2/ 3   Since there were 6-8 runners in the half and we didn't have bib #s I wasn't sure I was in the lead until I knew I was going to loose it anyway. This is a very technical course with rocks, roots, tight turns and steep climbs-5,000 feet of verticle gain. I was in the lead of the 3 of us marathoners-well behind the half marathoners on the first three four mile loops. By the fourth loop when it was just marathoners, I was quickly overtaken by second place, where I finished "in the middle" of the "3 person pack". Hey, sometimes its a battle of attrition-how many marathoners want to do a tough low key trail run on Easter Sunday? I ran through the first 4 loops but was forced to walk the hills on the last two, having not paced myself evenly nor trained properly for the hills.
Humbolt Redwoods 10/21/07 Redcrest CA 5:05:40 Marathon 1585 151 89 10 This is enjoyable run next to the giant trees which provide shade and make it easy to forget one is running a marathon. Six miles of the out and back course that are ran in the "open" with no tree cover. I found this a bit surprising. One thought that occured: it would be fun to run right next to the trees on a trail race rather than peer at them from a paved road. I think I will try and run the Sequia Trail maarthon someday.
Inaugural Harvest Festival 10/24/10 Paso Robles CA 4:51:39 Marathon 178 73/ 102 55/ 92 18/ 20 Dark at the start. Overcast with a few light sprinkles. Mostly flat with a few very gradual inclines. Beautiful wine country vistas. Started and finished at a winery. I wine tasted the day before. Well organized for an inaugural. Low key event. Very homey feel. Youth volunteers worked the water stops every 2 miles. Doughnuts (?) bananas and oranges for recovery. Barbeque plates for sale, $10, along with a glass of wine, $5.
Indianapolis Monumental 11/05/11 Indianapolis IN 4:53:03 Marathon   2149/ 2149 1382/ 1382 203/ 203 This was a polar opposite experience as compared to Chicago, logisitical nightmare. Rented car and shared a room with fellow MM George Southgate. Employed/practiced my PR "training" by arranging a pasta dinner at the Olive Garden. (Ten Maniacs attended including Leslie Toops, who completed her 50th state!) Great scenic fall course-leaves turning beautiful gold and brown. Along river. Mix of urban rural. Wide World of Sports theme song with 2 miles 2 go-totally awesome. Nice medal. rock hard bagels. Great hot soup and crackers. Veterans monument in the city worth the extra day downtown. Excellent post race barbeque at Texas Roadhouse with friend and MM Bill McCarty. 50& DC State #42
International City Bank 10/15/06 Long Beach CA 3:59:02 Marathon 851 415 329 68 Nice view of Queen Mary, and Water Cannon Salute from Harbor
Kauai 09/06/09 Poipu HI 5:43:06 Marathon 182 313   30 An extremely hilly paved course. Very green. It rained hard and parts were quite windy. The first "flush" porta-johns I have ever used. A lot of pre marathon breakfast food-coffee, bagels, fruits and pasteurized orange juice. (Too bad I had already eaten cereal and was full.) Traditional Hawaiian garbed grass skirted torch runner kicked off the start. Other Hawaiian dancers entertained throughout. Very happy considering I hadn't ran in months. A somewhat small expo. Race shirt has a ton of advertising on back and a super small logo on front. Fruit, yogurt and beer at the finish. (50 and DC #38)
Key City Bank 05/24/98 Burlington VT 3:29:30 Marathon 1386       Very scenic. Well organized. (50 and DC #14)
Lake Tahoe Marathon (Triple Day 3) 09/29/07 Tahoe City CA 6:06:14 Marathon 628 376 223 32 Snow and black ice. Walked considerably to ensure a finish-didnt want a DNF after the other 2 completed days. Felt great-like a bloodhound on scent when I hit 25 miles. (If I had timed it), probably under a 7:30 pace for the last 1.2.
Leadville Trail Marath 07/07/07 Leadville CO 6:50:05 Marathon 388 232 165 52 An excellent selection for a Colorado marathon. Extremely challenging and memorable. It climbed to from 10,000 to 13,400 feet to the top of Mosquito pass- (which we only climbed once.) However, marathon participants climb another mountain (from 10,000 to 11,400 feet, twice.) As challenging at it was scenic. Included passing an a ghist town. If you run here be prepared for both weather extremes. (It hailed at the finish, but it was warm earlier on)..The race hosts a complimentary post event meal and awards finishers mugs in addition to the medal. 50&DC #29
Leavenworth Octoberfest 10/01/05 Leavenworth WA 4:12:35 Marathon 112 40 33 6 Well organized innaugural
Little Rock 03/07/10 Little Rock AR 5:11:00 Marathon 1535 1047 721 114 Well organized event. Touted as "worlds largest finishers medal" at nearly 1 1/2 pounds. Interesting and varied course with pleanty of fans in intermitant pockets. A variety of musical entertainment, unique architecture (greek columned churches), the Clinton library, the Capital Building, Arkansas River-great mix of rural and urban scenery was viewed from paved roads. Excellent cost share host (Peabody) hotel with fellow Maniac Morgan and 50 stater Bob where the expo was held and the 50 state club reunion was. Somehow missed the "Duggars" from 19 Kids and counting who were supposedly on course, and the worlds largest pedestrian bridge. (Ironically the other day I saw an episode with all their kids crossing it.) (50 and DC #39)
Los Angeles 03/03/96 Los Angeles CA 4:45:02 Marathon 14284 7287   1118 Returned from 1 year in Korea; decision made at dinner with Uncle Bob Hildebrandt to go for 50 States (50 and DC State #6)
Los Angeles Marathon 03/20/11 LA CA 6:37:59 Marathon 3937 16717/ 19626 10614/ 11896 1155 Despite the conditions (explained later), this is close to the single-most fun I ever had at a marathon event. The first in which I have finished beyond the stated official race cut-off time. I got a special military veteran wrist band and corral A letter. I haven't been in a lead corral in a major marathon in 15 years. While there, I met and talked to actor Edward James Olmos and got a picture of LA Mayor Villaragosa. At the staging area in Dodger Stadium, the veteran wrist band allowed me onto the third floor club house area and private restrooms, which was a blessing considering the longer lines below. Took pictures of the hall-of fame(ers) displayed and watched elites warm-up. No time for the USO veteran bagel coffee lounge unfortunately: needed to rush back downstairs for our group Maniac photo and onto Corral "A" which closed at 7am. The 15 minute delayed start put the kabash on the live KTLA interview I was supposed to be the subject of. When I called the reporter at mile 13, she stated that the delayed start placed them behind me and they would scrap it (despite a lot of coordination and e-mail, oh well!) The first 13 or 14 miles I was pretty wired because of the potential interview. At the mile 15 I saw a downed mile marker due to high winds. The rain was incessant, miserable, brutal, driving. A couple times I just stared down at the pavement and let the rain run off my hat bill instead of looking ahead. At 17, calf cramps almost did me in. Bananas and muscle spray saved the day. Took a lot of pictures. Got severely delayed at the porta-johns- runners had taken to using them for shelters. Fans, absoultely amazing. Free hot coffee. Entertainers braved the elements. Who says LA isn't a friendly city? At the end it was a death march to the family reunion area for bags:unsecured, with personal effects strewn all over truck floors.A good Samaritan runner and wife gave me a ride back to my car from there.
