Ran miles 1-13 primarily with fellow MM Silver Rivas, who ran the half-marathon. Completed miles 13-22 with fellow MM Charles Sayles (VP of 50 States Marathon Club). Last four miles on my own. Great venue. Next to the ocean. Beautiful weather. Lots of Maniac friends running. Very nice medal. Orange, banana slices, licorice and pizza at the finish. All in all an awesome day for not having ran in 6 weeks. (Last quarter at school was intense.) Complete 2011 with at least one marathon per month. |

This was a polar opposite experience as compared to Chicago, logisitical nightmare. Rented car and shared a room with fellow MM George Southgate. Employed/practiced my PR "training" by arranging a pasta dinner at the Olive Garden. (Ten Maniacs attended including Leslie Toops, who completed her 50th state!) Great scenic fall course-leaves turning beautiful gold and brown. Along river. Mix of urban rural. Wide World of Sports theme song with 2 miles 2 go-totally awesome. Nice medal. rock hard bagels. Great hot soup and crackers. Veterans monument in the city worth the extra day downtown. Excellent post race barbeque at Texas Roadhouse with friend and MM Bill McCarty.

Drove up Friday from Southern California, arriving late afternoon. Stayed with friends in Napa-perfectly located a mere half hour from the (very late) 9 am marathon start time Saturday. The course consisted of three six mile loops and two four mile out and backs. Extremely hilly, rugged, rocky and included stream and tree cross- overs. By the last 6 mile loop, I was reduced to walking the steep inclines: concern mounted that the 6 hour cut off might become an issue. About 4 1/2 miles into the first loop a group of us were attacked and stung by yellow jackets. I was stung twice. Later, at the 6 mile aid check, I went to adjust my camel back and swap my long sleeve shirt, when an aid station voluneteer discovered two bees in the clothing. Thus two additional stings for a total of 4.(Eventually enough runners reported stings that by the third loop a sign pointed us to an alternate (paralell) route for the remaining 1.5 miles. Cotton shirt. The image a "bunch of grapes" and a green ribbon draped (generic) enviro sports marathon finisher medal. (The shirt is nicer than the cow skull Death Valley Cotton and the ugly orange and grey seagull Stinson Beach (cotton) tee.The marathon was contained within Napa Bothe state park-a remarkable picturesque locale (Events also included a 10 K and half marathon.) The two mile point turn around of the 4 mile out and back was at the "Grist Mill" a very rustic 1880s mill and operational water wheel. The grounds now serve as a museum. This is the 4th Enviro sport event I have completed including Death Valley Trail and Roads, and Stinson Beach. The only Enviro marathon courses left to complete (that aren't same venues) are Golden Gate Headlands and Big Sur Trail. |

The host San Jose Garden Airport Hotel (host) was an awesome location to take the family: a giant pool and a nice hot-tub and only 4 miles from the race start location. The expo was very small and basic. I got a 10% off coupon for the "Sports Basement" - investigating it was a good choice -one of the biggest multi-sporting athletic equipment stores I have ever been in. The race shirt is excellent, blue and yellow, technical: nice logo on the front and back, and zero outside advertising. (I did feel a little pressure-it was issued at packet pick up yet the back states "finisher.") The course, (a gap-filler for the now defunct Silicone Valley which took place on the nearby Los Gatos Trail)--was also on foot paths past estuaries and parks (and not particularly scenic)-but it kept us off streets and was well marked. (Although the distinction at the half turn around wa simply a volunteer shouting half and full turn commands, I noted two women half marathon participants coming toward me that had apparently overshot the turn around--)
Interesting configuration.
Half marathoners turned at the 6.55 on the out and back, while full marathoners did a variation of a half marathon out, though about 3 miles on the "back" section was non-repeated section. I appreciated that both the t-shirt and medal awarded were different for the half and full. The medal is one of my only California marathon finisher awards that displays the geographic outline of the state. The finish line amenities included a tall ice cold 24 once hand towl wrapped bottle of ice water, a bottle of wine and all you could eat giant stuffed burritos. For me, I didn't run as evenly as I had hoped and got very hot especially the last 8 miles. The only negative aspect to this race were several sections that couldnt be accessed to place aid stations-thus 3 miles apart. Including a victim at 22, 24 and the finish line, I noted three presumed hot weather casualties with EMS on strechers. It was in the low 80s by noon. |

This was day II of the only double marathon I plan this year. The drive was just under 500 miles from Newport Beach. Traffic getting out of the LA basin on I-405 was a bear and I lost a lot of time. I arrived in enough time to get a decent night sleep in the truck canopy. Found a great pub-restaraunt sports bar in downtown and had a micro-brew and gourmet burger. (A nodd to my friend Maniac Marathon Mitch.) Race day had excellent temps-must have been low 60s low fog/clouds for 3 hours. Beautiful course along foot/bike paths through rural housing, near vinyards, parks and one abandoned building. Saw many Maniacs. Very flat with hair pin 90 degrees turns over bridges, but amazingly configured so we didn't once enter traffic!! It was a bit disheartening to see the finish line for the half marathon and follow the u-turn arrows back on course for the full. A ghost town-many fewer runners in the full. Saw and talked to Ryan Hall who was spectating. (US 2:04 Marathon runner-fastest ever). Also Rich Benyo-editor of Marathon and Beyond Magazine. Half and full got the same medal-beautiful multi color spinner. Finish line post race food very feeble-one bagel and a water. (Other "sample" stuff). Very nice tech. shirt-but I would have preferred a more prominent race logo. |

I entered this as kind of a shot-gun blast double when I noted it on our Maniac calender (I found out at the following days marathon in Santa Rosa my Maniac buddy Silver Rivas was the guy who added it.) I had never done a reverse marathon. We started according to the projected amount of time we would take. Calculating about a 6 hour marathon, I started about 4:05 am, so finished a little under the 10 am window that was race finish target time. The course consisted of 8 1/2 slightly over 3 mile loops in residental neighborhoods passing the Conona Del Mar high school parking area. This is where we stocked our personal re-hydrants. After a while I was memorizing what cars were parked where on the loops. It was so early on a Saturday-most people were home. At about 8 am the roar of jet engines from the nearby John Wayne Orange Country airport could be heard. Following the fleight path of the planes kept my mind busy. I enjoyed running with (Henry) and other Maniacs with whom I passed time-including a racewalker who walked the pace I was running. About 8 of us started at the 4 am window. (The field was naturally Maniacs or soon to be's, and one active duty US Marine Corps Master Sgt who completed his 1st marathon and a husband wife team flew in from Houston that were running the Santa Rosa Marathon the following day, the same schedule I planned.) (*Unlike me they flew there.) The street lighting was good considering the early start, and I didnt need a headlamp. Temperatures were pleasant-low 70s-but sure felt warm as the sun peaked over the horizon, especially after about 9 am. At the finish in the park mid-way through the loop, one runners wife brought snacks, and Joe the Marathon Show host handed out power-aide. Another runner offered micro-brew beer. Who would guess the free marathon would offer more amenities than the one I paid $95 for the next day?
There was no entry fee or shirt, and the medal which some of us ordered ($20) will arrive this week. |

Considering the cost of gas and our recently extended family size, I opted to stay locally for a marathon this week end rather than commute to next weeks marquee July California marathon at San Francisco, (which I ran once in 2006). I am not recovered from all the missed time leading up to last month's end of the viral infection. I really earned my finish here-this easily ranks among the top 4 or 5 most difficult in terms of a first DNF (did not finish) mentality. I ran the first 7 miles or so with a fellow MM, Laura. Her husband was a volunteer at the only manned check (besides the turn around at 13.1). I had a serious mind set to "scale down/convert" to the half marathon at the turn around, but that would have defeated the purpose of running-and trying to complete a July marathon. The primary factor consideration was heat--though I checked weather.com afterward and supposedly it never got over 78 degrees F this day-to me it felt like 110. I kept dousing myself in water, drinking copious quantities of, and sitting under shade trees-anything to cool off. I would have preferred an early start, to avoid the heat -but I didn't know I would take this long today, and living nearly two hours away, I just couldnt bring myself to a 4am rise, the 5 am rise seemed more appealing. I converted to walking uphills and runing downhill and flat between 7-13, walking both uphills and flat from 13-20 and other than a few 25-100 meter jog segments, walked almost entirely from 20-finish. Summer marathons are brutal. No wonder I only ran one last year and it was right next to the ocean! |