Los Angeles Marathon 25th Anniversary 03/21/10 Los Angeles CA 6:09:28 Marathon 26058 14950 9704 1262 Despite the major snafoos with the traffic, I enjoyed the marathon. (I was on a bus that got caught in traffic because the RDs made the mistake of allowing family and friends to drop off at Dodger Stadium which inveriably caused herculean delays and forestalled the start.) It was a neat change to run through Beverly Hills, where we were serenaded with classic violin. Also memorable were the colorfully outfitted Mexican girls and boys who danced to La Cucaracha being played by the Mexican stringed and brass insturment band, all of the interesting costumed runner ("ped ex. who ran as a mini ped ex van), the bunny (how do you run in a fur costume in 60 degree weather?), the light bulb guy-who had bulbs protruding from everywhere and Lucky Strike (who ran as a bowling pin but appeared to have given up already by two miles).. The finish at Santa Monica was fun though it was too grey and hazy to see much of the shoreline.)
Lovell Canyon ("Labor of Love") 04/10/10 Las Vegas (region) NV 5:54:13 Marathon 378 44/ 52 28/ 32 10/ 10 I have now completed all 5 Calico Series Marathons in NV (starting with 2007 Run W/the Devil). I had promised the RD Joyce in 2008 that I would return to NV for this event (since that year it coincided with my 100th in Nashville TN)-thus I finally made good on my promise. It was a draw between this marathon and Muir Woods Trail, same date, which I hope to run some day. Lovell Canyon is an extremely hilly course. It was also very windy - likely commmon for this time of year in the desert canyon. It never quite warmed up enough to remove my long sleeve tech shirt. I was still coming off a cold with a lot of congestion-only the degongestant capsules got me through. There were many ultra marathoners in the mixed race field and for once the "marathoners" rather than the 10KM, relay and 1/2 marathoners were the minority field. The ultra runners were amazing-folks running twice (50 miler) or 4 times (100 miler) as far as me were already 10 miles ahead of me when I finished the marathon!! The course is very scenic-desert tundra and layers of geologic history on the canyon walls. Reminiscent of the Yakma River Canyon Marathon in WA (without the river). Perspective marathoners would do well to consider this event. There is so much scenic desert beauty less than 20 miles from Las Vegas and much of it can be observed in the Calico Racing events.
Malibu International Marathon 11/14/10 Malibu CA 5:05:38 Marathon 214 346/ 481 207   The marathon set a "standard" and then failed to enforce it. The website maintained "you are require to attend the expo." and no day of race packet pick up was allowed. I identified an entrant just ahead of me in line that picked up packets for 3 other half (or) marathon runners. And I am guessing (she) was local. In my case I needed to make two 238 mile round trips instead of one because of the message on the website. To top it off, it wasn't an expo per sai- There were only a few pop up tents and vendors-and a race shirt available to purchase for $25. As to the course-suprisingly rural farm-land in the first 13 miles and sections of strong tail wind. Hilly toward the end, and must have been approaching 80 degrees. Nice finishers towel and medal. Beautiful sweeping views of the ocean and shoreline. Fun to run once. Next year I will probably run Catalina Eco, historically the day before.
Marathon De Mayo 05/07/06 Reno NV 3:38:03 Marathon 4231 17 14 4 Pit Bull Lunge at mile 23
Marathon De Mayo II 05/06/07 Reno NV 4:40:28 Marathon 1179 145 98 14 Never again. This year it started an hour "late"; last year I belive it was just a half hour (?) In any case, the race manager didn't deliver as he told me he would. (I told him how botched up the first year was when I saw him at the Las Vegas expo. in December.)