I have been sick for three plus (closer to four weeks) and had not ran a step since the Bay to Breakers 12 Kilometer last month. This cough/hack sore throat etc would not go away. Just found out from the doc it's a viral infection. I seriously wanted a "June" marathon-last year my only summer event was July 31st. I e-mailed the race director and asked if he could accomadate a 6 plus hour racer. Turns out I had to struggle through mostly all alone because all of the other slow runners had taken early starts (I was 7th of 7 official starters, and about 2 hours slower than last month, same course). I passed a lot of phlem-yuck-but I think it was better than sitting around the house which I had done the prior month. Great weather-a marine layer-grey and over cast. Tons of people rowing, water skiing the inlet, fathers day picnics/barbeques vollyball and golf. We 25 runners spread out over 4 miles in the two events were beyond inconspicious in all of the local Father's Day festivitity.. |

The course was out and back 4.37 miles about 6 times on mostly paved streets. The route was actually about a 3/4 mile circle around a park /lake and neighborhood, a mile along an inlet, crossing a bridge and heading toward the ocean, but turning around before it could be viewed. We never actually saw the "beach" during the event, nor did we run on a "trail" so I found the name intersting. As with other Alewine events several half marathoners were well in front of me, and I was actually leading the full marathon for about the first four loops. The runner in second place passed me but then faded and we were both overtaken by eventual winner Maniac Deo Jaravata. |

This was a fun destination location to take my family camping. I have now done both Six River Running Club Marathons including the Humboldt Redwoods in Oct 07 (Same course, ran in opposite directions.) Had a blast. Made a friend Ace "Ewedog" Ewing, MM 4130, in his 6th marathon in as many months whom I recruited into the Maniacs. We ran together from 13 through 20, got seperated and ran jointly from 23 to the finish. Nice dragonfly medal, shirt and patch (40th aniiversary event). Average course support, Boy Scouts handing out gatorade water and gel shots at 1 location. Very spartan finish line/post race recovery-cups of tap water and sliced bananas-if one could find any. Run this one for the destination: you'll be so enamored by the oldest trees in the world-up to 2000 years old-that's 25 generations---it makes running for 4 or 5 hours insignificant by comparison. |

Since there were 6-8 runners in the half and we didn't have bib #s I wasn't sure I was in the lead until I knew I was going to loose it anyway. This is a very technical course with rocks, roots, tight turns and steep climbs-5,000 feet of verticle gain. I was in the lead of the 3 of us marathoners-well behind the half marathoners on the first three four mile loops. By the fourth loop when it was just marathoners, I was quickly overtaken by second place, where I finished "in the middle" of the "3 person pack". Hey, sometimes its a battle of attrition-how many marathoners want to do a tough low key trail run on Easter Sunday? I ran through the first 4 loops but was forced to walk the hills on the last two, having not paced myself evenly nor trained properly for the hills. |

I entered this as a shot-gun blast. Not sure I could budget going to the Western Pacific next week end (500 miles North); with the cost of gas in So Cal heading for the ozone. It was about 4 miles round trip on one side of a bike path and a little over 1 mile on the other, (5 "loops") and an additional out and back mile plus to make the full marathon. I didn't expect to run so well-at least comparative to my last two 6:30 plus marathons. No camera, pictures, dog, and good weather was the difference, not training. There were only 4 full marathoners, but one wasnt an "official placer" due to his early start. I swichted positions with the girl who ended up third/last finisher. I had bad calf "locking" cramps which caused me to stop a few times on the last loop-but I somehow managed to work through them, a little brisk walking and using mind over matter. Interesting course through euclptis trees on the paved vehicle restricted footpath where other runners, walkers and bikers traversed under the two architectural wonder freeway overpasses. |

Despite the conditions (explained later), this is close to the single-most fun I ever had at a marathon event. The first in which I have finished beyond the stated official race cut-off time.
I got a special military veteran wrist band and corral A letter. I haven't been in a lead corral in a major marathon in 15 years. While there, I met and talked to actor Edward James Olmos and got a picture of LA Mayor Villaragosa. At the staging area in Dodger Stadium, the veteran wrist band allowed me onto the third floor club house area and private restrooms, which was a blessing considering the longer lines below. Took pictures of the hall-of fame(ers) displayed and watched elites warm-up. No time for the USO veteran bagel coffee lounge unfortunately: needed to rush back downstairs for our group Maniac photo and onto Corral "A" which closed at 7am.
The 15 minute delayed start put the kabash on the live KTLA interview I was supposed to be the subject of. When I called the reporter at mile 13, she stated that the delayed start placed them behind me and they would scrap it (despite a lot of coordination and e-mail, oh well!)
The first 13 or 14 miles I was pretty wired because of the potential interview. At the mile 15 I saw a downed mile marker due to high winds.
The rain was incessant, miserable, brutal, driving. A couple times I just stared down at the pavement and let the rain run off my hat bill instead of looking ahead. At 17, calf cramps almost did me in. Bananas and muscle spray saved the day. Took a lot of pictures. Got severely delayed at the porta-johns- runners had taken to using them for shelters. Fans, absoultely amazing. Free hot coffee. Entertainers braved the elements. Who says LA isn't a friendly city? At the end it was a death march to the family reunion area for bags:unsecured, with personal effects strewn all over truck floors.A good Samaritan runner and wife gave me a ride back to my car from there. |

Long sleeve tech shirt with a small logo on front and a lot of advertising on back. Tons of food at the finish, along with a finishers hat and "space" blanket. Pre and post race dinner options. Logistically very well organized. Close to everything-including the Space Center-well worth the visit. Only minor complaint: more port-johns along the course!! There were some places where ducking behind a tree was not an option-even if that was what I needed. Quite a few miles through housing developments.

Beautiful sweeping views of the desert expanse and predominantly downhill most of the course, with a few inclines, mostly flat the last 6. Probably more down hill than any course I can recall. The marathon set a "standard" and then failed to enforce it. The website maintained "you are require to attend the expo." and no day of race packet pick up was allowed. I identified an entrant just ahead of me in line that picked up packets for 3 other half (or) marathon runners. And I am guessing (she) was local. In my case I needed to make two 238 mile round trips instead of one because of the message on the website. To top it off, it wasn't an expo per sai- There were only a few pop up tents and vendors-and a race shirt available to purchase for $25. As to the course-suprisingly rural farm-land in the first 13 miles and sections of strong tail wind. Hilly toward the end, and must have been approaching 80 degrees. Nice finishers towel and medal. Beautiful sweeping views of the ocean and shoreline. Fun to run once. Next year I will probably run Catalina Eco, historically the day before. |

"One century" and a "marathon" of marathons. Coincidentally ran a 4: "45" to celebrate my "45th" birthday~4 and a half decades and glad to still marathon regardless of how "slow" I do it. This marathon was ugly and urban-a few leaves changing color-but nothing exciting topographically compared to the day before. They sure made up for it in organization-more amenities than almost any marathon I can recall-a long sleeve tech shirt, hat, finishers sweater, breakfast and an ice cream sundae for desert concluding with a beer garden. Supportive and friendly fans on course, and many great Maniac buddies to pass the time and run with including friends and fellow MM's James and David.