Mardi Gras Marathon 02/01/09 New Orleans LA 5:35:00 Marathon 667 1339 864 121 Room shared with fellow maniac and 50 stater, Mel Martin. A great time in the Big Easy. Jazz music on Burboun street, night clubs, etc. Went to the National WW II museum. Thinking about the damage from the hurricanes caused me to get choked up a bit on course as I looked at some of the abandoned structures. Passed the Super Dome twice. Free beer and gumbo at the finish. I was too slow to get a sub sandwhich this day. (50 and DC (#34)
McMarathon 04/27/97 Sandy Hook NJ 3:27:08 Marathon 3 102     Friend Art Castallano Race Director 10 years now
Memorial Marathon 04/27/08 Oklahoma City OK 6:14:26 Marathon 714 1835 1183 160 A very cold windy, blustry day, atypical for this marathon. I was so sore from the previous day I wasn't able to run fast enough to generate sufficient body heat to stay warm. Excellent well organized marathon. Provided an entry shirt "and" finishers shirt. Supportive friendly fans, tons of food at the end. The event is also held for a great cause. 50 and DC (#32)
Mississippi Blues Marathon 01/03/09 Jackson MS 5:51:50 Marathon 570 396 37 267 Enjoyed socializing with many Marathon Maniacs and 50 State Club members. It was a 1,900 mile drive (2 1/2) days for the family (fortunatly gas prices have dropped). Hadn't ran "in months," so I was happy just to finish. Loved the blues theme and music, though the course was more urban than what I expected, southern hospitality and pine trees will not soon be forgotten. 50 and DC (#33)
Mount Rushmore Marathon 10/09/05 Rapid City SD 4:14:27 Marathon 100 49 40 4/ 40 Be prepared for 26 miles of rolling hills (50 and DC #26)
Mytle Beach 02/28/98 Myrtle Beach SC 3:33:31 Marathon         Innaugural event. Near flash flood at start. (50 and DC #12)
Napa Valley Marathon 03/05/06 Napa CA 3:41:25 Marathon 702 268 221 53 Wine country; beautifully scenic-breakout run in the rain..picked it up toward the end as I felt better. Hot soup at the finish. One of the first times I have broken my "protocol"-wore the race's shirt during the race -because fo the cold/rain. Turned out to be a good omen.
New York City 11/01/92 New York City NY 2:56:00 Marathon   922 894 227 Batman in full costume zig zagged back and forth in front of me soliciting the crowds for cheers. Leaving me in the dust at 15 miles, he probably finished in less than 2:50. One of my few negative split fast marathons: 1:28:10 first half, 1:27:50 second half. (50 and DC #3)
New York City 11/05/94 New York City NY 3:00:05 Marathon 1510 789/ 29628 756/ 22687 191/ 3107 (Pre chip timing!)Less than 3 hours; 1 minute to cross start
Newport 06/01/02 Newport OR 3:43:00 Marathon 648 172 128   Awesome medal, shirt, chowder and beer, boring course
NorCal Marathon 09/18/11 San Jose CA 5:20:00 Marathon 169   194 40 The host San Jose Garden Airport Hotel (host) was an awesome location to take the family: a giant pool and a nice hot-tub and only 4 miles from the race start location. The expo was very small and basic. I got a 10% off coupon for the "Sports Basement" - investigating it was a good choice -one of the biggest multi-sporting athletic equipment stores I have ever been in. The race shirt is excellent, blue and yellow, technical: nice logo on the front and back, and zero outside advertising. (I did feel a little pressure-it was issued at packet pick up yet the back states "finisher.") The course, (a gap-filler for the now defunct Silicone Valley which took place on the nearby Los Gatos Trail)--was also on foot paths past estuaries and parks (and not particularly scenic)-but it kept us off streets and was well marked. (Although the distinction at the half turn around wa simply a volunteer shouting half and full turn commands, I noted two women half marathon participants coming toward me that had apparently overshot the turn around--) Interesting configuration. Half marathoners turned at the 6.55 on the out and back, while full marathoners did a variation of a half marathon out, though about 3 miles on the "back" section was non-repeated section. I appreciated that both the t-shirt and medal awarded were different for the half and full. The medal is one of my only California marathon finisher awards that displays the geographic outline of the state. The finish line amenities included a tall ice cold 24 once hand towl wrapped bottle of ice water, a bottle of wine and all you could eat giant stuffed burritos. For me, I didn't run as evenly as I had hoped and got very hot especially the last 8 miles. The only negative aspect to this race were several sections that couldnt be accessed to place aid stations-thus 3 miles apart. Including a victim at 22, 24 and the finish line, I noted three presumed hot weather casualties with EMS on strechers. It was in the low 80s by noon.
Northern Central Trail 11/29/97 Sparks MD 3:22:00 Marathon 130 74     Looking for a PR?Flat fast, bark trail. (50 and DC #10)
Oakland Running Festival "Inaugural" 03/29/10 Oakland CA 5:20:43 Marathon 1634 771 527 96 Thanks kindly to fellow MM Troy "Industrial Belly Button" Windsor and Whitney for providing a place! Signed up at the expo. Signs stated the half-marathon sold out! (Good thing it wasn't the full after 400 miles drive from So. Cal!) Well organized inaugural. The fans were very glad that marathoners returned to the city after a 25 year absence. I took a lot of pictutes and was very sick/weak from mile 1 to the finish. If realized how bad I would feel once I started I wouldnt have gone up to Oakland. Nonetheless a memorable experience with the many multi-culture neighborhoods, Oakland Raider painted Silver and Black fans, distant views of the San Fransisco skyline just discernable in the haze beyond downtown Oakland.
Operation Jack Marathon 12/26/11 Manhatten Beach CA 5:27:43 Marathon         Ran miles 1-13 primarily with fellow MM Silver Rivas, who ran the half-marathon. Completed miles 13-22 with fellow MM Charles Sayles (VP of 50 States Marathon Club). Last four miles on my own. Great venue. Next to the ocean. Beautiful weather. Lots of Maniac friends running. Very nice medal. Orange, banana slices, licorice and pizza at the finish. All in all an awesome day for not having ran in 6 weeks. (Last quarter at school was intense.) Complete 2011 with at least one marathon per month.
Orange County 01/07/07 Newport Beach-Irvine CA 4:01:52 Marathon 16559 274/ 274 220/ 220 51/ 51 Unique mix of rural undeveloped LA basin farmland and freeway running. Ran evenly with the 3:40 pace group from miles 6-16, then faded over slightly hillier, hotter and windier second half. Start was 50 degrees, finish was 70. Writing for my Jr college paper-the Citrus College Clarion, I decided to write an editorial on Larry Alneau, a runner almost my exact age, who finished about a minute ahead of me and died.
Pacific Shoreline Marathon 02/04/07 Huntington Beach CA 4:00:03 Marathon 1155 298 244 47 Loved the Surf Music, Ocean Views, Oil Derricks, and Beer Garden. Great Run.
Palos Verdes Marathon 05/19/07 San Pedro CA 4:49:00 Marathon 148 214 165 29 Well kept secret considering it's in the LA basin. Great hometown feel, finish area is in a park. Awesome views of the pacific ocean the entire route. Some call is Southern California's Big Sur. (With fewer runners!)
Pasadena Marathon 02/21/10 Pasadena CA 4:55:00 Marathon 1581 632/ 1078 477/ 715 81/ 109 Honored to have the opportunity to run with fellow MM Silver Rivas in his 100th marathon/ultra. A much more scenic course than I anticipated. Naturally we ran by the Rosebowl. There were great views of the Arroyo Park Bridge complex, and the Angeles Forest Mountains as well as old-town Pasadena, City Hall and more.(It began and ended at Pasadena City College-I once used a quote from the College President for a newspaper article.) My step dad lived in Pasadena-Altadena for more than 30 years, so running there had sentimental significance. I took more photos along the route than I recall taking in any marathon.
Paul Piplani Memorial 11/01/09 Chino CA 5:41:26 Marathon   13 8   Consisted of 14 (1.8 mile) loops in the Ruben S. Ayala Park. Yes there were soccer games, football games and kids playing on playground equipment..all of whom were oblivious to the marathon. I dont know if it was the fact that I had ran another marathon the previous day; but it was really a struggle. Boring. The Bataan Death March. It got progressivly warmer; esp for us slow participants. The Race Director, a nice guy, handed out a flyer for some 13 or 14 other marathons in the park or nearby--I wouldnt want to do one more loop course in a park like that. At the finish we were to run two smaller loops. There were no course martials and I ran "larger" small loops than I should have adding probably about 1/2-3/4 mile but that wasn't important: I completed the run to honor the memory of a fallen marathoner.
PF Changs Rock N Roll Arizona 01/13/08 Phoenix-Tempe-Scottsdale AZ 4:45:00 Marathon 6159 3768 2359 399 Very drab, urban course. Logistically well organized. Flat and fast for the time oriented.
PMRI 12/08/97 Middletown DE 3:27:30 Marathon 167       Last in a long sereis of marathons all fall. Very cold-20s. (50 and DC #11)
Portland 10/04/99 Portland OR 4:28:39 Marathon 6908       "Prodigal son returns"; marked 15th anniversary since 1st marathon here
Portland 10/01/06 Portland OR 3:50:46 Marathon 274 1390 1028 164 Fastest "Portland" since first in '84, 5th Portland event; only marathon repeated 5 times.
Portland Marathon 09/23/84 Portland OR 3:08:55 Marathon   420 411 3 Missed three weeks immediately preceding due to cutting tendon on broken wine bottle while on family vacation at Lake Powell, AZ. I had ran 84 days consecutively "to prepare" (what a coincidence and 84 is my first marathon...I was foolishly trying to run at 11 PM "before clock struck mid night" on the day of my 84th consecutive run, which forced the lay off. As to the marathon itself. Back then it was all about "trying to break 3 hours." At age 16 or 17 I remember seeing an athlete in Runners World Magazine bursting through a "brick walled" finish line--bricks flying everywhere--and an overhead clock that read 2:59:59. I was going into the Marine Corps 3 weeks after the marathon, so I set a goal of preparing for it over the summer as a way to get conditioned for the distance and for training. I assumed if I could "run a marathon I could finish Marine Corps Basic." (Knowing I could finish the marathon did give me a mental edge: it inspired me to both set the accomplishment of completing the marathon as a goal, and to attempt to run below three hours.) -Ran with my then "best friend" for the early stages-(George Rickard)-he went on to finish his one and only marathon in 3:41.-I believe I was on track to go below 3 hours for most of the first half, before dropping off pace. I remember: Pepsi cups with water capped with plastic lids and straws to avoid spillage at the aid stations-innovative for the time. There were also orange slices. Don't recall any electrolytes, etc. I really struggled from miles 20 through the finish-but with about 200 meters to go I was sprinting at top end. The medals were mailed to us later due to a snafu with the Birmingham mint. I also received a third place male 19 and under plaque in the mail. A news reporter asked me about my experience at the finish line, but I never saw nor knew if the footage was used. My mom dad and then little kid brothers were there, as well as my now deceased maternal grandmother.