I have finally done an enviro sports "Bay Area" marathon! Now to go back and knock out a few others-ie Muir Woods Trail, Big Sur Trail, Napa Valley trail, etc. Extremely hilly and technical throughout-roots, logs, single track trail etc. Also very scenic and a beautiful experience. Got off course about 3/4 of a mile to a mile on one occasion due to listening to another runner whom I should not have. After clearing may cobwebs I realized the many runners ahead at that point had not passed there. (We were still a with the 25 KM field.) Sometime after 20 miles we were well spread out again and I got disoriented, missed a bright orange trail marker ribbon in my peripheral vision and started down an extremely steep descent that was almost only navigable on my rear-so I knew I had missed a turn. I was so frustrated at this point I thought it might be my first DNF, having no clue where true trail was. I finally found trail, thanks to a hiker. I honestly feel I ran 27.5-28 miles, though I dont have a garmin to verify. Many switch backs. We ran along ridge lines, ran past an abandoned rusty car hulk, climbed a ladder, saw streams, waterfalls and old growth forest All ended well when I got back in town and beautiful sweeping vistas of the ocean. A mostly very personal experience-opposite of the next day at Two cities. Titanium knee Dave, race director personally handed out medals at the finish-a nice touch since I didn't think we would get them. The finish also included a "free beer" at the local Sand Dollar restaurant. |

A "shot-gun blast" decision to get a "July marathon" ~several loops down and back on a concrete/paved foot path. Liked going by dog beach with the huge St. Bernards and past the summer bicycle X games, many beach goers on bicicles built for two, towing carriages etc, all completly obvlivious to the extremely small marathon taking place. I paced a first time marathoner whom I didn't realize was keeping such a "short stride" until I saw the half split of 2:56:50 -(of which I have ran about 5 marathons as fast or faster)-which wasn't as disconcerting as the fact that I would be just under the 6:00 cut off by a hair-and that much beyond my extended hotel checkout time of 1 PM. So I picked up the pace. The course was a mix of rural and urban-urban at the start and finish in greater Providence-the rest in rural scenic suburbs along bays, inlets, and next to lakes and golf courses. The field was very spread out. There was no energy replacement fluid between miles 5 and 21-just water. Not sure if it was just for 5:30 runners and if earlier runners received electrolytes or not. Lesson learned. Run faster or carry a camel back.

This is the 3rd directly affiliated USMC marathon I have completed including "the" Marine Corps Marathon Washington DC, and the USMC Morale Welfare and Recreation Marathon at Camp Lejune NC. The Marines, as usual, did an excellent job. Oversize t-pee mile markers with motivational slogans every mile-along with bananas, oranges, water, pretzels and so-on. (It was like having the 20 mile mark of the average marathon at every single mile.) The race "swag" included a tote bag, very nice medal with USMC emblem, hat, lip balm, a coin and more. Rolling paved hills -the "hard corps" implied pavement running, not particularly challenging. The Marines along the route were very motivational. The red short sleeve tech shirt is one I will be proud to wear. It seems like a strict 6:00 cut off was enforced. There were about 300 participants -well under the 4,000 announced cap. This well hidden gem stays under the radar-not even listed on marathon guide, I almost missed it. Not particularly scenic-takes place within the confines of the base. The MC at the 20 mile "do-loop" one turn was very inspired, as were the volunteers at the 4 mile mark, and generally all along the course. |

I have now completed all 5 Calico Series Marathons in NV (starting with 2007 Run W/the Devil). I had promised the RD Joyce in 2008 that I would return to NV for this event (since that year it coincided with my 100th in Nashville TN)-thus I finally made good on my promise. It was a draw between this marathon and Muir Woods Trail, same date, which I hope to run some day. Lovell Canyon is an extremely hilly course. It was also very windy - likely commmon for this time of year in the desert canyon. It never quite warmed up enough to remove my long sleeve tech shirt. I was still coming off a cold with a lot of congestion-only the degongestant capsules got me through. There were many ultra marathoners in the mixed race field and for once the "marathoners" rather than the 10KM, relay and 1/2 marathoners were the minority field. The ultra runners were amazing-folks running twice (50 miler) or 4 times (100 miler) as far as me were already 10 miles ahead of me when I finished the marathon!! The course is very scenic-desert tundra and layers of geologic history on the canyon walls. Reminiscent of the Yakma River Canyon Marathon in WA (without the river). Perspective marathoners would do well to consider this event. There is so much scenic desert beauty less than 20 miles from Las Vegas and much of it can be observed in the Calico Racing events. |