Portland Marathon 10/06/02 Portland OR 4:16:15 Marathon 8206 2450 1624 303 Still dont like the section through the industrial area
Portland Marathon 10/03/04 Portland OR 4:54:45 Marathon 7199 3488 2081 361 Marathon #50,and last prior to 1 year in Iraq
Red Rock Canyon 03/01/08 (north of) Las Vegas NV 4:58:56 Marathon 99 47 35 10 Beautiful course. The Red Rock Canyon name only does it partial justice. Also accompanied by cactus, juniper and yucca trees. Very hilly. Probably in my top 7 or 8 most challenging in terms of grades. Wore bib number "99" denoting that sequence of marathon. Calico series first ever "Calico Slam" finisher! (In fairness there were 3 Calico half-slam finishers, and three mega slam finishers)... Calico Marathon 4 of 5 (4 of 4 for me I can't run the 5th)
Redding Marathon (SWEAT) 01/17/10 Redding CA 4:49:05 Marathon 49 99 68 15 "Lucky # one hundred and "13". The night before the battery went dead in the car while camping when the kids messed with the lights. It was after 1030 PM and the park host was closed. It took a 45 min in a rainstorm to finally get help-or I wouldnt have been able to leave the camping area or run the next day. Drove from So. Cal almost 11 hours. Rainy and obscured views but beautiful course and very happy I ran. Dams, swinging span footbridges, sundial bridge, waterfalls, the beautiful green Sacramento River
Richmond Times Dispatch 10/19/97 Richmond VA 3:27:31 Marathon 518       The cobblestone street experince, pass civil war monuments. The first time I ever used a camera in a marathon..ran with a disposable and took pictures on route. (50 and DC State #7)
Ridge Runner 06/06/98 Cairo WV 3:24:30 Marathon   6     Rural back country roads through forest, rolling, finished down hill fun course (50 and DC #15)
Rock N Roll 06/04/06 San Diego CA 4:13:58 Marathon 23374 3917 2675 414 Arrived 15 min late, wasted energy zig zagging through the 15 min milers, then crashed at mile 12, still a fun marathon.15,000 runners
Rock N Roll 06/01/08 San Diego CA 5:27:41 Marathon   10747 6077 883 First post-house fire (which occured on May 17th). Now to start collecting a new 100 medals.. (This was Rock N Roll event (#3) which qualified me for the "triple crown" and later (with the San Jose half marathon) the Rock n Roll "Grand Slam" award...inronically a great start on (reconstituting) my medal collection. I had pre-entered event, but more importantly kept my streak of three SD RNR's in a row alive. Of note, due to the fire, I passed on (May's) Forest of Nisene Marks Marathon (CA)and the Bizz Johnson Trail (October) as well as what would have been my first 50K on the McKenzie River trail (Sept) (OR); the latter two due to obtaining new work.
Rock N Roll 10th Anniversary 06/03/07 San Diego CA 4:45:00 Marathon 9038 6972 4415 635 The course is ugly, but the classic rock is great. If you dont like big crowds, stay away. If they dont bother you its a fun race with a lot of nice amenities-ie coffee and bagels at the start, beer and Spenco sandles at the finish, along with the usual post marathon fare,
Rock the Forest 04/10/11 Lake Forest CA 4:38:30 Marathon   2/ 4 2/ 3 1/ 1 I entered this as a shot-gun blast. Not sure I could budget going to the Western Pacific next week end (500 miles North); with the cost of gas in So Cal heading for the ozone. It was about 4 miles round trip on one side of a bike path and a little over 1 mile on the other, (5 "loops") and an additional out and back mile plus to make the full marathon. I didn't expect to run so well-at least comparative to my last two 6:30 plus marathons. No camera, pictures, dog, and good weather was the difference, not training. There were only 4 full marathoners, but one wasnt an "official placer" due to his early start. I swichted positions with the girl who ended up third/last finisher. I had bad calf "locking" cramps which caused me to stop a few times on the last loop-but I somehow managed to work through them, a little brisk walking and using mind over matter. Interesting course through euclptis trees on the paved vehicle restricted footpath where other runners, walkers and bikers traversed under the two architectural wonder freeway overpasses.
Rocket City 12/11/10 Huntsville AL 5:00:05 Marathon 564 977/ 1148   123/ 135 An unremarkable, not particularly scenic urban course. Headphones/Ipod prohibited. Flat and fast for those seeking a Boston qualifier/faster time. Long sleeve tech shirt with a small logo on front and a lot of advertising on back. Tons of food at the finish, along with a finishers hat and "space" blanket. Pre and post race dinner options. Logistically very well organized. Close to everything-including the Space Center-well worth the visit. Only minor complaint: more port-johns along the course!! There were some places where ducking behind a tree was not an option-even if that was what I needed. Quite a few miles through housing developments. (50 and DC #41)
Rockin' the Beach Trail 05/08/11 Long Beach CA 4:17:00 Marathon   3/ 5     The course was out and back 4.37 miles about 6 times on mostly paved streets. The route was actually about a 3/4 mile circle around a park /lake and neighborhood, a mile along an inlet, crossing a bridge and heading toward the ocean, but turning around before it could be viewed. We never actually saw the "beach" during the event, nor did we run on a "trail" so I found the name intersting. As with other Alewine events several half marathoners were well in front of me, and I was actually leading the full marathon for about the first four loops. The runner in second place passed me but then faded and we were both overtaken by eventual winner Maniac Deo Jaravata.
Rockin' With Dad 06/19/11 Long Beach-Marina del Vista/ Colorado Lagoon CA 6:14:13 Marathon   7/ 7     I have been sick for three plus (closer to four weeks) and had not ran a step since the Bay to Breakers 12 Kilometer last month. This cough/hack sore throat etc would not go away. Just found out from the doc it's a viral infection. I seriously wanted a "June" marathon-last year my only summer event was July 31st. I e-mailed the race director and asked if he could accomadate a 6 plus hour racer. Turns out I had to struggle through mostly all alone because all of the other slow runners had taken early starts (I was 7th of 7 official starters, and about 2 hours slower than last month, same course). I passed a lot of phlem-yuck-but I think it was better than sitting around the house which I had done the prior month. Great weather-a marine layer-grey and over cast. Tons of people rowing, water skiing the inlet, fathers day picnics/barbeques vollyball and golf. We 25 runners spread out over 4 miles in the two events were beyond inconspicious in all of the local Father's Day festivitity..
Rocky Road Endurance Runs 02/26/11 Coto de Caza CA 6:39:39 Marathon 310       I had not ran a "step" in training or at all since the last marathon, and now the times are starting to reflect that..a long winter with snow storms is the excuse I am using..also ran the entire event with our dog susie lab-hound mix, that didn't want the official water stops-prefered the unofficial stops-streams and puddles from the prior nights rain storm on the entirely too muddy and moderatly rolling trail.
Royal Victoria 10/07/01 Victoria BC 3:52:04 Marathon 1097 954 711 45 Best pasta party I think I ever went to, well worth the higher price (Canadian Province #2)
Run the Beach (Charlie Alewine) 07/31/10 Huntington Beach CA 5:13:00 Marathon 0       A "shot-gun blast" decision to get a "July marathon" ~several loops down and back on a concrete/paved foot path. Liked going by dog beach with the huge St. Bernards and past the summer bicycle X games, many beach goers on bicicles built for two, towing carriages etc, all completly obvlivious to the extremely small marathon taking place. (Not having assigned bib numbers made it tough to distinguish us from those on a Sunday fun runners.)
Run The Gap 09/01/01 Pocatello ID 3:58:32 Marathon   59 52 13 Very friendly down home event highly reccomend (50 and DC #21)
Run With The Black Horse 08/11/91 Fulda "GAP" Germany   3:28:00 Marathon 2826 33/ 33   10/ 10 (Then) closest to a "DNF" suffered heat dhydration and cramps-still somewhat new to marathoning and precautions. Didn't "notice" I was thirsty until my 13 and realized trouble when a volunteer told me the next water stop was 2 miles away. I gradually faded, drifted back from 6th place to 33rd. A good samaritan walked and jogged and motivated me from 20 to 24 miles or I might have quit.
Running From An Angel 01/05/08 Lake Meade NV 5:16:30 Marathon 112 43 31 7 Very high winds, rolling course. Well organized and fun. (Calico series #3 of 5)
Running the Coto (Horse) Trail (Charlie Alewine) 07/24/11 Coto de Caza CA 6:00:12 Marathon         Considering the cost of gas and our recently extended family size, I opted to stay locally for a marathon this week end rather than commute to next weeks marquee July California marathon at San Francisco, (which I ran once in 2006). I am not recovered from all the missed time leading up to last month's end of the viral infection. I really earned my finish here-this easily ranks among the top 4 or 5 most difficult in terms of a first DNF (did not finish) mentality. I ran the first 7 miles or so with a fellow MM, Laura. Her husband was a volunteer at the only manned check (besides the turn around at 13.1). I had a serious mind set to "scale down/convert" to the half marathon at the turn around, but that would have defeated the purpose of running-and trying to complete a July marathon. The primary factor consideration was heat--though I checked weather.com afterward and supposedly it never got over 78 degrees F this day-to me it felt like 110. I kept dousing myself in water, drinking copious quantities of, and sitting under shade trees-anything to cool off. I would have preferred an early start, to avoid the heat -but I didn't know I would take this long today, and living nearly two hours away, I just couldnt bring myself to a 4am rise, the 5 am rise seemed more appealing. I converted to walking uphills and runing downhill and flat between 7-13, walking both uphills and flat from 13-20 and other than a few 25-100 meter jog segments, walked almost entirely from 20-finish. Summer marathons are brutal. No wonder I only ran one last year and it was right next to the ocean!
Running With The Devil 06/30/07 Lake Meade NV 7:30:00 Marathon 28 12 8 1 Certainly the closest I ever came to DNF. Temps from 106-116. Thanks to maniac Dennis for keeping me focused. Calico Series Grand Slam (1 of 5)
RVRRC 01/24/93 Piscataway NJ 2:52:05 Marathon 2 4/ 52     Personal Best, first 5 miles averaged 6:00, last 3 averaged 7:58, race now defunct; once served a double Boston qualifier (50 and DC State #4)
Salt Lake 07/24/02 Salt Lake City UT 3:56:39 Marathon   181 148 25 230 AM rise for 3 AM bus to start...the format has since changed (50 and DC #23)
San Francisco 07/30/06 San Francisco CA 6:01:00 Marathon 6919 3534 2478 388 Running over Golden Gate not to be missed, Great Course, well organized;had taken preceeding 45 days off with no running.
San Miguel-Buzz 02/16/08 Camp Roberts CA 4:57:06 Marathon 452 51 42 13 Scenic rolling green grass hills. Challenging. Rustic old World War II barracks. Starts and finishes on base. Quaint. Low profile but a growing race.
Santa Barbara International Marathon 12/06/09 Santa Barbara CA 4:59:28 Marathon 2314 1270 773 140 The marathon was considered an inaugural, although I recall reading about marathons being held in the city before. I was able to stay with my Uncle and Aunt who happened to live in town. walked and ran very slowly for the first 17 miles, then poured it on the last 9-arriving within 1 minute of the time I informed my uncle I would finish in-despite no GPS or watch. (Guess I have calibrated my body by now.) Lemon groves, rural bike paths, industry, and beautiful vistas of the Pacific at the finish-the course had it all. No regrets for running here-though I didnt care for getting up at 4 am to catch a bus to a start that was delayed until 7 am.
Santa Catalina 03/17/07 Two Harbors-Avalon CA 5:12:48 Marathon 835 474 337 53 A complete scenic tour from the begining-took 26 photos. Ranks in the top 5 toughest of all I have ran. Foggy most of the route but the sun broke out a couple times. Definitly the "hardest earned finishers shirt"
Santa Clarita 11/05/06 Santa Clarita CA 3:50:32 Marathon 86 74 61 16 Dry, boring course, beautiful shirt and medal. Well entertained relative to field size.