Thanks kindly to fellow MM Troy "Industrial Belly Button" Windsor and Whitney for providing a place! Signed up at the expo. Signs stated the half-marathon sold out! (Good thing it wasn't the full after 400 miles drive from So. Cal!) Well organized inaugural. The fans were very glad that marathoners returned to the city after a 25 year absence. I took a lot of pictutes and was very sick/weak from mile 1 to the finish. If realized how bad I would feel once I started I wouldnt have gone up to Oakland. Nonetheless a memorable experience with the many multi-culture neighborhoods, Oakland Raider painted Silver and Black fans, distant views of the San Fransisco skyline just discernable in the haze beyond downtown Oakland. |

Despite the major snafoos with the traffic, I enjoyed the marathon. (I was on a bus that got caught in traffic because the RDs made the mistake of allowing family and friends to drop off at Dodger Stadium which inveriably caused herculean delays and forestalled the start.) It was a neat change to run through Beverly Hills, where we were serenaded with classic violin. Also memorable were the colorfully outfitted Mexican girls and boys who danced to La Cucaracha being played by the Mexican stringed and brass insturment band, all of the interesting costumed runner ("ped ex. who ran as a mini ped ex van), the bunny (how do you run in a fur costume in 60 degree weather?), the light bulb guy-who had bulbs protruding from everywhere and Lucky Strike (who ran as a bowling pin but appeared to have given up already by two miles).. The finish at Santa Monica was fun though it was too grey and hazy to see much of the shoreline.) |

Well organized event. Touted as "worlds largest finishers medal" at nearly 1 1/2 pounds. Interesting and varied course with pleanty of fans in intermitant pockets. A variety of musical entertainment, unique architecture (greek columned churches), the Clinton library, the Capital Building, Arkansas River-great mix of rural and urban scenery was viewed from paved roads. Excellent cost share host (Peabody) hotel with fellow Maniac Morgan and 50 stater Bob where the expo was held and the 50 state club reunion was. Somehow missed the "Duggars" from 19 Kids and counting who were supposedly on course, and the worlds largest pedestrian bridge. (Ironically the other day I saw an episode with all their kids crossing it.)

Honored to have the opportunity to run with fellow MM Silver Rivas in his 100th marathon/ultra. A much more scenic course than I anticipated. Naturally we ran by the Rosebowl. There were great views of the Arroyo Park Bridge complex, and the Angeles Forest Mountains as well as old-town Pasadena, City Hall and more.(It began and ended at Pasadena City College-I once used a quote from the College President for a newspaper article.) My step dad lived in Pasadena-Altadena for more than 30 years, so running there had sentimental significance. I took more photos along the route than I recall taking in any marathon. |

One of three marathons that I recall ariving late to. In this case I misestimated the travel time in a horrific storm, combined with a couple other snafoo's. Also ranks in the top four for torrential down pours (Frankfurt Germany 1990, Seattle WA 1998 and ST Louis MO 2009). The primary difference is that this was on an unimroved dirt road. Basically a pig pen all the way around the lake with lake effect wind and rain. At mile 17 a volunteer told me "they are calling it" and my mind raced.."my first DNF"..(but wait, that means I quit which wouldnt apply here-the race was quitting on me)..in any case the race wasn't called though the aid stations from miles 17 on were un-manned. There were pockets of sun, and miles 22 on were clear. It is a scenic course, and I enjoyed it despite the conditions. |

"Lucky # one hundred and "13". The night before the battery went dead in the car while camping when the kids messed with the lights. It was after 1030 PM and the park host was closed. It took a 45 min in a rainstorm to finally get help-or I wouldnt have been able to leave the camping area or run the next day. Drove from So. Cal almost 11 hours. Rainy and obscured views but beautiful course and very happy I ran. Dams, swinging span footbridges, sundial bridge, waterfalls, the beautiful green Sacramento River |

The marathon was considered an inaugural, although I recall reading about marathons being held in the city before. I was able to stay with my Uncle and Aunt who happened to live in town. walked and ran very slowly for the first 17 miles, then poured it on the last 9-arriving within 1 minute of the time I informed my uncle I would finish in-despite no GPS or watch. (Guess I have calibrated my body by now.) Lemon groves, rural bike paths, industry, and beautiful vistas of the Pacific at the finish-the course had it all. No regrets for running here-though I didnt care for getting up at 4 am to catch a bus to a start that was delayed until 7 am. |

Consisted of 14 (1.8 mile) loops in the Ruben S. Ayala Park. Yes there were soccer games, football games and kids playing on playground equipment..all of whom were oblivious to the marathon. I dont know if it was the fact that I had ran another marathon the previous day; but it was really a struggle. Boring. The Bataan Death March. It got progressivly warmer; esp for us slow participants. The Race Director, a nice guy, handed out a flyer for some 13 or 14 other marathons in the park or nearby--I wouldnt want to do one more loop course in a park like that.
At the finish we were to run two smaller loops. There were no course martials and I ran "larger" small loops than I should have adding probably about 1/2-3/4 mile but that wasn't important: I completed the run to honor the memory of a fallen marathoner. |

An extremely hilly paved course. Very green. It rained hard and parts were quite windy. The first "flush" porta-johns I have ever used. A lot of pre marathon breakfast food-coffee, bagels, fruits and pasteurized orange juice. (Too bad I had already eaten cereal and was full.) Traditional Hawaiian garbed grass skirted torch runner kicked off the start. Other Hawaiian dancers entertained throughout. Very happy considering I hadn't ran in months. A somewhat small expo. Race shirt has a ton of advertising on back and a super small logo on front. Fruit, yogurt and beer at the finish.

(This was Rock N Roll event (#3) which qualified me for the "triple crown" and later (with the San Jose half marathon) the Rock n Roll "Grand Slam" award...inronically a great start on (reconstituting) my medal collection.
I had pre-entered event, but more importantly kept my streak of three SD RNR's in a row alive. Of note, due to the fire, I passed on (May's) Forest of Nisene Marks Marathon (CA)and the Bizz Johnson Trail (October) as well as what would have been my first 50K on the McKenzie River trail (Sept) (OR); the latter two due to obtaining new work.

The first seven miles is generally uphill. The next seven miles (7-14) is definitly downhill. (On a soft dirt road which I had to myself.) Miles 14-22 are generall uphill with some descents. Miles 22-24 are downhill and the last two are flat. By far the most scenic desert course I have ever run. Dotted with giant granite bolder debris fields, cactus (many in full purple flowered bloom), sagebrush, and other desert beauty. Many areas of single track trail where runners must proceed in single file. Great course support typical trail placement of 2-3 miles apart, awesome shirt. Unimpressive finishers award. Ranks with Big Sur and Humbolt Redwoods in terms of scenic beauty. I would reccomend it for pure enjoyment-I am amazed that last years winner ran 3:09 on this course. It's very technical. |

Actually had seven weeks to train for the marathon considering the planned 100th as the date fell in sequence. Training went well. Number permitted me front line position. Went by the digital clocks. First mile read 8:30 and I got off pace, failing to account for the 1 min. early start for elites. Went faster than planned in the early miles averaging 8:00 through 15 miles before imploding to 12:00 miles. One would think after 99 marathons I would know how to run an even pace. A bad calf cramp (charlie horse) at 20 miles actually forced me on the ground for about 4 min. while I worked with a course medic to message it out. The course itself was moderatly rolling throughout-not what I expected. Far and above the most scenic of all the Rock N Roll events. Saturated with awesome music and fans. A mix of somewhat rural and urban.
In my view the best of the three R N R full marathons held until now.