Santa Rosa Marathon 08/28/11 Santa Rosa CA 4:43:30 Marathon 195       This was day II of the only double marathon I plan this year. The drive was just under 500 miles from Newport Beach. Traffic getting out of the LA basin on I-405 was a bear and I lost a lot of time. I arrived in enough time to get a decent night sleep in the truck canopy. Found a great pub-restaraunt sports bar in downtown and had a micro-brew and gourmet burger. (A nodd to my friend Maniac Marathon Mitch.) Race day had excellent temps-must have been low 60s low fog/clouds for 3 hours. Beautiful course along foot/bike paths through rural housing, near vinyards, parks and one abandoned building. Saw many Maniacs. Very flat with hair pin 90 degrees turns over bridges, but amazingly configured so we didn't once enter traffic!! It was a bit disheartening to see the finish line for the half marathon and follow the u-turn arrows back on course for the full. A ghost town-many fewer runners in the full. Saw and talked to Ryan Hall who was spectating. (US 2:04 Marathon runner-fastest ever). Also Rich Benyo-editor of Marathon and Beyond Magazine. Half and full got the same medal-beautiful multi color spinner. Finish line post race food very feeble-one bagel and a water. (Other "sample" stuff). Very nice tech. shirt-but I would have preferred a more prominent race logo.
Sea of Gallilee 01/04/01 Tiberias, Israel   3:55:45 Marathon 218       Follwing the footsteps of historical/mythological Jesus. At the time, a dream race to be able to run, glad I did it..at the time it was a toss between running here or Egypt and I couldn't do both.. (Country #5)
Seattle 11/29/98 Seattle WA 4:14:48 Marathon 1731       Poured rain cotten T felt like sucking chest wound, cold and miserable last 6 miles (50 and DC #16)
Shamrock 03/21/98 Virginia Beach VA 3:12:42 Marathon 249       Indoor (stadium) finish was very original. Big expo. Brace for wind.
Shiprock 05/03/03 Shiprock NM 4:49:00 Marathon 94 59 43 12 Low Key, No Medal, awesome views of the Shiprock-desert (50 and DC #25-half way mark!)
Silicon Valley 10th Anniversary 11/05/07 San Jose CA 4:57:50 Marathon 352 490 379 84 Takes place on the same date as the Santa Clarita (CA) Marathon, which I did last year at this time..similar courses-paved bike paths, viaducts, etc. I liked this one better because it is a lot greener (less brown.) Still, I probably wont run it again.
Silver State 08/29/99 Carson City NV 4:06:30 Marathon 72       Very unique carson city coin medal encased in plastic, live music entertainment (50 and DC #17)
Silver State 08/20/06 Carson City NV 5:20:00 Marathon 117 93 76 30 Started late-again. Ran extra. Third in 9 days. Out of shape/
Skyline to the Sea (Trail) 04/18/10 Rewoods Basin State Park CA 5:50:25 Marathon 378 31/ 54 19/ 27 9/ 9 Ranks among the most beautiful courses I have ever ran. Giant 2,000 year old redwoods on trail, sweeping vista's of the surrounding forest, waterfalls, streams, totally pristine and protected-only crossed paved roads about 3 times in the point to point course that ended at the ocean. Had to climb over granite rock face in a few areas and climb fallen trees.Only 3 aid stations, but they had more goodies than any aid station than I can recall. (There was an adjoining 50 KM). Nice technical finishers shirt, but no other finishers award.
Stinson Beach (Trail ) 11/06/10 Stinson Beach CA 5:37:00 Marathon 4094 47/ 56 34/ 40 7/ 9 I have finally done an enviro sports "Bay Area" marathon! Now to go back and knock out a few others-ie Muir Woods Trail, Big Sur Trail, Napa Valley trail, etc. Extremely hilly and technical throughout-roots, logs, single track trail etc. Also very scenic and a beautiful experience. Got off course about 3/4 of a mile to a mile on one occasion due to listening to another runner whom I should not have. After clearing may cobwebs I realized the many runners ahead at that point had not passed there. (We were still a with the 25 KM field.) Sometime after 20 miles we were well spread out again and I got disoriented, missed a bright orange trail marker ribbon in my peripheral vision and started down an extremely steep descent that was almost only navigable on my rear-so I knew I had missed a turn. I was so frustrated at this point I thought it might be my first DNF, having no clue where true trail was. I finally found trail, thanks to a hiker. I honestly feel I ran 27.5-28 miles, though I dont have a garmin to verify. Many switch backs. We ran along ridge lines, ran past an abandoned rusty car hulk, climbed a ladder, saw streams, waterfalls and old growth forest All ended well when I got back in town and beautiful sweeping vistas of the ocean. A mostly very personal experience-opposite of the next day at Two cities. Titanium knee Dave, race director personally handed out medals at the finish-a nice touch since I didn't think we would get them. The finish also included a "free beer" at the local Sand Dollar restaurant.
Tahoe Triple Day 1 09/27/07 South Lake Tahoe NV 5:15:19 Marathon 628 54 48 8 This was the worst day for unprotected traffic. A couple of times I just stopped completly with my back to the traffic and prayed the semi trucks wouldn't crush me into the guard rail and turn me into a gooey blender drink. day two ended with about a 4 miles of steep uphill, much of which I "fartleked" between pre-determined benchmarks.
Tahoe Triple Day 2 09/28/07 Spooner Point Lake Tahoe CA 5:36:57 Marathon 628 60 42 9 Cool and windy all day. Never removed my maniac jacket. The quarter size blister from yesterday had changed to 50 cent size. Nothing more new skin wont cure.