This is enjoyable run next to the giant trees which provide shade and make it easy to forget one is running a marathon. Six miles of the out and back course that are ran in the "open" with no tree cover. I found this a bit surprising. The course was more scenic and interesting than I was lead to believe based on reviews. Started with a full moon. After the moon went down (or the earth turned sufficiently, however you want to look at it)..one could see the millions of stars better. (OK you cant see "1 million" with the naked eye, but it seemed like it). By the time I finished it was "dusk", the sky was light orange and the stars couldnt be discenred. A very fun and unique experience. Reccomend for someone who doesnt want to run an ultra to experience night running. Runners carried glow nacklaces flashlights and head lamps; but the full moon was bright enough that the light(s) werent necessary other than to locate the bright green taped markers every mile. Keep in mind the aid stations are 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 miles apart.

However, marathon participants climb another mountain (from 10,000 to 11,400 feet, twice.) As challenging at it was scenic. Included passing an a ghist town. If you run here be prepared for both weather extremes. Unique mix of rural undeveloped LA basin farmland and freeway running. Ran evenly with the 3:40 pace group from miles 6-16, then faded over slightly hillier, hotter and windier second half. Start was 50 degrees, finish was 70. Writing for my Jr college paper-the Citrus College Clarion, I decided to write an editorial on Larry Alneau, a runner almost my exact age, who finished about a minute ahead of me and died. |

Felt great from miles 1 through 5, lousy from miles 5 through 10, great from 15-20, and struggled the last 10 KM's. My good retired Army Natl. Guard friend (Jon Braasch's) home town marathon. We both ran while I was visiting on leave from the Army. The overall time was a reflection of the fitness level attained while running with the Jersey Shore Running Club. (50 and DC State #5) |

Didn't "notice" I was thirsty until my 13 and realized trouble when a volunteer told me the next water stop was 2 miles away. I gradually faded, drifted back from 6th place to 33rd. Last Berlin Marathon when country still divided. I recall running way too hard through the first 25 KM; pacing with and talking to a French runner. Kilometers 25-39 were tough as my per KM split slowed by 40 second-1 minute each, and I walked the majority of the final three. (I had tried to run a 2:40 pace.) I remember being shocked that I still broke 3:00 with the walking. |

Ran with two German friends with old school pace charts (a piece of paper with splits taped to watch) -all met goal to break 3 hr mark. The friends had ran 2:40 (!!) in Hamburg the previous year...a feat I thought I could equal one day after I went sub 3:00, but never did nor will. |

Missed three weeks immediately preceding due to cutting tendon on broken wine bottle while on family vacation at Lake Powell, AZ. I had ran 84 days consecutively "to prepare" (what a coincidence and 84 is my first marathon...I was foolishly trying to run at 11 PM "before clock struck mid night" on the day of my 84th consecutive run, which forced the lay off. As to the marathon itself. Back then it was all about "trying to break 3 hours." At age 16 or 17 I remember seeing an athlete in Runners World Magazine bursting through a "brick walled" finish line--bricks flying everywhere--and an overhead clock that read 2:59:59. I was going into the Marine Corps 3 weeks after the marathon, so I set a goal of preparing for it over the summer as a way to get conditioned for the distance and for training. I assumed if I could "run a marathon I could finish Marine Corps Basic." (Knowing I could finish the marathon did give me a mental edge: it inspired me to both set the accomplishment of completing the marathon as a goal, and to attempt to run below three hours.) -Ran with my then "best friend" for the early stages-(George Rickard)-he went on to finish his one and only marathon in 3:41.-I believe I was on track to go below 3 hours for most of the first half, before dropping off pace. I remember: Pepsi cups with water capped with plastic lids and straws to avoid spillage at the aid stations-innovative for the time. There were also orange slices. Don't recall any electrolytes, etc. I really struggled from miles 20 through the finish-but with about 200 meters to go I was sprinting at top end. The medals were mailed to us later due to a snafu with the Birmingham mint. I also received a third place male 19 and under plaque in the mail. A news reporter asked me about my experience at the finish line, but I never saw nor knew if the footage was used. My mom dad and then little kid brothers were there, as well as my now deceased maternal grandmother. |