Texas Marathon 01/01/03 Kingwood TX 4:49:17 Marathon 570 39 23   Check the block for Texas, will run a bigger Texas Marathon later (50 and DC #24)
The Marathon Show Marathon II 08/27/11 Newport Beach CA 5:32:00 Marathon         I entered this as kind of a shot-gun blast double when I noted it on our Maniac calender (I found out at the following days marathon in Santa Rosa my Maniac buddy Silver Rivas was the guy who added it.) I had never done a reverse marathon. We started according to the projected amount of time we would take. Calculating about a 6 hour marathon, I started about 4:05 am, so finished a little under the 10 am window that was race finish target time. The course consisted of 8 1/2 slightly over 3 mile loops in residental neighborhoods passing the Conona Del Mar high school parking area. This is where we stocked our personal re-hydrants. After a while I was memorizing what cars were parked where on the loops. It was so early on a Saturday-most people were home. At about 8 am the roar of jet engines from the nearby John Wayne Orange Country airport could be heard. Following the fleight path of the planes kept my mind busy. I enjoyed running with (Henry) and other Maniacs with whom I passed time-including a racewalker who walked the pace I was running. About 8 of us started at the 4 am window. (The field was naturally Maniacs or soon to be's, and one active duty US Marine Corps Master Sgt who completed his 1st marathon and a husband wife team flew in from Houston that were running the Santa Rosa Marathon the following day, the same schedule I planned.) (*Unlike me they flew there.) The street lighting was good considering the early start, and I didnt need a headlamp. Temperatures were pleasant-low 70s-but sure felt warm as the sun peaked over the horizon, especially after about 9 am. At the finish in the park mid-way through the loop, one runners wife brought snacks, and Joe the Marathon Show host handed out power-aide. Another runner offered micro-brew beer. Who would guess the free marathon would offer more amenities than the one I paid $95 for the next day? There was no entry fee or shirt, and the medal which some of us ordered ($20) will arrive this week.
Tri-State 11/20/10 Mesquite NV 4:46:47 Marathon 159 150/ 227 13/ 16   Interesting point to point course with 5 or 6 miles in Utah, 13-14 in Arizona and the remainder in Mesquite, NV where it finished. Beautiful sweeping views of the desert expanse and predominantly downhill most of the course, with a few inclines, mostly flat the last 6. Probably more down hill than any course I can recall. Also the windiest course I have probably ever ran on-gusts over 50 mph to be sure.
Tybee Island 02/04/06 Tybee Island GA 4:07:59 Marathon 133 138 112 22 Well Organized, Great Medal, Highly reccomend (50 and DC #27)
US Air Force Marathon 09/15/07 Wright-Patterson AFB (Dayton) OH 4:19:37 Marathon 640 997 224 144 This was an especially significant event for me. I spent 20 years in the military and retired from the active duty Army. It is impecably organized. The course was more scenic and interesting than I was lead to believe based on reviews. The pasta dinner inside the airplane hanger which displays aircraft ranging from an original Wright brothers airplane to a B-2 Stealth is an experience not to be missed. My favorite landmark along the route was a brick front walk-in theater building displaying a marquee that read "welcome USAF marathon runners." 50 and DC (#30)
US Marine Corps 10/26/97 Washington DC 3:23:16 Marathon 521 1042 958 206 Haynes point very lonesome. Race start area was severe bottle neck One particpant "ran-over" the hood of a car! (50 and DC;#8 (Group Standard) (Repeat of VA. by 50 States Club Standard)
USMC "MWR" 04/04/98 Camp Lejune NC 3:13:33 Marathon       3 The "other" Marine Corps Marathon entirely on base of Camp Lejune, open training areas, windy (50 and DC #13)
Valentine Marathon 02/09/03 Olympia WA 4:28:44 Marathon   34 27   Nice long sleeve shirt a medal and a trophy!
Valentines Marathon 02/12/06 Millersylvania Park WA 4:09:41 Marathon 3516 26 19   RD does a great job but crossing terrain 4X is boring
Valley of Fire State Park 11/18/06 Overton NV 5:10:00 Marathon 28 86 53 12 Severe chest and sinus cold, almost didn't run. Maricle I finished, my wife and 2 year old daughter at the 20 mile mark pulled me thru.Maybe the toughest marathon I did considering the extremly challenging hilly course combined with being sick. Very scenic red rock canyon Utah-esque park-course.
Vancouver International 05/05/02 Vancouver BC 4:21:39 Marathon 4481 2241 1490 291 Big city marathon. Fun making friends in the crowd.
Wenatchee Marathon 04/23/06 Wenatchee WA 3:45:49 Marathon 54 35 32 4 Beautiful view of the Columbia River
Whidbey Island 04/02/06 Coupville WA 4:45:41 Marathon 139 196 138 21 Great Island view from bridge, hilly
Whiskey Row 05/06/00 Prescott AZ 5:04:13 Marathon 63 125 89 10 Slowest to date, preceeded by 1200 mile non-stop drive, rated 4th toughest in US (50 and DC #19)
Wild Wild West 05/03/08 Lone Pine CA 5:54:00 Marathon 219 26 21 11 The first seven miles is generally uphill. The next seven miles (7-14) is definitly downhill. (On a soft dirt road which I had to myself.) Miles 14-22 are generall uphill with some descents. Miles 22-24 are downhill and the last two are flat. By far the most scenic desert course I have ever run. Dotted with giant granite bolder debris fields, cactus (many in full purple flowered bloom), sagebrush, and other desert beauty. Many areas of single track trail where runners must proceed in single file. Great course support typical trail placement of 2-3 miles apart, awesome shirt. Unimpressive finishers award. Ranks with Big Sur and Humbolt Redwoods in terms of scenic beauty. I would reccomend it for pure enjoyment-I am amazed that last years winner ran 3:09 on this course. It's very technical.
Wyoming 05/26/02 Cheyenne WY 4:29:28 Marathon 31 21 20 6 Very scenic. Logistically, bare bones. Unimpresive medal. (50 and DC #22)
Yakima River Canyon 04/06/02 Ellensburg WA 4:25:19 Marathon 102 191 123 49 A marathon put on by a marathoner for marathoners-need I say more
Yakima River Canyon 04/01/06 Ellensburg-Selah WA 3:36:51 Marathon 75 58 47 9 Be infromed: two serious grades at miles 14 and 23
Yakima River Canyon Marathon 04/05/03 Ellensburg WA 4:21:58 Marathon 36 198 161 21 Good marathon for first timers
